Did you inform your insurance company?

I haven't as yet.  No-one else drives my car and I won't be driving until I get the go ahead so as far as I can see it's no different from me going away for 6 weeks and the car sitting on the drive.

Of course, if it's a legal requirement I will, but I've just scoured all the paperwork I was given by the hospital and it isn't mentioned anywhere.

Just wondering if I should ???

I guess it depends on your insurance company - I seem the recall that mine was only interested in events which I would have to regsiter with the DVLA. Things such as diabetes.

Hi Cels I did not know what to do either regarding car insurance so I

spoke with my insurer and they said when the consultant or doctor says

you are fit to drive that is OK by them.I was told that if you had an

accident and you have had the thr and you drove without getting

clearance ie. from consultant you would not be covered and my car was

covered as normal sitting in the drive for 6 weeks infact my car had sat

for nearly 6 months as i could not drive before the op it only got a wee

run now and again from my husband most people get the all clear at 6

    weeks

    Take care ☺

I checked with mine before the operation and they told me as long as the consultant gives the go ahead it's ok but I have to inform them before I do drive.

Yes, I notified my insurance and also my wife's insurance where I am a named driver. There wasn't any increase in price of the policy. The battery was flat on my car because I didn't use it for 8 weeks. Tony

Cels l asked my physio yesterday if l was ok to drive even though l was not at 6 weeks stage yet. She said as long as l felt l could and could do an emergancy stop there is no reason for me not. It was not a legal requirement its what your surgeon advised you and how well you felt yourself.

      Thanks Laura,

I didn't get any advice from anyone about driving.  I got a stack of booklets given me which I have been reading through.  The one from Arthritis Research UK about hip replacement just says "You can expect to drive again after about 6 weeks as long as you can safely cotrol the vehicle and do an emergency stop".  More or less what you have said.  I'll see how I feel.  At about 4 weeks, if I feel able, I might sit in my car on the drive and just see what it feels like pressing the pedals.  No intention of driving at this stage.  I probably turn the engine over and makwe sure the battery isn't flat.  I'm in no hurry really.  I have a bus stop right outside my home that stops right outside the hospital although I also have many willing friends.  I think it's just a milestone that it's wonderful to reach.

My surgeon said at my initial 6 week consultation that he would not give me the OK as I was still using a stick indoors and outside.  He explained that it wasn't the amount of force I could put on the pedal, but the speed of actually being able to move the foot onto the pedal.  In my case it was my left leg, so just the clutch, but he still wouldn't clear me.

In any case I had to have more surgery, and at 7 weeks after that he cleared me as I was going without sticks indoors at least, and just using hiking poles outside.

As a milestone, it is the major one.
