Diet for lichen planus

Sometimes it's hard to figure out what foods cause LP flare-ups. I'm beginning to think cheese is a problem. Any suggestions?

I've had Oral Lichen Planus since this September. As a newcomer, I'm not sure my findings benefit anyone at all, I share it though.

I also have problem with cheese, especially store bought ones.  I began making it at home using pasteurized milk+lemon juice. Most lemon juice is drained during the process and the remaining acid, although bothers, allows me to eat some cheese and intake calcium. I'm going to soak it in water for awhile and drain it several times to see if this lessens the acid.

Regarding bread, the ones containing baking powder worsen my lesions, but the ones made by baking yeast don't.

By the way, I'm on topical dexamethasone. Has anybody here used a large dose, like a shot of dexamethasone/prednisone for OLP? Can a large dose shock the immunity response of the body to regulate it?

A little late, but I am on a dexamethasone mouth rinse, stuff is yucky, they told me I couldn't get it without cherry or raspberry flavoring. My topical ointment is clobatisol but it's hard to put on so manhy tiny spots.. I have tried the ketalog shot ?spelling? Not really sure if it helped me. but my daughter has lichen sclerosis and it helped her. (she since went gluten free and all her lesions/scars cleared up)

I've been suffering with lichen planus for over 19 years now. It keeps reccuring every 2 years or so. like 2 or 4 lesions. But all of a sudden it came back with vengence last month. All over my legs, wrists, underams. I didn't know what I was doing wrong. After giving it a lot of thought, I realised that I have been consuming wine a lot. Every person who has LP knows that our immune system starts attacking our skin. I think since alcohol boosts immune system, i had an outbreak of LP. I stopped consuming wine and it has drastically reduced. I have promised myself to never ever consume alcohol. Please guys trust me. If you are consuming alcohol, stop it immediately. For the itching, i used to apply emuaid. Gives a lot of relief. Im planning on buying their soap as well. For the marks, I apply very small amount of steroid . I know steroid is not good, but i keep it only on the marks so that they fade away soon. When I was 9 year old, I got LP. Those marks have faded but if observed closely, they can still be seen.

Alcohol is high in histamine wine a specially. I would like everyone to search histamine intolerance and tell me what you think. My opinion is that LP suffers very well have this. It explains a lot of other illnesses that also coincide with LP like IBS and a lot of others that I see others post. Please check this out and leave feedback.

Yes, I quit wine about 5 months ago because I thought it was the sugars making my mouth even more painful.

It's not just cheese. I had a severe breakout of lichen planis for over a year. I had been miss diagnosed so many times I lost count. Once I researched common issues, this mystery disease is a severe reaction to an allergen that you are unaware of. Symptoms range from sleeplessness, joint pain, foot pain, thyroid symptoms, lower abdominal pain, etc. I visited a gastroenterologist as a last resort, my body covered in scars from the lichen planis. Desperate for a solution I realized that auto immune disorders start in the gut. Within one hour in my office visit with this specialist, he told me I know what's wrong, stop all dairy. He told me to go 30 days completely dairy free. That means ALL which there are over 50 different names for dairy. So I did, within 10 days of no dairy, the lichen planis began to clear. All pain went away. I lost 30 pounds, which he said was my body swelling from the allergen. I have been completely dairy free for a year now, feel great, no rash, no psoriasis either. Just and FYI, dairy is in damn near every pre made food, medicine, bread, most restaurant foods. It is a lifestyle change worth trying. Ironically I am a pizza shop manager, can't eat one thing at my workplace. Good Luck, I encourage you to try it.

Thank you for this post. I often wonder if I need to cutout all dairy as well. I started the AIP diet. I'm still struggling with being tired throughout the day, but my LPP hasn't flared up much since the change unless I'm majorly stressed out. What supplements are you taking?

I still haven't used any supplements since my diagnosis of the non dairy. The doctor told me my body was on total overload from everything I was trying. I basically started from scratch. Following the non dairy list I found on the internet, I eat basically healthy. With the exception of Oreo cookies which are non dairy. You can have So-Brand ice cream made with almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk. Pretty good. Lots of fruit, fresh veggies stir fried. Most Asian, Jewish, and Indian inspired food recipes don't use dairy. Eating out is much harder. Some restaurants are better than others. Once you ditch the dairy, sleep will be better, weight falls off, energy comes with time. Your body needs to heal from the inside out. NO Alcohol it will slow your progress and cause a flare. I'm sorry went off topic. When purchasing any medicines even supplements make sure they are dairy free. All pain medication has dairy except aspirin. I took a year for me to feel like I did when I was younger. I now get complements on how healthy I look. Really hang in there and give it a real shot. Good luck

      Hi Heather,

It took me about a year after being diagnosed to figure out milk was causing not only sore joints, LP but poor nutrition absorption because it was irritating a possible IBS issue that I may or may not have. I do believe I'm lactose intolerant I'll find out at next Doctors appointment.

As of 2 months ago I've cut out lactose from my diet and not only did my inflammatory issues stop but I'm absorbing nutrients once again and starting to see better results in my workouts. My scars from my L.P. are nearly gone and my consistent soreness in general has all stopped. I changed my protein blend to a isolate whey protein and what a difference it made. The isolate process refines the lactose out to near nothing. My diet now consist of whole grains, high protein, no carbs, little processed suger and lots of fruit and veggies. I've given myself a cheat day because let's face it... no one is perfect. Also, I've cut caffeine down until I find out if I have IBS because it seemed to irritate my digestive issues. I've put myself on a 8 hour fast to help promote my body to use stored fat as energy and I'm finally seeing definition in my muscle tone. Restricting my eating to a 8 hour window has done wonders for my bodys efficacy. Now this all didnt happen over night. I had to start fresh also. By cutting all supplements out, caffeine, milk, wheat, suger and milk for about a month. Then experimenting by introducing one at a time back into my diet. This is how I found that milk was messing with my tummy. Now that I know milk is the culprit of all my issues I check everything I eat and I've found if it's possessed it more then likely has a milk derivative in it.

As far as Supplement go I take a multi vitamin, probiotic, and a coconut tablet in the morning and a flaxseed oil tablets at night before bed. Fingers crossed this L.P. is over with. Good luck to everyone.

I'm happy you found that milk was the culprit for you. I am not so lucky. I started with this about a year ago, it came out of no where and blasted me. both on my skin and the in my mouth. I cried for a couple of weeks. For the life of me I cannot figure why this started. Five years ago, for other health reasons, I had to go completely Gluten free and dairy free (eating out is non existent, btw I never lost even a pound). I even read my meds for any lactose and gluten, I write companies to make sure because the sneaky companies use lactose as a taste thing, and wheat starch as a binder and they don't tell you. So, for me, gluten nor dairy can be even a remote factor.

I'm on Triamcinolone Acetonide dental paste which is like trying to rub dried out chapstick onto a open raw sore chemical burn, oh and even for someone whose mouth isn't sore try putting this paste on a wet cheek/tongue it's maddening.

plus I have this mouth rinse that has sucrose (sugar) which sugar in general seems to make my mouth more raw. so that does no good.

I'm at my wits end living on mashed potatoes, mushy carrots and gf oatmeal. Can't even chew up a pc of meat because it hurts if anything at all, touches my cheeks. and my tongue is so sore that it takes an eternity to finish a slice of bread (gf of course) because bread sticks to your teeth, and moving my tongue around that much really really hurts. so, include plant based protein shakes to go along with my mushy carrots and gf oatmeal.

Anyone got any other suggestions? please?  Seriously.. pretty pretty please?

Lichen planus onset after my son was born (36 hours in labor and emergency C-section).

A dermatologist finally diagnosed it and said 'You have the worst case that i have ever seen! Can I get a picture for my medical journal?" WOW, really?

I have lost all my nails, and hair, have lichen planus of the mouth and in my throat. Basically, anywhere that I have membrane, I have it.

    Solutions over the years.

    1) Toms natural toothpaste propolys and myhr and an all natural mouthwash, also let vitamin E or aloe gel soak in my mouth from time to time. Do a coconut oil pull about once a week.

    2) drink aloe vera juice with my tea

    3) stopped my period by taking no placebo with the birth control pills

    4) thanks to the help of my GI Dr., I now have the option of doing 'self throat dilations' when my esophagus gets constricted.

    5) low stress, so walk and swim and run to help with this plus boosts seratonin

    6) Met with a Dr who practiced with acupuncture and teas and am now drinking teas twice a day which has cleared up my mouth to where I can at least eat solid foods now.

    7) Have changed my diet to be alkaline and not acidic. Hard to do at first but then once the relief sets in, then it is worth it.

    8) Take Florajen 3 probiotics and Vitamin D.

    9) researched diet for herpes and that diet has helped immensely, for example, low argenin and high l lysine ratios in foods.

    10) Constantly researching different holistic and homeopathic methods since this is systemic and needs to heal on a cellular level. This type of healing takes longer than pills from doctors, but with patience, provides long term solutions and comfort.
