Diet for lichen planus

Sometimes it's hard to figure out what foods cause LP flare-ups. I'm beginning to think cheese is a problem. Any suggestions?

I was diagnosed Jan 2105 after 4 months and 3 doctors treating me for contact dermatities and eczemza. As soon as a had my daignosis while waiting the week for my bipsy results I stated a food journal; Had my triggers and stopped my itching in 2 days.Prednisone took care of the rest. But here is the interesting part. It was ONLY what I drank. Alchohol was the worst! I reacted to orange juice and diet coke and even mineral water. I only drink water and coffee. I have tested this theory and got in trouble twice having a couple glasses of red wine. Both time I stopped the sumptomes with just 2 days of prednisone.

I have LLP of the scalp but think I have also had a couple of blisters in my mouth that were probably oral without me knowing they were at the time - I also have pulsating tinitus in my right ear -  add to that frontal fibrosing alopecia which is most prevalent on the right side causing hair loss that probably will not come back as it is scarring.  There is no known cause and no treatment that works.  I have done tons of research and the most recent info is a failure to metabolize vitamin A - so weed out the foods that are the highest in A and really read labels as it is in alot of stuff even margarine - also all face creams with retinal and sunblock.  This all started about two years ago after a pneumonia shot and a shingles shot - both live viruses and a shot of prolia, an osteoporosis med, and which is known to cause dermitis and adversely affect your immune system in some patients.  Around this time I also went on the Dr. Oz diet which eliminates sugar, processed foods and dairy - and mostly water to drink - I like many other on here have not given up wine.  Stress does adversely seem to effect it as well.  I have not done any of the drugs as I feel too many drugs were my tipping point but who knows.  The Dr. Oz diet also has you do baking soda and epsom salt baths which continuously shows up as a help as well to the extent that I am going to start doing an am soak of my feet as well.  The diet was a happy accident in this journey as I believe many of the things that are eliminated on his diet and the soaking to rid the body of toxins really helped me.  I have also taken B complex, milk thistle and a vitamin for adrenal health with the hope that with reducing elevated cortisol levels from stress would help this condition as well.  During the the very beginning my blood pressure was also slightly elevated.  As of now I feel really good - much calmer - blood pressure is good - no more hair loss - and the scalp lichen is much better.  I am at present trying some essential oils - lavender and cedarwood - added to my shampoo and conditioner.  I also have been trying for the last couple of days to add lavender to a lotion that I am experimenting with on the front of my scalp which is the only place the lichen persists.  I really think there is a common thread in all of this and it totally seems bizarre that none of the medical community has been able to fix it.  These forums are essential to us and them as hopefully we all will be able to figure out what works.  I hope that some of the this information will be helpful to anyone who reads it.

Gengigel mouth wash helps my mouth heal so at least I don't have to cut out too many foods. I hadn't thought about cheese but anything acidic like fruits and tomatoes and high in sugar definitely makes it worse. You can buy the mouth wash from Boots or it's cheaper online.

I am so happy to have found this thread. I have been to 8 doctors before finally having the official LP diagnosis. I am going to start trying to identify my trigger foods because I can't live like this. I think I'm going to do the paleo diet. Hopefully it helps!

Google the AIP diet. This was very helpful to me after I stopped all the awful medications. I've followed it for over a year and have had just 2 major flare ups, which I controlled with 6 weeks of prednisone, although I hate that med, it does help when you have to do something serious!

Hi everyone. I've been reading about your oral LP and I desperately need advice. About 8 months ago my lips started to fling and burning too. I started to not be able to eat anything acidic so I changed my diet to pretty bland foods. Long story short, after numerous dermatologist appts, we finally took a biopsy. I was desperate for an answer. Two things came up: actinic chelitis, and lichten planus. I've done all the allergy tests and nothing comes up that I'm having issues with. I take a diruretic for blood pressure and Ménière's disease so the doctors are having me stop this to see if I have any improvement. I go next week to see an oral surgeon. We did some cryosurgery last week on a few sun spots I have but we could t finish because my lips are in too much pain from the LP. Doc thought it would be best to get allergy under control first. Problem is my doctor said the thiazide in the diruretic most likely over the years took me to a disease state so it could be months, even years to feel improvement. I'm desperate. I take tons of Advil and Valium to help with the pain and I only wear Vaseline. My diet is also pretty good. Does anybody have a pill, an ointment, a trick to help? They say don't stress but it's so incredibly painful it's hard not to feel stressed! I had o e glass of alcohol for Halloween lastnight and this am I wake up and I look like I'm wearing red wax Halloween lips! It just seems to be getting worse. Any tips? I explore you to give me some help- when your doctor even says they don't know how to help that's pretty discouraging! 😂 Thank you in advance for any help.

My oral pathologist told me never to use Vaseline because it is high in petroleum. "Aquaphor also contains petroleum, although in a much smaller quantity. Besides this, the healing version of this product also contains panthenol, which is used in products like shampoo and conditioner for the purpose of helping the skin to absorb the ingredients, a major difference between Vaseline, which is not absorbed into the skin. Aquaphor also contains various minerals that promote the re-growth of skin tissues. These extra ingredients result in a thicker, less oily consistency."

Ok thank you. It's funny how different docs say different things because my derm said aquaphor has lanolin in it and perhaps I could be allergic to it. At this point I will absolutely try everything. I also read all of your threads and decided to purchase squiggle toothpaste today too. Any other tid bids you can think of that have helped you or others I would be forever grateful to you if you passed it along. Thanks so much. Has your situation resolved itself at all? I dream of the day I can wear lip gloss again and not have lips like sand paper!

I haven't found a magic bullet. The flare-ups come and go for no apparent reason. Rinsing my mouth with water after every meal helps (brushing after every meal can be hard on the gums if you have LP in your mouth). Drink lots of water, which will hydrate your lips. If I eat dairy or any kind of candy, my lips go wonky. And try to de-stress. Good luck!

Heal your gut, try probiotics that are vegetarian. No dairy for 30 days. Your body is on overload telling you enough already.

Your medications are all bound with a lactose based component aka dairy. Ask your doctor to research a dairy free medication. Stop the pain meds, they all have dairy. I plead with you to try going 30 days completely dairy free. You will see a major transformation in your overall health. See a gastroenterologist
