different brand of sertaline will it make a difference?? Any advice appreciated xx

Hi, I've been on sertaline for 23days on 50mg. Seen my dr today and she wants me to go to 100mg starting from tomorrow. I picked up the new prescription and it's a different brand. Im using lupin 50mg which I still have a few left so could possibly double up and the new brand is ranbaxy. I've heard that people who have changed brands can have worse side effects and I'm worried especially with me upping my dose too. Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with changing brand and upping dose. Thanks for replying xxx

Thanks Weenett. I've just read about people having different side effects and I've got myself all worried about it but when your anxious it's hard not to!! I will try not to think about it and just let it do its job xx

funny you ask. i was wondering the same thing. i was on zo for a year-lupin brand and got back on in november on a different brand (i forget the name). i have had side effects like i never had before. so, i switched back less than two weeks ago to lupin. i haven't noticed a huge difference yet. i am hoping there is a difference! i have heard both ways-sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't.

Yes me too. I was on sertaline a few years ago no idea what brand it was as didn't pay attention but it worked, not many side effects and helped me. Came off them and I've been on lupin for 23days and I've had bad side effects this time but that could just be my body who knows?! I'm just scared as I know the 'active' ingredient is the same but the other ingredients can differ so I'm hoping that I don't feel worse for using a different brand xx

I can't remember if we chatted in another thread about this? I had a horrible reaction to a different generic last August. Was making me so sick I wasn't absorbing any of it. I had diarrhea for weeks and lost 25lbs in about 6 weeks. I was finally put on the brand that has worked in the past and it took a few weeks but eventually felt better

Thanks for getting in touch Lauren. Where you really?! Can you remember what you took? I'm on a generic brand now lupin (Europe) but wasn't sure if it would make a difference or not as heard stories about being side effects. New brand is ranbaxy (uk) not sure if that's a brand or another generic? I'm really scared to take them plus I'm upping my dose so think will get side effects from that too xx

I am in Canada so the brand I was on (that worked well) was called ACT. Then I was switched to TEVA and within 3 days of starting it I was suicidal. Never have I felt like that in my life. It was awful. If you're worried about it maybe you can locate the other brand? Have you started taking the new one yet?

Oh wow that's awful! You poor thing!! No im supposed to start it tomorrow but I may just take the 50mg again and phone the drs and ask and maybe see if the chemist can get me the other one I'm on, I really don't want that happening it's bad enough with the side effects as it is. How long have you been on sertaline for now? How are you finding it? Xx

It was pretty scary.  I have been on this time for about a year.  Before that I was on it for about 9 months after the birth of my daughter.  Before that I had no history of anxiety of depression.  I went back in last year after a visit to the chiropractor triggered an episode of anxiety (not emotionally, but physically they triggered something).  After a few weeks on the meds I was fine.  Continued on until the summer, then I was stung by multiple wasps and the meds I took for that interacted with the sertraline sad  Then right after that my prescription was changed and everthing went to hell.  Once I got back on the right prescription I was good....then I got pregnant.  I have increased my dose to 75mg last week as I think the hormone fluctuations are changing the way the med works sad

Yeah can imagine that was scary for you. You feeling ok now? Yes your hormones will be all over the place so will probably affect how you feel. I took the 50mg again today was to scared to go up. May see if I can change brand or have a look at the ingredients in both xx

Not all generics make a difference, but obviously there was something in one of the fillers that was making me sick

So far on lupin for almost two weeks and haven't noticed a huge difference in side effects with the two brands. I was hoping I would suddenly notice a huge change. Ha.

After I stopped the other brand, it was a good 3 weeks for it to leave my system...then once I started feeling better physically (after the diarrhea and nausea stopped) I was able to absorb the new one, then it was another few weeks to feel better after the side effects from the new one calmed down

    Hi Michelle,

It can happen, yes. I had it once when I went to a different pharmacy and they gave me a different brand, and although it wasn't terrible side effects, I was a bit sick. So when I went back, I showed them a packet of the one I had before that I'd been OK on and they just exchanged it. If you explain to them you usually get this one, they should do that for you smile

Thanks for getting in touch lucy. It's scary that can actually happen especially given what we are on the meds for. I took a 50mg again today to scared to up the dose. May see if I can change the brand or see what the ingredients says on both of them. How are you going? Xx
