Hi everyone. Just spent 7 days in hospital with bad diverticulitis attack. Only had a very mild case years ago. I had Iv antibiotics but cannot tolerate the oral ones for this disease. My doctor dr said the 7 days od intensive Iv antibiotivpcs should do the job. My question is,,when do you feel much better? I have no pain but still feel pretty lousy. Any replies appreciated.

    Hi Beth,

Just checking to see if you have seen some improvement.  Been thinking about you!

Hi Dee.i have seen a bit of improvement. Not as much as I would like though. Been more or less confined to the house , except for a brief outing and I was exhausted when I got back. Very uncomfortable when I eat and still feel nausea in mornings . I see my specialist for follow up,tomorrow. I expect he will say it will be a slow process. The drugs all have side effects too I find. Mebeverine that I can take if my bowel is too active makes me feel nauseous , and motilium which is great for my appetite but makes my bowel more active! Can't win lol. I will let you know what he says after I've seen him. I would love to feel a lot better soon . Thanks for asking, I really appreciate it. Hope you are well.

I've had nothing but belly issues for the last six months.

It started back almost 13 months ago, I had developed incredibly  Bad stomach pains and diarrhoea after several hours of this I started to pass bloody mucus I went to the hospital and was put on IV for a gastrointestinal infection.  I got better very fast everything was completely normal… Fast forward 4 1/2 months later, this past June the exact same thing happened to me I again went into the hospital with horrible stomach pains and passing bloody mucus this time a colonoscopy was performed to show slight inflammation of my intestine they diagnosed me with  Ischemic colitis and told me to quit smoking and I would be fine.  I have not been the same sense. I did quit smoking throughout the summer months I was so sick could hardly eat lost 20 pounds I went to the hospital for or five times was told every single time it was IBS.  Back in sept I did a stool test to test my calprotectin level. It came back at 110  which confirmed there was minor inflammation in my intestines so they performed a repeat colonoscopy on November 21 that colonoscopy came back completely normal confirming the doctors suspicions that it is IBS.  From August until September I just felt crummy often felt bloated gassy pressure but not unbearable pain. Since my colonoscopy in November the last four weeks I've been having bouts of awful stomach pain followed by many bowel movements not diarrhea. I seem to be constipated  for four or five days at a time and then I spend the day cleaning myself out with horrible pains. My colonoscopy in June and November both confirmed that I had diverticulosis however there was no sign of any infection at the time. I honestly can't keep living my life this way and being told over and over that I have IBS. I am 35 years old with three little kids and a husband at home and this is taking over my life I need help I need answers what is going on with me?

Crystal I had a lot of problems last year and tests came back diverticulosis but no infection but still felt ill. Of course very different story this year with a very nasty diverticulitis and 7 day hospital, stay,. My specialist says there is still so much unknown about this disease . That its people who don't eat fibre who get it etc, which they know now is untrue. I've always been very fit, ate really well vegetarian diet etc. all I know is I have been so ill and it will,be a slow recovery, and perhaps problems in the future, as I'm 62. It's so horrible to have any bowel issues. I sympathise.

      Hi Crystal

I hope you have joined the IBS forum on this site.  I'm not a sufferer myself, although others are.  However I have read that some people follow the low FODMAP diet to good effect.  Also stress and anxiety is a trigger - it's a vicious circle, the more you worry the worse the symptoms.  When you are a young mum it is hard to find time for yourself just to relax and de-stress I'm sure.  Can your husband keep an eye on the children for a bit whilst you try some relaxation techniques in your bedroom?  Just a thought.  I hope you get answers.

Just an update for everyone. Went to see specialist yesterday, he said considering how bad my diverticulitis was and how long I was in hospital etc, he thinks my recovery is normal.  Funnily enough I was having a dood day yesterday. Not so good today. Feeling pretty rotten today. Tried a bit of Xmas shopping but had to come home. Still getting terrible nausea in mornings. He seemed to think this will continue until my bowel settles. Depressing thought. I haven't come across anyone who has this nausea after a bad infection, just during the actual infection. I will have to be patient, although these bad days make me anxious that it's coming back. I think we probably all have that to some extent. Hope I've put this post in correct place. Best wishes and good health to all. Thanks for your support. I will continue to keep you informed. This has been so helpful. Thank you .

      Hi Beth

You are right in thinking that many people fear the infection is coming back at first.  You will have read posts from people who are scared to leave the house and fear every single twinge.  I was one of them myself when first diagnosed, and it does take a long time for your confidence to return.  You will slowly get fewer bad days and more good days, and as nothing develops from a twinge, more confidence in the healing process.

I always think it's like a broken ankle after the plaster comes off.  You know it has been set and is healing properly, but it still hurts for months, and you are scared to do too much in case it breaks again.  I fell down a ditch when out with my walking group many years ago - face down, bum up!!  To this day I cannot go rambling without other people and my walking stick, and I tend to look very carefully where I am going.

If you get twinges and are concerned, just go back on the clear fluid diet for a couple of days and that usually does the trick.  If it gets worse, that's the time to see a doctor.  Whilst I never had the nausea, just a few weeks of feeling rough after the antibiotics, to this day my appetite has virtually gone, particularly first thing in the morning.  I have just got up and I feel bloated today and with tummy niggles, but I know I ate too much Christmas treat food yesterday.  In a couple of hours, I will have "been" and will feel more normal.  So then I can brave the Christmas shops and fill up with petrol.  Best wishes.

Hi everyone. Just a quick question. I know everyone is busy. I now have constipation and I'm a bit worried about what to take. I have been taking benefibre a clear fibre you drink but that was useless, and Metamucil isn't much better, I know it's bad to be constipated but am a bit nervous about eating fibre. Any ideas? Thank you .

Try a stool softener.  I take 2 Fiber-Con and then when needed a stool softener.  Also be sure you are drinking plenty of water.  Fiber aids will add to constipation if you don't drink enough water with them.  I always have the constipation issue every few days - I think it is just the way I am, but I know it is also a concern when we have the divert. problem.  Good Luck.  I have never been able to sort mine out to where I feel like I am "normal".

Hi everyone. Just thought I would update on my health. Much better now. Have had 3 days where I have had no nausea and bowel feels more normal. I find fibre is now my friend! Still not 100% but getting there. I can't believe this has made me so ill. Thanks for all your support and can I ask if there's anything I can do to prevent it happening again? Seasons greetings to all.

Glad to hear you are getting there.  It seems impossible at first, doesn't it?  But time and patience does work.  As for prevention, make sure you keep your bowels regular without straining.  I do that by taking a daily stool softener, Fybogel.  It doesn't suit everyone, but there are different things on the market you can try.  I also take aloe vera capsules.  As for food I have used a food diary to identify my trigger foods, which are gluten and full fat.  I also avoid excess sugar, spice, alcohol, skins, but that is as much for my pre-diabetes and hiatus hernia as my DD.  I also try and avoid stress, as that can be a major trigger as well.  I treat myself once a month to some beauty therapy - facial, massage that sort of thing.  Happy New year

So glad you are feeling better - it seems like it takes forever, doesn't it.  As for future diet, I try to stay away from nuts, seeds, corn, popcorn, and high fat foods.  I get mixed up what diet I am following as I also have IBS, and was just diagnosed with acid reflux - that all really cramps my diet style!!  But thankful that I am still able to do everything I want/need to do for myself - at my age (74), there are a lot of people who are so much worse off than I.  Just take care, and at the first sign of any problems, go immediately to a liquid diet for a couple days or so, then to a soft diet and hopefully you can take care of it without medications.  Keep us posted - so glad you are better.

Thanks so much ladies. Advice very much appreciated. I will keep you informed. See my specialist again in February. He did say that if I got this again as bad I would have to see a surgeon. I presume he means a resection(  I think it is called) . I definately do not want that. I have already had a hysterectomy, plus further prolapse surgery, and it was after the prolapse surgery I started to get problems. So will do everything I can to prevent it happening again. Thanks once again for your help .
