Diverticulitis attack.

Hi everyone. Just spent 7 days in hospital with bad diverticulitis attack. Only had a very mild case years ago. I had Iv antibiotics but cannot tolerate the oral ones for this disease. My doctor dr said the 7 days od intensive Iv antibiotivpcs should do the job. My question is,,when do you feel much better? I have no pain but still feel pretty lousy. Any replies appreciated.

Hi Beth, sorry tof hear of your problems. The anti biotics should do the trick but be careful with your diet for the weeks ahead. Avoid seeds, nuts, tomato pips and high fibre. Above all else, avoid cheese.

Thanks Ken. I am being very careful now that I have my appetite back. The specialist said eat anything as they don't believe it's diet related any more, but I'm not sure they are right about that. He did say they are finding out new things  about it all the time. I am taking no chances lol. Thanks for the reply 😀

Once again asking for advice on this great forum. Seem to have gone backwards yesterday and today. Frequency, not diarrhoea though.  and nausea back. I had been feeling so much better too. Is it normal to have a setback like this? Replies appreciated.

Hi Beth, yes, it is common to have setbacks. Sometimes during the healing stage, something you've eaten or drunk (even things that don't normally cause problems), can cause trouble. It's like having a bad cut and you knock the scab off. I hope you recover soon.

Thanks Ken. Yes I had eaten something I had been avoiding. It's hard to know when to do these things, also I think I was adding too much fibre . I ca re out of hospital just over a month ago and I suppose o should know by reading these forums that it is a slow process to get back to normal. Thanks for the reply, it's reassuring.

Not sure where to put this. Just thought I would let everyone know I'm feeling much better. It took 7 weeks for this to happen! Bowel much more normal now, and back to a normal diet , being careful what I'm eating though. What I have learned about this is that doctors don't know much about it! There is so much  conflicting information . These forums give you more information than any doctor. Thank you to everyone for your help. Now I'm worried about getting it again. I don't really think there's a lot I can do about that, as I was doing all the right things before. Maybe a bit of diet modification. Hope everyone is well.

Hi Beth, glad to hear you are on the mend. Just be careful with what you eat, you will learn by trial and error what things are a trigger and it seems that different things affect different people. You are right about the ignorance of doctors, they can diagnose it but can't treat it. Good luck with your recovery.

Hi everyone. Need help. I'm about 8 weeks down the track from acute diverticulitis attack. 7 days in hospital. Have been making a slow but steady recovery. Bm's reasonably normal. Have been eating reasonably normally but being careful. Yesterday I had mashed veg and beans and last night had glass of Metamucil  (think its fibogel in U.S. ) to keep the fibre up.i have found on the odd occasion that i use I it that it doesn't really agree with me, but I thought I would try it again because I heard it was useful. Today I have felt unwell with a bit of pain and frequency again. Feel like I did when I came out of hospital, but not quite so bad. Could this be a setback because of too much fibre? I am so disappointed, I was doing so well. Terrified now it's coming back. Any help appreciated.

Hi Beth, sorry to hear you are having trouble. To be honest, I find it wise to avoid ALL forms of fibre until at least a week or two after the flare up has calmed down. Fibre is eaten to make your bowels regular, something you don't need during a flare.

    Hi Beth,

So sorry you are having trouble again.  It is Metamucil here in the US.  I can't take it - causes too much gas and bloating.  I take 2 Fiber Con tablets.  It could be that if you weren't used to taking the metamucil, it didn't agree with you thus causing the pain and frequency.  Or was too much  - I know you need to start with a small amount and build up.  I'd try not taking it again and see if that clears up the problem - then you will know that is what it was.  There are many other types of fiber supplements that are not as hard on your system.  Or else use a lesser amount of the metamucil and build up.  Don't panic - remember stress causes its own set of problems! (easier said than done, I know).  Best to you - keep us informed.

Thanks Dee. .I'm so disappointed to be feeling like this nearly 8 weeks after this all started. I felt lousy yesterday. Sick and shivery etc. today my bowel has settled a bit , I don't feel sick, but got a stomach ache now! Feels like I will never be normal again. I was really good during the week. Felt much better. I hope it was just the Metamucil. My whole life has stopped at the moment. I read about people going back to work etc. I am retired but have a volunteer role that I haven't been well enough to return to. I know I had a bad bout but is this normal.?  Some people are ok within weeks. Thanks for any replies .

There are other fiber supplements that may work better for you.  Get the ones that are soluble fiber - or if you can find them there - try the fiber one tablets.  I take two with a glass of water and they seem to help..  I am struggling now with acid reflux - seems like one thing gets better and something else pops up.  Really do not want to take more meds!!

My problem isn't not going, it's going too often atm. Probably because of too much fibre! Lol.  My problem is finding a happy medium and wondering when I am going to start really feeling better , feel like it has gone on forever. 8 weeks is a long time .
