Hi all I just wanted to share my experiences really. I have been dizzy since 2011 it started on holiday from the plane. I have had all the tests and eventually diagnosed with vestibular hypofuntion with fluctuating compensation. I wS made redundant in oct 2011 but not due to illness. Started work again on a casual basis I day a week gradualy up to 3days this year in jan to July. It was hard but acheivable. Ive ben doing the vrt for some time and recently got discharged as was coping well. Ive been consumed with anxiety at times and like others not wanted to go out. Igot a puppy last year and she has helped me get back out and about again. I started to get my life back and even applied for and got another job starting on the 24th of this month. At the start of nov my dizziness increased and now im back to square one very spinny, unable to drive cant go out on my own etc etc.. I just hope it settles by the 24th nov. Thanks if anyone reads and replies. Emma

    Hi Emma,

Im Jan, thank you for replying to my post earlier.

This forum is wonderful for bringing people together and sharing everytrhing this awful condition brings.

I can relate to your words and truly empathise. The anxiety over little things that normally wouldnt bother me before. Feelings of depression and hoplessness over the situation. I have been unable to walk outside on my own for nearly a year now, and sometimes feel my life is over. I have tried using a stick, but my confidence is rock bottom.

I too have thought aout getting a dog, and have looked into mobility dogs. I wondered if anyone here has had experience of this?

There is also the financial implications this year has brought to our household being off sick from work for so long and not looking like I shall be returning. I do hope things settle for you Emma.

Hello.. I was diagnosed with BPPV in December 2012 and I havent been the same person since.  Ive seen 2 ENT specialists, a cardiologist, had my eyes tested, had numerous visits to several GPs, blood tests and balance tests and been referred for counselling as they have pretty much all written me off as being anxious and depressed.  What the ENT specialist said was I had developed psychogenic vertigo due to the BPPV being so traumatic.  I do find that when Im stressed it is considerably worse and I have developed a health anxiety which makes me very watchful of my body.  Dont underestimate the effects of anxiety on a condition such as dizziness, it can truly make it a million times worse or even bring it on.  I find it interesting that your dizziness started shortly before a new job and Im wondering if there maybe is some underlying anxiety surrounding starting something new? Anxiety sits just below the surface all the time, well thats true in my case, and it doesnt take much to push me over the edge.  Depressive illness and anxieties go hand in hand with inner ear problems unfortunately and I think its time that doctors started treating the person and not just the condition. Im going to try pilates and yoga so maybe that might be something to try, just to realx you a little maybe? I really hope things settle for you and you can start your new job,  Dont give up Emma, we all know exactly how you feel and its not nice.  But there will be an answer out there Im sure.  Take the best care, Lisa x

Thanks lisa, yes I have considered that the new job may have given me some anxiety but I was excited about it and not stressed, I knw that it could be lurking under the surface, its prob a combination of things that have set it off again its just that it hasnt been this bad for quite a while. I live with it every day and have beem managing things but it opens up that can of worms when its bad and out floods all the anxieties again. I think its thecsame for most people that when we get stressed it doesnt help matters, its also good to knw other people understand this horible illnesss. Thanks x

I have suffered from occasional dizziness nearly all my life and all doctors could do was give me tabletsto stop me being sick from it.

At age 59 last December I had to have a grommet fitted in my right ear because I had developed glue ear. Not only did my hearing get bck to 100%ut haven't been dizzy sinse.

Apparently it can be caused through small grains in the semi-circular canals which are the balance organ. There are special exercises you can do to relieve the problem - your doctor should be able to refer you.

Thanks for that, I was refered to the physio to have vestibular rehabilitation exercise and had been doing them religiously for over a year. They definitely helped and in october this yr I was discharged from the physio and told I dont need to do the exercises any more unless I have a period of dizziness again. I have started them again now but at the moment they are not helping. Due to the nature of my condition my brain compensation fluctuates. I know it will clear to a manageable state again but its just I hadnt been this dizzy for quite sometime and it knocks you for six when it comes..
