Do you regret cholecystectomy?

I'm scheduled for gallbladder surgery next week. I've been doing a lot of research and something I can't find real clearly is whether you're satisfied or regret the surgery? I've read a lot of indications, contraindications, symptoms before and after...right now this is my decision and I feel pretty confident about my decision...

But just wondering if anyone out there regrets the decision

I had my gallbladder removed in emergency surgery about a month ago. I have had some issues with the healing mostly due to my age and being a diabetic but not with the results at all. I live alone and was not prepared for it. I think that if I had it done 2 years ago in a scheduled surgery it would have been better though as I had a gallbladder attack then and went to the hospital but they tried a different approach then involved getting a stone out of a bile duct that was stuck there causing the pain however I went on to end up with a gallbladder filled with stones and not knowing it so ended up in the end having it removed in an emergency surgery. Yes get it done as you don't want it to end up being an emergency like it was with me!

I was told I needed mine removed. But I heard lots of bad stuff from people who did. So I did more research and there are different ways to handle these problems besides cutting it out. For me I just cut out fatty foods and red meat and dairy(all of it). And I have no attacks. I don't like how in the USA it's take a pill or cut it out or off. Why not cure the illness? There's a pill you can take to desolve the stones. I forget the name, but why not find what is causing it and stop doing that. I also do not eat process food. So far, it's working and as long as I do not eat those items, no pain, no attacks.

I just realised it is a long time since I last posted here. I had my op about 20 months ago. I have had no problems and no pain or other symptoms since then. I eat a normal diet, though I do try to avoid some fatty foods for weight control reasons. I would highly recommend that you have the op if that is what your specialist recommends. I also know several other people with the same experience.

The 'problems' with taking the pills are several fold. Firstly they don't get rid of the problem so you will probably be on them for the rest of of life and still have to eat a restricted diet. They can also reduce the size of the stones so they exit the gallbladder but then get stuck in the bile duct. That can be extremely painful and life threatening as they can also block the pancreatic duct leading to acute pancreatitis and even necrosis (death) of the tissue. I know at least two people that died of this, including one of my oldest and closest friends.

Please go for the op. As I mentioned in a previous posts these forums are largely from people who have had problems but people who have had a successful experience do not come back so you get a very negatively biased view.

Absolutely no regrets whatsoever! Had my operation in February 2020, made a good recovery and everything went back to normal ........ no more attacks and no more worry every time I took a mouthful of food.

One thing I was told, by various medics prior to my surgery, was to ensure that the surgeon had a high frequency rate in performing this operation. My surgeon did, and I firmly believe that not all surgeons are equal and that this can impact on outcomes.
