Does anyone else have these symptoms?

Hi, my IBS symptoms started 2 1/2 months ago just before my wedding (I was extremely stressed!) They started off as mild diarrhoea and occasional sharp pains on the lower right side if my abdomen, which caused me initially to think it might be my appendix. However, when nothing more serious developed I decided to wait until after the wedding and visit my GP.

Following blood tests my GP said everything seemed fine and diagnosed me with IBS. My symptoms seem to flare up if I am having a stressful day (which I realise is quite common) and range from bloating (particularly after my evening meal), quite bad gas, occasional diarrhoea but the most irritating problem is the weird twinges I get (mainly on the right lower side, although this can vary slightly - today its just under my bellybutton!) The pain is mild and like a twingy stinging sensation, its also sometines tender to touch?

I realise my symptoms are very mild and I am extremely lucky, but I was just wondering if anyone else has these twingy pains just to put my mind at rest really?

Hi there, all the symptoms you are describing are classic IBS.  The twingy pain I get and can resonate all around my abdomen, even into my lower back, I have terrible fatigue as well.  Has your doctor not referred you, you need to have a Colonoscopy really, if they find nothing, only then do they diagnose you!  Did your doctor only do bloods?  This is bizarre bcause they should have done a colonoscopy really.  i would ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist.  My IBS has caused me to have to leave my job altogether, stress is a major factor but we struggle to contain it thus leading to more flares.

My IBS is always with bouts of diarrhoea and excrutiating pain even on same level par to labour, keep Buscopan nearby to you, they are wonderful!

I would definitely ask for a referral to a Gastro Consultant.  Hope you find some calm with it soon.

How ? Wow you're lucky!  It's a shame you have ibs but lucky you didn't have to have the Colonoscopy!

I had an ultrasound which showed some organs but not others. I also had a pelvic ultrasound which I couldn't tolerate.  I had a stool test for H pylori and fecal calpractin and a celiac test which were all negative.  It was then suggested I have the ultrasound again and an MRI or CT scan to make up for the pelvic ultrasound.  However, when I saw an eighth doctor, he told me I didn't need these tests because I had had the same symptoms for three months with no new symptoms appearing.  He diagnosed IBS and didn't mention a colonoscopy probably because he saw no suspicious symptoms that would warrant it.

Hi Philippa, I'm glad you have a diagnosis of ibs and nothing more serious, my concern when I got my diagnosis was it was cancer, like what my dad had. IBS is Nasty, BUT it isn't life threatening at least, although exceptionally irritating when it flares!

I was also very worried about cancer because seven doctors didn't know what was wrong.  I googled too much in an effort to give them something more to work on and had to ask for some tests.  I also made copious lists of stomach conditions on my mobile for my weekly visits to the doctor.  I would eliminate some things during my appointment and then the following week my list had increased again!  I was amazed when I was diagnosed because I didn't expect it and I had prepared myself for something serious rather than something simple and non threatening.  Nevertheless, as you say, it can still be very annoying.

      Hi philippa

How does the doctor know if it's a cancer or not? As you said I kept going back to him for one and half year with the same symptoms. Only mine is with sever constipation, Pain and burning. But as much I explained to him he and worries about it his more cool and not worrying. I even cried once in his office out of my fears.

If you pass blood in your stools, have persistent bloating, an early feeling of fullness, or rapid, unexplained weight loss, these could be red flag symptoms and the doctor would then order further tests to rule out serious conditions such as cancer, or Inflammatory Bowel disease.  If you are not experiencing these symptoms, then your doctor will not have serious concerns.
