    Hi Sandra,

I have 3 fibroids, one at the top of my uterus and two near the cervix.  The two were very obvious and caused a lot of pressure. They were big enough that they interfered when I had to insert a tampon.  I am almost finished my third month on Fibristal (which as I understand it is the same as Esmya).

I can feel for myselft by simply inserting a finger that the two lower fibroids have shrunk incredibly.  I can't feel them, but I can feel the fibroid hanging on the top.  I don't think that it has changed much in size at all.  But it is a different type of fibroid than the lower ones.

My ultrasound is scheduled for Feb 6th.  I won't get results for about 2-3 weeks.  I have heard some women say they have had excellent results shrinking fibroids, while others have no change in fibroid size.  I am thinking that it depends on the type of fibroid.  Especially since I can feel the difference.  I used to have three fibroids that equaled the size of a 4.5 month pregnancy.  And now I'm sure it is almost half that size.

    Good luck with your scan!

Yes Karmaway, I did get side effects.

The gynocologyst that prescribed Fibristal for me lied when he told me that there are absolutely no side effects.  I laughed and told him that even Tylenol has side effects.

The sheets of info the pharmacist gave me lists all possible side effects.

Within 3 days my bleeding stopped (I was on day 107 of bleeding) and I was having hot flashes.  I get them every morning a couple hours before my alarm goes off.  They have been becoming less intense as my body gets used to the drug.  Now that I have less than 2 weeks to go, I hardly notice the hot flashes.  But they were extreme in the beginning.

Also in weeks 2 & 3 I had a vaginal burning sensation accompanied by a brownish smelly discharge.  I can only assume that the uterus had shed a layer of cells.

During the 2nd week I noticed my fingernails were peeling, breaking and had become very very soft.  I can't scratch a price tag off anything anymore.  So I began taking calcium supplements.

This is not the first time I've been on hormone therapy.  In 2001 I went through two rounds of hormone therapy to get my endometriosis under control.  The calcuim levels dropped so much that I fractured my ankle while jogging.  So I was half expecting to see similar issues this time around.  I don't jog anymore, but the fingernails were the same last time as well.

I have not had as severe memory lapses as I did in 2001.  I will have problems remembering the odd word frequently through the day.  Which affects my communication ability with staff and clients.  But back in 2001 it was severe, I couldn't even remember to pack my kid's lunch for school back then.

I do have some dizziness.  But I also have permanent inner ear damage from an infection which causes vertigo all the time.  So I'm not sure if the dizziness I am experiencing is from the Fibristal or from the ear damage.  In any case, it is short spurts of dizziness that is over in under 2 minutes.

I'm not experiencing any bloated feeling at all.  I have put on about 6 lbs.  So I'm thinking it likely slowed my metabolizm a bit.  Which is expected when we go through menopause naturally.  So why would it be any different when we are put into it artificially eh?  (notice my accent wink I'm Canadian)

I am loving the fact that I can now wear white panties.  And I don't gush blood with every movement that tenses my abdominal muscles.  I have been striggling to avoid the hysterectomy for decades.  Before starting on fibristal, I was beginning to think that the big H was going to have to happen.  But now I'm very optimistic.  I'm still hoping that the hospital in Toronto that does MRI guided Focused Ultrasound will be able to take me as a patient and eliminate the fibroids by destroying them from the inside out.  It is non-invasive, no surgery at all.  The patient lies on a bed face down and the machine shows the doctor exactly where the fibroids are and zap, zap, zap with the ultrasound and they are gone.  Patient can go home the same day.
