Dosage of Sertraline

Hi.  I was prescribed the above today and told that I would be on a low dose however when I went to collect the prescription I noticed that 50mg doesn't seem to be low to me.  Usually this type of medication comes in 20mg doses and anyone I've known taking it has always been on a lower dose.  I refused the prescription as I want to speak to my Doctor again before I decide whether or not I'm going to take it.   Does anyone have any experience of this drug?

    Hi Craftylady.

no that sounds correct. Some AD's like sertraline and venlafaxine are supplied in different weights so 25 or 50 would be the starting dose.

then you have meds like citilopram and some other ssri's that start at about the 5mg. The maximum dose for sertraline is 200mg per day, so 50 isn't too much.

No, actually 50mg is low. I'm at 100mg and stabilized.

Meeting my doctor Friday to start getting off them. Been on them for 20 yrs. Let see what happens.

    Wish me luck.

Thank you Weenet but I haven't started them yet.  2 days in and I can't take them.  The phobia has taken over and I'm worried.....  They'll probably sit in the cupboard now like the others!!  I'm seeing GP again on Monday but he can't physically hold me down and administer them so I'm a bit of a lost cause really.

50mg os moderately low, usually goes up on 25mg,high dose being 200mg. I have been on other ADs and the doses have gone up in 20mgs x

My doctor prescribed me the 50mg and told me to break it in half to do 25 mg. I am right now weaning off it after 2 months of taking it. Maybe you can ask to start at 25mg and see if it helps

I've been on 50mg Sertraline for Six weeks now, due to Anxiety issues. I did have the few stated side effects, such hot flushes and sweating bouts. But they were few and far between, as for now, I feel more myself and much brighter.

Hi Craftylady, I've only just been prescribed Sertraline, like you, and took my first dose yesterday evening. My doctor told me to start off with half a tablet for the first few days and then take the full 50mg if all ok. In the leaflet that came with mine it does say to start off with half the dose but I guess that depends on what it is prescribed for. If you are really worried about the dosage, I would say start off with half the tablet (it easily breaks in half) and then increase it after a few days to a week if you are coping well with it. That would seem better than not taking it at all. I don't like medication much either but after 20+ years of suffering and loneliness, I realise that I have to accept it : (  Wishing you well....
