Does anyone have tips to enable me to sleep on my back after surgery. Should I buy a V pillow!!!! Also, how long do I have to sleep on my back.

Took delivery of a large piece if foam to put on a chair as my suite is too low so uncomfortable!!!!

    Thinking back now I wish I would have bought a pregnancy pillow... they look so comfortable, I still might buy one. I am 4 weeks post op and sleeping on my stomach. You can use a pillow under your legs or a rolled up towel if need be. If you sleep on your side always remember to put a pillow in between your legs. It's hard to find that perfect position to sleep in after surgery. Best wishes!

      Fourteen weeks post op,and still have to have the pillow between knees i find it impossible to lye on OP side.

    yeah, make sure your seat is high enough and also your bed .. 

    is there not someone come to your house to assess it ? 

    I  am not able to answer your question as I had one THR surgery at a time and was allowed to sleep on unoperated side ..

    There are many forum members who have all kind of tips how to sleep on your back comfortably ... I read that some members practiced sleeping on back before surgery ...

      I had to measure the height of my bed which is fine but suite too low. I have attempted to sleep on my back but it is very difficult at present

      Get yourself a v pillow they are amazing, I laid mine on the mattress and then put a couple of my sleeping pillows on top so I was partially sitting up, it was very comfortable.

    Not easy 😟, I was told I had to sleep on my back for 8 weeks, I managed 6 before rolling onto my good side using a pillow between my legs to reduce dislocation risk . You need to ask your physiotherapist or surgeon about your particular rules and restrictions , And my big help were sleeping pills I took them every other night to get as much rest and healing time as possible xxx

    I never slept on my back. I already knew from a previous attempt over the summer that this would only lead to many sleepless nights, so I used a pillow designed specifically to prevent the risk of adduction. As a result, ever since my op five weeks ago I have had wonderful full nights sleep every single night. But like Renee, I only had one side done.

    I had bi lateral and should have got a v pillow but I just built my pillows up with cushions, and had a pillow under my legs.    It took a few different ways over the first week home but eventually found the most comfortable position.   I found a slim cushion at the base of the back also helped.

    ​Sleep is difficult, and I would sleep during the day.   Up for breakfast, around 1-2 hrs then back on bed for exercises, I would stay and read and the next thing I had slept again..

    Slept on my back for 6 weeks, when I tried to sleep on my side having been told I could I found that hard to begin with.

    ​Good luck, any questions just ask I am now 4mths post op.

    I hated sleeping on my back, I just couldn't get comfortable and fall asleep.

    Now I am 8 weeks post op I find it is the best position for me. I go to sleep on my side but end up turning on my back again ha ha.

    Hi Ann, just regarding your suite, are they not offering to raise it if it's too low? Really important to have things the right height. They did my bed and sofa. Sleeping on your back is v irritating and challenging....did it for 6 weeks, now have a cushion between my knees sleeping on non operated side, still not always v comfortable on operated side.(5 months post op. Just a single hip.) Good luck.

      The height of my bed is perfect it is just my suite which is too low. I opted for a hard foam cushion but just awful will have to get something sorted. Thanjs for advice though.

    Hello Ann,

    I had both hips done on November 15 ( a month ago yesterday!). Prior to surgery, for 5 years, I became a side sleeper (with pillows between my legs) due to the arthritis in my hips. I didn't think I would be able to sleep on my back after surgery, due to sleeping on my sides for so long.  However, I found out in the hospital that I could! The hospital bed was inclined the whole time I was admitted and I found I could sleep in that position.  So, when I got home I used ordinary pillows to prop myself up, similar to how I was in the hospital.  I think a combination of the medication, the pillows, being tired, and very little pain allowed me to sleep that way. It's been 4 weeks now, and I am still sleeping well, although I'm sleeping flat now without propping myself up like I did in the beginning.  I may just be a back sleeper again, after years.  I'll know for sure when I can stop using the abduction pillow, in a couple of weeks. Good luck! you'll find a way, especially when you're tired!

      Thanks for the advice Jim. Can I also ask what type of sedation you opted for I still can't make my mind up.

      I had general anesthesia. It worked out well for me although I did get sick twice (vomit), once in the evening after surgery and once the next morning. Could have been the pain meds that caused it though.

      Thanks for the reply Jim. I am absolutely terried to go through this operation but I have to find the strength. You seem to be recovering well - good luck.

      I'm confident you'll do fine Ann. It's normal to be nervous, you wouldn't be human if you were not. And if you are a worry wart like me you'll create something to worry about if you have to. Have confidence in your surgical team, they are well prepared. Prepare yourself as best you can at home, for your return. Line some help up for the first 2 weeks or so, you'll need a little in the beginning. And above all, keep a positive attitude. It really helps! I tend to be a negative nelly but promised myself I would stay positive through this, and it really does help. It won't be long and you'll be on the other side, thankful that you did it. Good luck, although I'm certain you won't need it!
