Down in the dumps And can't see a light at the end of the tunnel

im 39 days post op and fed up. I haven't had a bath or shower for 40 days because I simply can't climb into the bloody bath. .

I have had a wash but it's not the same . Beginning to wonder if this was a good idea.

For six weeks I used a tub transfer bench, which sits both inside and outside the tub. You sit down while outside the tub, then turn around, and you can lift your legs over, then shower sitting down. I attached a photo. They are easily ordered on Amazon.

I haven't lowered myself down into a tub for a bath for years and never will, as that's too hard for me. If you are still unable to lift your leg high enough to get over the edge of the tub, might you be able to get some PT to help you strengthen your leg and get it more flexible?

I didnt get into a bath for about 7 weeks, then i started to then 4 weeks later i had surgery on my collar bone so once again, no baths. Dont worry, you will get there eventually. If i was desperate i would go to a relatives for a shower haha. Stay strong. Its still early days

I felt the same way. For the first two weeks I gave myself a sponge bath. Then for about another 2-3 weeks I sat on a bench chair. After that I stood up and was finally able to shower. That was the best feeling in the world!

I know one thing though, I can't use the soap I used for those first 2 weeks because the smell of it just nauseates me.

Just always remember to get into the shower/bath with your unoperated leg first!

Hi jean i have a shower over the bath and from day 3 have used a swivel bath seat which fits across the bath, you just sit on lift one leg at a time over the bath edge, the seat swivels then you stand up. Works really well, got mine off gumtree but seen them on eBay too for around ten to twenty pounds.hope this is of help to you. Good luck, carol

Been there too Jean!! Just this past Saturday, thanks to my wonderful hubby, I was able to finagle my way into the shower!! Hate those "sponge baths"! My challenge is being non weight bearing on my operated leg and no hip flexion past 80 degrees. I went almost 4 weeks!! At rehab they helped me wash my hair but it was hard being in wheelchair and tilting head back! Hurt my neck! Plus it wasnt a very good wash! So this past Saturday it was heaven! Even blow dried my hair!! Be patient you will get there! I know it's hard! Hugs, 🤗🤗. LD

Oh we did try the shower chair burly because of these darn hip precautions I was unable to swing my legs around into tub. I was so unhappy because I wanted to shower so bad!

Meant but because of hip precautions!!

I actually got up into the bath tub on my good leg and sat down on the 'in tub' shower chair that my husband put in behind me after I got into the tub

    Hi Jean,

If the bath bench doesn't work for you, get someone to take you to a local gym or ymca with a walk- in shower. It will do you a world of good. And ... an adventure out will lift your spirits too.

Don't despair - this all gets easier.

    Hugs,

    L

If going to gym be sure to use shower shoes so you don't slip! My daughter suggested to me to go to a hotel and ask for a handicap room. They have walk in showers

You'll be better in a few weeks. Your body is still heeling. It takes time for the bone to grow around the implant to stabalize the components.

I only take showers have two THR.

Its all about the quality of life with no pain while walking you'll be glad you did have THR in a few more weeks.

Hi Jean,   geez I wish I could say something to cheer you up but i am also extrememly depressed,  It is exactly 3 months ago today that i had my surgery, and still cant walk without a cane.  I definitely wish i had never had this done.

I can relate. Im 5 months and in a worse state that i was before the surgery, but not all recoveries are gonna take a short amount of time. We are all different and we are recover differently. It will be worth it when you start making progress 😊
