I refused this drug when scores worsened five years after taking Fosamac followed by Evista. I have DDD with osteoporosis needed fusion L4/5 a little more than two years ago.  My Endocronologist offered Prolia or Forteo as the next step. I declined, and now take, in addition to Citracal with D, magnesium, K2, Boron and Vit. D. I walk 5 days a week for 30 minutes or more, use stair master at gym for 5 minutes, and enjoy a healthy diet with lean meat, chicken, fish and plenty of fruit and vegetables. I cut back on caffeine as it appears research has established a link; less calcium absorption. I was never a smoker and I don’t drink. This is a very informative site and have learned from others.  The pharmaceutical companies are the only ones benefiting from these drugs.

thank you so much for taking time to respond. i am going to take homeopathic products for a year and continue following  a diet similar to what you recommend along with my exercise program.   then in one year after my next bone density test, i  will again address this issue.

Anhaga hit the nail on the head. My case is “worse case scenario” and far removed from yours. Your t score is borderline, mine is overboard. And mine was despite many many years of already doing everything right, bone broths, leafy greens, excercise, walk, yoga, all the right supplements, active lifestyle, you name it I did it. I danced

( jazz/hip hop/Zumba, anything fast paced) And no breaks. That was why no one suspected it even though I have PMR/GCA and on prednisone, which itself can cause osteoporosis. Turns out I’ve had it for years and years undiagnosed, so I was too far gone to just continue on the natural  path. I’ve only just retired and have a lot of living to do yet. I just walked on a glacier  (very carefully mind you], and despite my intense fear of heights took a helicopter ride to get there so I have a bucket list of experiences to do yet and they get more intense from here. When you’re told you could break your back from coughing you tend to listen. You are no where near that point yet, and hopefully you never will be, and in your shoes, if you haven’t already been on the right supplements and following the right lifestyle then I’d do it now. Anything you can do to help yourself cannot harm you. Good luck, and let us know how you progress.

You say you've had no fractures, which is very encouraging.  The one thing the DXA scan can't tell us is how strong our bones are, which would be helpful.  Although I haven't got osteoporosis, nor have I had any fractures, I have lost a couple of inches of height, which appalls me actually.  If you haven't lost any significant height I would consider that a very good sign.

I forgot to mention that the there can also be ethnic differences.  I understand, for instance, that the measurement of OP in a slight Indian woman is different than it would be for a large boned American or Northern European.  So it is a very inexact science, although the best we have at the moment.

No height loss, no hump, no breaks, ..wish I could say no osteoporosis 🤪

Another interesting thing is that I know many women who have never bothered with a scan and live in merry contentment because they are unaware!

Yep...that was me until November! Blissfully unaware, then boom. Trimming the standard roses, stood on a loose rock  and swan dived into the sunken garden. Landed amongst the thorns with a sprained ankle that didn’t heal well because of prednisone...hence the Dexa. It’s so hard when you have no symptoms and feel like climbing trees and swinging from the rafters 🤸???( slight exaggeration with PMR but you get my drift) only to remember to look down when you walk and put two feet on each step sideways. 🙇???

Yes, that was me. Until I did break another vertebrae then I wished that I had taken the dexa scan offered to me when I fractured the previous one. If I had, my t-scores might not have got so bad as I would have been made aware earlier. I also would not have fractured the lumbar vertebrae and be suffering the pain from that.

What I find extraordinary is that you have swandived like this, yet you sprained something, didn't break anything.  And now they are telling you not to even sneeze!  Are you sure they looked at the right DXA scan when they told you your t-score?  cheesygrin

Good point and if I hadn’t asked for a copy of the report to check myself

I’d have argued even more. Only ever sprained both ankles albeit very simply so the diagnosis of how severe it is cam as such a shock. Now that they are aware they are treating me with kid gloves but that doesn’t sit well with me.

Mine is -4.3 lower spine and I am refusing the drugs.

I was given the speeches too about breaking bones etc but so far so good.

I do have a lot of issues with my back but mostly due to age.

I worry about breaking bones but take great care around the home and when out by using a walker.

Arthritis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis and a nerve possibly coming from the discs into the sacroiliac add up to a reduced lifestyle.

My job is now keyboard warrior lol.
