Due for a colonoscopy next week and I’m feeling anxious

Started  about ten weeks ago, constant upset tummy, and very unpleasant smells, loose stools.  I’ve changed my diet to a low residue.  Doctor thinks it could be crohns.  I thought it was food poisoning but I’ve has 2 stool tests and bloods done.  I’m wondering will I ever be able to get back to normal.  When I go out I have to have an empty tummy.  It’s making me feel so fed up.

So I had the colonoscopy yesterday, they said everything looked healthy, which is good but now I’m confused as to why I can’t keep any food down me without having foul smelly diarrhoea constantly.  I’m beginning to think it’s all in my head,  they didn’t say there was signs of mucous, which is normal and some inflammation, probably due to upset stomachs for months.  They’ve taken biopsy’s to see if they can find anything else.  Also they have recommend an endoscopy.  I might get myself tested for glucose, lactose and yeast allergies too.  Anyone else’s had any similar experiences ?

Sorry that was meant to say they did say there was mucous and inflammation

Hi, good news about the colonoscopy results.  So pleased for you.  You really need to ask questions and subject to their answers, you need to follow through with further questions.  It could be that you have been suffering for some time as your insides could be inflamed with an infection, you could have an allergy to something.  Had you eaten anything different before all this problem started, been on holiday etc etc.  Look back on what you had been doing before the problem started.  Other than these suggestions, I have run out of thoughts and you need to ask more questions of the experts.  Good Luck. x

Funny enough I started having indigestion pains early in the year, they sent me for an ultra sound and once again all was fine.  I’ve cut out wheat and yeast etc and nothing makes any difference.  I did however go to a restaurant in London and had chicken and since then the upset tummy has been just unbearable but  the doctors have tested the stools for bacteria so that’s why I am so confused.  Thanks Maureen x

Hi Lisa. I've never had a problem with chicken, maybe fried but I only have about 3 pieces, 5 times a year.

My biggest problem is when I have too much fiberous foods, beef, pork, processed meats and foods that sit in your gut because they take to long to digest.

I’ve tried to cut out all of these foods, im going to keep a food diary too, thank you

Oh chicken is one of the worst things and to have it in a restaurant !!!  It might be a good idea to have stool test again.  Also  grapes and nuts are not good if you have sore insides.  I used to love grapes and nuts but I can no longer tolerate them.  Keep thinking and build up a diary of what you eat and then your reaction over a couple of days.  It may just be that you have become intolerant to a certain food or ingredient.  My husband is a firm believer in fresh food prepared by ourselves.  That way we know what is in it.  He always reads labels etc and when he points out things that are in the prepared food today, it worries me.  We look back on when we were younger and all this tummy trouble was not around then, it seems that its since our food has been played about with and things are added to keep them longer plus all the antibiotics etc that farmers have to feed the cattle etc with nowadays, that is a worry.  Good luck to you lisa81752 and lets us know how it goes.  x

This is so true Maureen,  all the preservatives that they use are frightening and it’s all about money !  I’ve been keeping a diary so hopefully that will help in the long run.  Just want to get my life back to normal now.  Take care and thanks for listening, it really helps x

You will get your life back but I am not going to say it will definitely be 100% because obviously you have no answers at the moment.  I have been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus 6 years ago and touch wood and being on the right medication, after three years I was doing good.  Still doing good but you do have to watch what you eat and stress levels.  You soon learn to live and manage the illness.  Good luck. x

I’m so sorry to hear this but I’m so happy for you that you can at least try and keep it under control.  I am a bit of a worrier which doesn’t help matters.  Take care Maureen x

Definitely keep a food diary and be tested for allergies too.   I wonder if your blood tests showed elevated levels of inflammation in your body       It is a good idea to have the endoscopy to see  what that shows

Yes I may ask my doctor the same question Gloria, good idea!  I’m definitely going to have the endoscopy too.  Thank you

So my colonsopacy came back clear but they didn’t look at the small bowel.  Some inflammation and mucous was detected.  So I went private.  The pains got worse and so did the diarrhoea.  Lost one stone in weight.  They did an MRI which showed inflammation of the colon.  They also noticed that my doctors hadn’t checked that my stool sample also showed high inflammation.  They have said it it mild colitis which is basically inflammation.  He agrees with me that it must of been the chicken I had but he can’t understand why it lasted almost 16 weeks.  I am feeling so much better now although my stomach is not quite yet the same 💩

Hi again,  It does sound like Colitus a little bit and it could well be down to the chicken that may have highlighted your problem.  I have ulcerative colitus, was on heave medication to get it under control as I left it so long before getting help. It took 4 years to get it totally under control but know I am only taking Pentasa and for the last 2 years and touching wood as a type this, everything is good for me, although I do have to watch what I eat and not get  totally stressed over anything.  If  you do have Colitus, you will have to go on medication to settle you and you will have to take medication for the rest of your life.  Do not think that you are over it when you are having a good time because it can flare up for no reason at all and it will drag you down a bit but by doing a food diary, chilling out when you get stressed, laying off the food that dislikes you now, you should maintain a good way of life, but please don't think you are cured when you are feeling better like some people on this site because there is no cure and it can come back to bite you on the bum (pardon the joke but that is the only way I have found to deal with it).  Hopefully now you have a diagnosis you will feel a little happier and life can carry on for you, and it will, like it has for me.  Good luck and let me know how you get on and if you want any other reassurance, I am hear for you.  Life is on the up for you.  x

Hi Maureen, thanks for your message.  My biopsy results didn’t show Chron’s or Colitus neither did the MRI or the Colonoscopy.  The Consultant said it all looked healthy.  I’m praying it’s not either as I’m pretty sure the Private Clinic have investigated throughly.

Oh sorry, I thought you said your Private Consultant said  ' They have said it it mild colitis which is basically inflammation',   hence my reply to you.  Sorry.
