Endoscopy Experiences

Hi everyone I am due to ha an upper Endoscopy in 3 weeks time and would like some reviews on experiences to calm my nerves. I am having sedation due to being scared but reading some of the reviews about being aware and struggling against it has made me worse, can anyone who has recently had this done put me at rest, I am 66 and already on 2 1/2 mg of diazepam a day. Thank you 🤔

There are several posts on this subject; if you click on the yellow list on the R of screen they will all come up. Some are more reassuring than others. I can truthfully say that I would happily go again on the strength of my past experience. I opted for no sedation as have several others. Have a read. Good luck.

PS Happy to answer any questions about my experience if it's any help.

Hi Betty I am just receiving notifications now as they have gone into my spam, I have been and done it without sedation, can’t believe I did but have come back on to thank you for your kind words, I read some horrific things on here which really scared me but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I thought, only took a few minutes and I was fine! hope you are well 😃

Lynn, really glad it went well for you and if my words were any encouragement then that pleases me, too.

It helped a great deal, pays you not to believe all the scary posts but I guess everyone is different, I will always be here to help anyone as worried as what I was! And I would say I worried far too much, thanks again 😀

      Hi Lynn

I had an endoscopy last month and like you I was terrified. I opted for sedation and everything was fine - it was nowhere near as bad as I'd imagined. If I had to go again I would not be at all worried although would have sedation again. Please don't worry - you will be fine.

You really will be fine - I'm a similar age to you and the world's worst worrier! Like you I looked at all the posts and that made me worse so please trust me - it absolutely wasnt too bad and only takes a few minutes.  Don't spend the time leading up to it worrying- I did and then afterwards thought what a waste of time as I'd been worrying about nothing! 🙂

Thanks Liz, were you sedated? If so were you asleep through it and could you not remember anything? 🤔

Hi Lynn-the sedation didn't put me to sleep but I was totally relaxed and can't really remember much. You really will be fine - please don't worry! Xxx

Hi Lynn, I had a upper Endoscopy in May. I am 17 years old and was absolutely terrified of having one. But I can honestly say it wasn't as bad as I thought. I had throat spray and sedation. Make sure you get the throat spray as your throat goes so numb and you can't  feel the tube in your throat at all. With the sedation I had 3mg of Midazolam and I can barely remember anything. As soon as the sedation went into my IV i don't remember much. I don't remember the tube going in or it even being in my throat. The only thing I did remember was occasionally gagging. I know that sounds scary but honestly you do not care as your sedated. Hope this eases your worries.

It should be fine just ask for throat spray and a lot of sedation lol even if you do gag you won't really feel any worry or anything. Hope it goes well smile
