Enterocele and rectocele repair

Hi all

Well it looks like my op is next Fri 18th Nov. Its something I have been putting off as I had a cystocele repair and hysterectomy so i kind of know what recovery will be like etc.

A few questions which i would like some advice on please.

Will I be having any sort of enenma? I do not take well to morphine or tramadol . So will ibruprofen and paracetamol be enough for the pain.?

Will I have to have a catheter and all that horrible packing?

I have also been told that it can change the shape of your vagina making intercourse painful!! Well its practically non existent now , will this improve over time.? I remember after my cystocele repair it was at least 6 months before it was comfortable. I am having visions that at 49 I will never be able to have intercourse again sad

Many thanks to any advice.

Hi Kar67! I have my rectocele surgery next 5th Dec and I am a bit worried also. Like you I had already a cistocele surgery.

I had the pack also for one day and it was not painful for me. I didn't have pain eather, only the first 2 days. I also heard a lot of stories about painful sex but it has not been my case. Just a bit bothering at the beginning but now one year after my first op everything is fine.

I hope the rectocele op goes as well as the first one.

Hope the best for you! Please keep us updated!

By the way I have been told to have an enema at home the day before the surgery.

    Hugs!!!!

    Hi Kar67

it depends on your surgeon  think. I had surgery as Frimley park Hospital. In April for a recto else and on Nov 1st for anterior repair. Both were done by local anaesthetic. In at 7am and home by 3pm. Given Naproxen and paracetamol to take for 10 days. I had no packing or catheter. Given lots of info and advice in discharge and they emphasis on it being major surgery. Take moviol and saw GP after 2 days after rectocele because painful to pass stools and given suppositories to use at night and they really helped. Good luck. As matron says rest up and listen to your body

The packing isn't that bad. I had to have in the ER. Just a little uncomfortable when removed

I had it after my bladder repair and hysterectomy . Didn't like it or the catheter but I know it's short lived x

    Hi Kar,

That's good your having your surgery next Friday. I had a A&P last March and did not need an enenma. I used codeine of some sort for a few days and then paracetemol. Only had catheter and packing for 1st 24 hours. I was fairly swollen for a number of weeks and was nearer the 13 weeks before feeling like things were a bit normal.

As one of the other ladies said stitches go right down to perineum at the back; I found that repair more uncomfortable as stitches were fairly tight and a bit nippy. However it doesn't last forever and eventually it all settles down.

It did take a bit longer to attempt full penetrative sex this time as I found that posterior repair took longer to heal than front repair. When you are ready to attempt that then use plenty gel.

Hope all goes well and remember to rest plenty and don't be in too big a hurry to get back to normal. Winter is a great time to be off resting as weather not so good so not missing much. Snuggle up by the fire and enjoy your favourite movies or books. By the time Spring comes you will be well on the way to recovery and able to get out and about in the sun.

    Take care x?

Thank you my love for your positive words. After a miserable day today I am thinking that actually some duvet days during the winter months will be good. Have ordered some new books so raring to go now. Fingers crossed that a bed on the day will be available x

Last time I had repair, their must have been about six of us and despite more than a few emergencies we all still got taken, two of us were told we might be sent home, fortunately surgeon managed to get us all done.

Anyhow on that note if anyone is sent home I would assume it would be a small number in comparison to those that actually go ahead.

So keeping my fingers crossed that you will be among the higher number who will get the go ahead!

      X☺
