Esmya and heavy bleeding

Hi there,
I was wondering if there is someone out there with similar problem as me....diagnosed with a large submucosal fibroid (9cm), gyno prescribed Esmya. I was happy to try it as just started a new job so surgery is not ideal(not that this was even discussed by the doctor). Started to take it on 18th December 17, then started to spot on the 1th January- only in the afternoon with nothing during am and early afternoon. Then the heavy period started on 6th January and hasn't stopped yet! 11 days of on/off bleeding, completely unpredictable, sudden flooding followed by dry up afternoon only to start bleeding again. It's causing me an anxiety now as don't want to have an embarrassing accident at work and can't go home either! I contacted gyno who said keep taking Tranexamic Acid (provides maybe an afternoon relief but heavy period returns). Spoke to a gp today after another bounce of flooding and large clots, she told me not to take the Tranexamic Acid anymore (I took it for whole week rather than just 4days). Anyone else having trouble stopping their bleeding while on Esmya? I am also anemic. Anyone with erratic bleeding patern? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I am loosing my strength. Thank you.

Hi Tawana
Thank you for your reply. I am also sorry you had to go through a tough time! It's awful. I think Fibristal is Esmya...just different trading names for the same thing
I was really hoping that it would give me a break from the bleeding but it looks like it won't work for me. I am just not sure how long I need to 'wait&see'. Would you mind sharing where I could talk to women in similar situation, please? I feel very isolated with this, my new work is full of men and my boyfriend is very supportive but bless him he can never understand... I hope you will be successful and get rid of your troubles! Thank you so much for replying and hugs back from Scotland

My fibroids are on my uterus wall and caused so much havoc in my life too so I can relate what your going through it’s very hard . Another option I was told I had if the bleeding didn’t stop was called ablasiin . It’s easier to do and less recovery time then a full hystorectomy so they could burn off some of my uterus size by inserting a balloon I guess to shrink the size of my uterus which at the time was 12 cms . That’s all due to the hormones changing and excessive bleeding they said . Thank god them pills worked for me cause it is very hard to go through excessive bleeding every day , every hour gushing blood and clots . Sometimes I would feel like I was at my wits end too from it so I hear ya . How I dealt with a lot of it while it was going on was I talked to every woman that would give me the time of day , at grocery stores , forums , anywhere I could cause men simply don’t understand how hard emotionally it is on us woman . These forums here are great and many woman talk about fibroids and bleeding here so try to scroll through and search for fibroids , there are many topics here on them as lots of us woman have gone through this nightmare sadly . Also , follow up with the Gynocoligist if ya can and see what they have for other options to get this bleeding under control . Their are many treatments for it so don’t give up hope ok ? It’s just finding the right treatment plan that your body will work on as we’re all different, but kinda dealing with the same issues . I usually look through these forums a lot and try to help anyone I can here cause I know what it’s like and we all need each other’s support .
My doctor also recommended me to start eating chopped spinach and more greens as I didn’t have them as part of my diet ever but now I eat them all the time . I also drink lots of water daily to flush the system out and also I take 1 baby aspirin a day , it thins the blood and helps breakdown the clots a bit but , check with your doctor first before trying any of the stuff I am doing because different things work for different woman ya know ?
Best wishes to you and keep chatting in these forums too cause it helps to talk to other people’ instead of building it up inside and feeling overwhelmed . We all will get through this hormone change and one day feel back to normal again .
Hugs from Canada .

I have now joined a Facebook page with relevant topic, already had a few replies. Today was a bit better, bleeding was much lighter for most of my working day. I just feel very tired now and breathless. That's due to the blood loss so I am not too worried. I have started to take apple cider vinegar each morning and will increase the dose to twice a day. Also heard of blackstrap molasses to try, so I will! After all, these are natural remedies and after taking hormones should not do me more harm (if any). Hoping something will start working soon as my energy levels are now fast depleting.. Thank you so much for your kind reply, I was really feeling very low but I have a little hope now again and yes, I am not alone in this!
Hugs from Scotland x

I bled for a few weeks but eventually it stopped. My consultant said it often gets worse when you start on these medications before it gets better but stick with it and see what happens. It's just your body adjusting to all the hormones although it's horrible! Hope it all works out for you x

Was your bleeding erratic or was it gradually getting lighter as the days went on? I go from light to heavy to nothing to heavy to light...it's such a unpredictable pattern. Also, did the medication shrink your fibroid? Or at least stopped it from growing? Many thanks

It was very erratic! Id have none for hours then lots and then some spotting then lots again. The periods of time with none started to get longer and longer though one day it just stopped. Sorry I didn't realise it was esmya you are on, I've had the decapeptyl injections which is a similar thing. My fibroid has shrunk significantly with them. It is much less than half the size now. I haven't got my period back yet so not sure how its gonna be. My fibroid was large at 12cm. It is also submucosal and I'm due to get a hysteroscopy soon. I'm not sure if it will be removed at this time though, depends on how embedded it is x

I am so relieved to hear someone had similar experience, thank you so much. I mean I am sorry to hear that you had to go through that as I know how it feels! But it sort of gave me a new hope that this is just my body adjusting to all those new hormones and one day the period will be gone. It's been much lighter today so I'm praying it will stay this way until it stops completely. I could manage at work fine unlike the other heavy days. I will stick with the esmya and hopefully it will shrink the fibroid. If I could get it down to 4cm or less, I might be able to have a hysteroctomic resection done and be back to work within 72hours!! That would be awesome as I just started a new job and the last thing I want is to be taking time off for a surgery... Is this the procedure you are having done? Good luck and I hope all goes great and they will free you of all the symptoms!! x

Sorry to hear this. Esmya can completely stop periods. I know we are all different and in your case you have a submucosal fibroid of 9cm, they are the type to cause heavy bleeding. If it can be shrunk so it's small enough to remove hysteroscopically then that would be the aim of the consultant I expect. Maybe if you can stick with the esmya and if it works it can reduce the bleeding and in some cases stop it, and also help to reduce the size of the fibroid. Hopefully you can stick with it. If this is what the Dr suggests. In the meantime you need iron supplements by the sound of it. Hope you have tolerance to the ones the Drs prescribe. I found solgar to be gentle on the stomach with no side effects and in my case increased my iron and hgb over a 3 month period. That is my experience though.

Thank you for your comment
It all got too much last night and I cried and cried. I felt as if life is just playing a cruel joke on me- I have also been diagnosed with Ankolysing spondylitis (form of arthritis), colitis, ITP (blood doesn't clot well) and breathing problems....and now fibroid. I am only 33 years old.... But then I remembered the many people who are so much worse off than me and I felt ashamed. I can do this. I need to give Esmya time to work! I can't have surgery for the next at least 6 months as I am under probationary period till July so there is really nothing else I can do. I am trying some natural remedies too, taking Apple Coder Vinegar and magnesium. I have iron prescribed from doctor but will discussed if the dose could be increased a bit to boost my levels. Need to stay positive. (Better said than done). But I am not a quitter so I will fight this and win!!
Thank you for messaging me as it always help to hear a kind word. Much appreciated

Hi Marie, it is quite understandable that you will go into a bit of a crisis mode when you get news of health issues. I think most of us do and then we come to terms with what is happening and how we can help ourselves. It sounds like you are already doing that with the remedies you have researched. Sorry to hear about your other diagnoses. There is always someone worse off and it helps to realise that. It still doesn't diminish how you feel about your own situation though and you are still important as well. You shouldn't feel ashamed at all. Good luck with your journey and coming through the other side and if necessary with a plan of managing. When you know what is happening and what you are dealing with, it helps. Take care.

Thanks Shell for your message. Yes I had a liver test done before starting it. My Doc suggested me to do it every 2 weeks for the next 3 months. Let's see how it turns! Fingers crossed. I just hope Esmya works for me. As I already had a myomectomy before, a second one will be more complicated for me. Life is such a roller-coaster. Thanks again for your reply and good wishes.
