Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.
Thank you

Yes I wore surgical stockings for the first few days as advised by the hospital. You can abandon them when you become more active! I was advised to walk around the house little and often in the first few days to help reduce the risk of clots.
Good luck tomorrow. Thinking of you.

I was just wondering - I am having a laparoscopic myomectomy. Can anyone offer me any gems of advice? Things I should know? Top tips for healing/recovery? Things you wish you had known?
Thank you for any help! xx

Get up and walk about as soon as you can. My consultant recommended 80% activity and 20% rest although I think this is probably hard to achieve in reality. I think you will be surprised at how well you feel just a few days after surgery, pain only lasts a few days and is manageable with medication. I would recommend that you take comfy clothes or come home in your pyjamas with a cushion to put over your belly when you get into the car
I have discovered the joys of internet grocery shopping during my recovery - very helpful!
Good luck x

My myomectomy was supposed to be yesterday, but I had cancelled it as I was absolutely terrified, I'm so impressed by how brave everyone is.
It turns out that I wouldn't have been able to have the op anyway as I have picked up a kidney infection, my gyno thinks that it's because the fibroid is so big it's getting in the way of the bladder. More scans, more test and then a rescheduling of the operation for as soon as possible.
I was too scared to go to the doctor as I thought the pain was as a result of the fibroid not a kidney infection so I really let it grab hold before getting the first of 3 courses of antibiotics.

I know it's easy for me to say now, but don't be scared, it's not as bad as you imagine and it's soon over. Then you can get on with living again without having this thing hanging over you all the time. The docs are carrying out this procedure every day of their working lives - it's pretty routine for them.
My fibroid was putting pressure on my bladder and I cannot believe the difference now, I can sleep through the night without having to get up to the toilet - bliss!

Will hopefully be able to get it rescheduled soon.
How long we're you in hospital for? Thank you xx

I know exactly what you mean about worrying about the risks, I read all sorts which is helpful, but can also scare you a bit. I have a tendency to think things over too much, I'd like to be one of these people who just bite the bullet and get on with it, but I think most people worry, it's only natural.
I was only in hospital for one night. In spite of the huge size of my fibroid ( I had put of having anything done for quite a while!) the surgeon managed to remove it laparoscopically and I was discharged from hospital late afternoon the following day after surgery. I think if you have open surgery you are usually in 4-5 days. When I got home and weighed myself I had lost 10 pounds - not the best method of weigh loss, but every cloud has a silver lining as they say!
I am now enjoying the chance to rest and recuperate as usually I am on the go all the time!

Did you find any problems with bloating/excess gas/shoulder pain? I've read a few stories online to this effect and am wondering if I should be getting in the peppermint tea in anticipation!

Yes I did get those problems and I did use peppermint tea! I found that moving around helped to shift the excess gas and although it was uncomfortable it only lasted about 48 hours. As I am sure you know it only happens with laparoscopic surgery because they pump your abdomen with carbon dioxide. It is probably the thing that gives you the most discomfort, but it is manageable and it soon passes.

I just wanted to update you all ............ Its now been three weeks since I finished the esmya. The first ten days or so were good and I actually felt better. Unfortunately that was short lived as I started having cramping pains, back ache and bleeding. I also saw my doctor and had a scan which showed no shrinkage of the fibroids at all. I have to say I am very disappointed. We have decided to go ahead with a hysterectomy at the end of the month. I am a little nervous but also feel like I need to get this over and done with so that I can move on.
This forum and all your messages of support have been fantastic.. Good luck to you all. x

It has been really interesting reading the experiences of Esmya. I was prescribed it but put off taking it as it was too close to my holiday (I didn't know what the side effects would be) and then I had a date for op (hysterectomy) which would have meant the Esmya wouldn't have had much time to kick in anyway.
Anni27 - you have decided on a hysterectomy? I have an apt tomorrow to see another consultant. My hysterectomy was booked for 23rd April but the week before, they telephoned to say it was cancelled. I heard no more until 27th May and have just heard I have another apt with another consultant in a different hospital! I am hoping he will have a different take on the situation - could be just wishful thinking on my part! My options were a hysterectomy or uterine artery emboliosation - I still don't really know what to do. My hysterectomy would be abdominal that much I do know. I know I have to do something but am so terrified.
