Esmya Tablets Fibroid Treatment

Posted , 151 users are following.

Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

@ Sue100, I am so glad to hear that your hysterectomy was a great success. What a relief it must be for you to have put this part of your life behind you. Wishing you the best of health.

    Hi Sue

Glad to hear that you are on the mend. I am convinced that my fibroid has grown too in spite of esmya, but my gynaecologist did say that it works better for some types of fibroids than others. I am a little nervous that when I see him next week, he will say that laparoscopic surgery is no longer an option, especially as I have paid privately in an effort to avoid abdominal surgery, but that's life! My op is due at the end of next week. I will let you know what happens!! x

    Hi Sue

So glad to hear you are on the mend. I had my ab hysterectomy booked for 23rd April but it was cancelled - I have not heard anything since which is a bit strange - so am still waiting! Have you lost weight after the fibroid was removed? Any information on yourexperience and advice would appreciated as I really don't know what to expect. x

Hi Ladies, just an update, I had an appointment come through to go into hospital tomorrow to be put out and have camera and biopsy done, Im so glad as yesterday I tried putting tampax in and couldn't and found what I presume to be the fibroid has prolapsed through my cervix, they did say it was trying to push through and now it obviously has! Ive been on Esmya for a couple of weeks and started proper period 2 days ago which was disappointing, Im sick of the whole thing! Im going to Italy for 2 weeks in a month and now Im getting worried that I wont be able to go? Has anyone had a prolapsed fibroid? Just so glad I had the appointment through so quickly. Hope you are all good xx

Hi All, this is my first posting although i have been following your discussion since esmya was suggested as a treatment to me. I am 4 days into my 2nd month of esmya to shrink 6 fibroids and have developed what I initially thought was an allergy on my face and neck. Feels more sore than itchy though now and wondered if this was a side effect. Anyone else had a similar experience and does it disappear or stay until you stop taking the pills after 3 months? As well as feeling overwhelmingly tired I now feel very unattractive too :-(

Hi Mary233, I'm so sorry you're going through this on top of everything else. I would definitely see a physician whom I'm sure could give you a topical to clear up your rash. It states in the product leaflet that acne is a common side effect if you feel that's what it is. I haven't had any adverse reactions from Esmya at all other than feeling tired in the beginning and some light spotting in the 2nd month. I am one week into my 3rd month and I feel great. Hang in there.

    Hi Mary233,

Now you mention it I did have an eczema like rash on my arms for a few weeks but didn't particularly attribute it to esmya, maybe it was connected?

I am now four days post myomectomy. The surgery took 6 hours but somehow my gynaecologist managed to remove it laparoscopically in spite of the fact that it was the size of a 26 week pregnancy!!!! I can recommend this guy if anyone lives in the north of England and is looking to pay privately for minimally invasive surgery.

I am feeling fairly comfortable now, flat but bruised belly. The worst symptom is that due to blood loss at time of surgery, I am anaemic and feel very tired, but I am taking iron tablets so that should sort it out in a couple of weeks I hope.

    Good luck to everyone!

Congrats @deanne2 for a successful myomectomy. I saw this post by searching about Esmya Tablets on line. All your stories are touching and at the same time encouraging. I am to start taking Esmya tablets from day 3 of my period which is likely to start between 5th and 6th June.

I am 33 years being married for 2years without a child. We have been trying for a child without success and my period was very irregular. I can go 2months without a period. So we decided to go see a gyn. Last year Dec that was when I was told I had fibroid. I was placed on the Enanton depot dual injection for 3months from December till February. At the end of the injection my gyn. Forgot to send my papers to the surgery unit it took lots of calls from us before she sent it after 2months of the injection. I did x-ray few weeks ago and The x -ray shows that I have 2 fibroid. One as big like a 12weeks of pregnancy. It was the other one they have been treating. The big one they did not see with ultrasound. I am starting treatment all over again with Esyma tablet till the operation. The operation will be after summer. I am keeping my finger cross and hoping Esyma will reduce it. I am sending positive energy to everyone.

(By the way i live in Sweden.)

    Hi All

Bear with me it is not war and peace I promise!

Why did I not find this site last summer, I would like to share my story and hope it helps somebody with

the emotional turmoil I have been through. I began on ferrous sulphate 2 years ago after going to give

blood and finding out I was anaemic. A year passed back for routine blood test and was advised to have a coil to help with 10 day bleeding every month, looking back in the space of 2 years my period had

increased from 5 to 10 days but I just got on with it. I agreed last summer to have the coil fitted, I had

tried this after my 3rd child and had to have it surgically removed so I was not keen but thought it is a

different type of coil and if it helps I would give it a go. I would like to say I am lucky as I do not have

period pain each month, and was sterilised about 1995 after the disaster of the first coil.

My GP sent me for a routine ultrasound and I was found to have a sub mucous fibroid and an ovarian cyst, apparanetly a "complex case" I felt relieved at least I knew why I was bleeding heavily. I went in for the

coil to be fitted and had an internal camera plus a sample of womb taken away. My womb was healthy

as was my cyst, which I have to say the consultant never even mentioned on the first visit he was more

focussed on the bleeding. The coil came away with a huge clot, and after 10 weeks of solid bleeding I

was fed up. He then dropped the bomb, hysterectomy, I was only 44 and was told I would need both of

my ovaries out and my womb a surgical hysterectomy which would force me into the menopause

overnight. This was just about the time of beginning my third year of my degree. I have never felt so shocked and emotional, I thought mentally why am I so bothered it is not like you want a family now, my

children are now late teens and 22 I still cannot rationalise this, and it is probably the closest I have

come to having a mental breakdown, those words meant nothing to him he said it in a manner like

having a tooth removed. All I wanted was to talk to somebody who had been through the same, my

mother has passed away and my sisters are younger, I felt very alone. I then suggested the abalation, he reluctantly agreed, this also failed as my womb was now 16-18 weeks, he came straight to my bedside and wanted to book me in the following week for the big H, everything to be removed.

I decided I wanted a second opinion, this consultant could not have been more different, yes I had to pay

for this consultation but it was worth every penny to me. He said he could put me in touch with a

fibroid specialist and the possibility of keeping one ovary which I could come to terms with. I had this

second opinion in April 2013, and was recommended esmya for 3 months pre surgery, then came the

next battle. My GP had not wanted to refer me for the second opinion in the first case, suggesting my

blood could indicate I was heading towards the menopause, I knew I wasnt, they also knew my

consultant had recommended esmya in January 2013, and they then refused me the drug, saying this

was not in their formulary for primary care, I came back with is HRT in your formulary, within days of a

complaint letter I received the prescription through the post. I would be a long term medication,

which I did not want to take preferring to go the natural way. My bloods have changed again and the

nurse at the surgery said it depends on the day of the cycle to the hormone levels, and I am still not

    on the menopause.

I am on day 12 of my esmya, and in the last few days my tummy feels a little harder and heavier, I

gather this is due to the muscles contracting, I do not feel nausea, I do feel tired but I have just

finished my degree and could put that down to the relief of finally completing it. I have noticed more

hair loss in the shower, and a slighty increased appetite, but other than that fine, I am secretly hoping

to miss the next period, and am due for surgery 5th July to remove left ovary and have a resection done.

I hope this helps somebody, dont be fobbed off follow your gut and have the confidence to challenge

at the end of the day it is your body and you have to live with it. I am scared and hope not to eventually

have the big H, but at least I have tried everything before that option, I realise it is a very personal

matter, and I am getting fed up with planning my life around my period, but it still seems the better option for me right now.

Reading all your messages has helped, and it makes you feel better thank you girls.

Hi Angel4life - thanks for your best wishes.

I agree with valerie89, it is best to get a second opinion and read as much as possible about myomectomy v hysterectomy so that you can make an informed decision. Doctors have different opinions like any professional and within the NHS, the most cost effective solution for someone who has completed their family is often still seen as a hysterectomy. What they don't tend to tell you about is the potential long term effects of a hysterectomy such as prolapse and incontinence. It is a very personal decision and often there is no definitive right and wrong, but make sure you go informed would be my advice.

I am now 11 days post myomectomy and am feeling stronger. I can potter around without any great difficulty but I need to build up my stamina as I am still anaemic - it takes a few weeks to build up the iron levels.

To everyone about to undergo surgery, I wish you good luck. You will feel so much better when it is over.

    Hi all,

Thank you all for your immense support and important information about Esmya. I am 26 yrs old suffering from focal AdenomyosisĀ  on the posterior wall of my uterus (7.5 x 5.5 cm) diagnosed in Dec 2012 in India. I did my MRIĀ  at a radiologist in February in Germany(I live in Germany) who alsoĀ  diagnosed me with Adenomyosis.Ā  But my Gynaecologist in Germany does not agree to it. He thinks I have a big fibroid which cannot be removed by any operation but has to be cured/ reduced with conservative medicinal treatment (Esmya for 3 months).Ā  There is a very thin line between the two for a perfect diagnosis.Ā

I delayed my prescription of Esmya and tried for IUI Infertility treatment for 3 months in India to get pregnant but it failed. According to the Indian docs...pregnancy or hysterectomy (not for me) is the only solution for Adenomyosis.Ā  I also got done my HSG and my fallopian tubes are perfectly fine.

I had irregular menses when I got them for theĀ  first time (I was 13yrs old). But they got regulated with some medications in 6 months.Ā  Since then I have never missed my periods...hv a 5/7 day bleeding. My ovulation is great. Ovaries are intact...but I nearly die during my periods.Ā  I bleed heavily with huge clots, have abdominal cramps very similar to last stage of labour for consecutive 2/3 days....heavy bloating feeling and I cannot eat anything during 3 days...absolutely nothing.Ā  Due to the blood loss and no food intake during menses, I can barely walk in those days and I am anaemic for the rest of the month.

I don't know , how many of you have intense symptoms of dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia but I suffer a lot and pain killer tablets don't help me much.

Unfortunately I have been caught up with the doctors who do not agree to one diagnosis and the treatment for Adenomyosis and fibroids is completely opposite if you still have to complete your family. I decided to take a break from all this and give 3 months rest to my uterus by opting for ESMYA. I am already one month through. The side effects are weakness,Ā  body ache, severe headache mostly early mornings and light headache through out the day and acne (horrible as I never suffered from it before).

There are no clinical tests of Esmya for Adenomyosis...and I hv no clue if the tablets will increase or decrease the size of my swollen uterus.Ā  I want to know if any of you have diagnostic differences?Ā  I am in my child bearing age and want to have babies ...all these harmones are driving me crazy. I was always having a flat tummy but now it shows a small bump. I am putting on weight since the harmones are on. So really don't know how Esmya is working for me. Can someone elaborate on the post Esmya menses....I hopeĀ  atleast the pain decreases... wish you all good luck.

Ps: For fibroids ...other than hysterectomy and Embolisation there is one more very effective treatment called MRGFUS. Not an invasive procedure as they burn fibroids with ultra sonographic rays.. works great but not many cases for infertility, so cannot opt for it now but will do it after I complete my family. Sometimes partly covered by insurance as well. Costs are around 5000-6500 Euros.

    Hi all,

I seem to remember that a couple of people were due to have their myomectomies performed tomorrow so I just wanted to send my best wishes to you. It will soon be done and you will be glad I'm sure.

I am now almost three weeks post myomectomy. Feeling stronger and more like my old self. Only real problem is post operative anaemia which means I can't exert myself much yet but otherwise I feel pretty good. Doc has prescribed more iron tablets and rest!

Will look forward to hearing that you are feeling better.
