Esmya Tablets Fibroid Treatment

Posted , 151 users are following.

Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

JacJac- I am so sorry to hear that. fingers crossed for your op in August.

Dani - thank you for your post.

Well finally I have seen a different consultant in a different county, who specialises in esmya and fibroid treatments. I am now about to start my 6th Month of Esmya (although the new consultant has now explained to me that the specialist who started me on Esmya obviously does not understand how it works as it should be taken no longer then 3 months) The consultant was brilliant, he did say 6 months on Esmya should not cause any issues so I am to continue the rest of this course. By the end of the treatment I should be going for a UAE. I was given the choice of either this or a myomectomy, however was also asked if I wanted to partake in a study, but this would mean the computer would decide for me which operation I have. I have been through so much for the last 5 years, and all the treatments etc have not worked so I thought the study would be the best option as scans and check up are carried on for years after the operation and if any issues arise they will be sorted ASAP.

I am terrified if I am honest about having a UAE, but after reading what dani posted I feel a little more at ease. But I know every patient is different and other medical conditions can become a factor when it comes to post op recovery. But fingers crossed

    Hi Jacjac,

If you are anxious that is entirely understandable and after the op it will all resolve. I had a similar experience in that when I had an NHS scan they said I had a pedunculated fibroid, but the surgeon who removed it said that it wasn't, hence the reason the rather expensive esmya was a waste of time!

I am about 8 weeks post op now and it is all forgotten. You will get there too.

    Good Luck with your op.

Hi Everyone, It's been quite a while since I posted last but I wanted to let you know what's been going on. I finally had LSH!!! Laporoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy.....and it was AWESOME! I flew to the US for the summer and my Doctor was able to get me right in. I had my surgery on the 12th, 6 days ago, and I am feeling like a new woman. I highly recommend this procedure and and I feel so fortunate to have been able to have it done. I arrived at the hospital at 6:30 am, went into surgery at 8 am, was in recovery by 9:45, and headed home by 12:15! Pain was minimal and I only had to take the prescribed pain killers a few times the first day and once the second day. I had my fallopian tubes and uterus removed along with a 290 gram fibroid! I opted to keep my ovaries since they are nice and healthy and I didn't want to go through the hormone therapy routine and, of course, my cervix. I have been out and about many times since surgery and although I tire easily, I am feeling wonderful. I can't beleive my nightmarish periods are finally over and I can go out without worries. White pants here I come! Three small incisions including one in my belly button is all that I have to show for my new lease on life. AMEN!

My last message was shortly after 28 June 2013, I am on around day 60 of my taking my Esmya and

have had no period. With this lovely weather this has been a blessing, I think my belly has slightly reduced now. Initially I did feel fatigued and still ocassionally do, and have had some hair loss, my GP said this is due to the anaemia previously being low, I am not so sure, and I am getting hot, this could be weather, loss of one ovary or side effect of Esmya again not sure. My cholesterol was slightly raised also, this apparantely is a side effect of Esmya. I Reading lots of books at the minute just in case my myomectomy does not work in September and I have to have hysterectomy, The New Alternatives to HRT, around foods which help and

really goes into depth about the body etc.............and the changes, really interesting.

Hi all, I've been very interested with the discussions & reading everyone's experiences of taking Esmya.

I underwent a TCRE operation in June to remove my fibroids, however there were complications & they were not able to remove the fibroid completely as they perforated my uterus during the operation & also bruised my bowel resulting in supporting sutures to be put in for support.

Needless to say my symptoms have not eased so my consultant decided to put me on Esmya in an attempt to shrink the remaining fibroids (I had 2 very large ones approx 8-10cm) and reduce the bleeding.

I am in my first week of treatment and my bleeding is getting worse.

Prior to my operation I was bleeding constantly for 2 months. Post op the bleeding reduced slightly but did not stop, however since starting Esmya this has increased again, I am using the highest absorbency sanitary towels I can get but still having to change every hour. This is seriously affecting my quality of life now and it's getting me down to say the least.

I'm quite worried about this and was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Hi, I haven't used Esmya, but had fybroids about 7 years ago and had uterine embolization to shrink them which worked. It's an injection through keyhole surgery into the artery leading to the fybroid which blocks the blood supply. It was only a short operation with no side affects. Not sure if it's still available but would assume it is. I think they may be back though and am going for a scan on Monday to check. Either that or I'm just fat! I can feel a diet coming on.

Hi all, I've been taking Esmya for 6 weeks now. No period since my first one which was light anyway and I think my fibroid is shrinking! It definitely feels smaller. I'm due to go back to see my consultant this month and so I'll see what he has to say... Side effects that I've had so far have been tiredness (although I've been exercising. to try and combat this) and feeling dizzy and sick. Happy to put up with these though if it means the esmya is working. I'll let you know how I get on when I see the doc!

    Hi again Ladies!

Finally my op is tomorrow... Still nervous but hoping I will go through with it this time as it really has been dragging on!

A few weeks ago I went back to Glasgow and a friend of mine took me on a firewalk to try to get over my fear!

Here is the story of how it all went!

Good morning ladies, I had posted link to my friends blog where I wrote about some of the things that have been dealing with as a result of the fibroids, but they haven't authorised my comment as yet

My op was yesterday and the doctor has assures me it couldn't have gone better.

Still in hospital and happy to stay as long as they think.

Most importantly, despite the post op discomfort, I definitely feel like it's made a massive change on how the whole area feels and am looking forward to being able to get back to the gym and get my life back!

Thanks so much to everyone on here for their support and sharing their stories, it's really helped.

    Hi ladies,

I haven't been here for a while. I am now six weeks post op TAH/BSO. Unfortunately for me the esmya did not work at all. I had a lot of side effects whilst on it and within ten days of the course finishing it was back to pain and bleeding. I had a complicated surgery and recovery has been slow but each day gets a little better and I am looking forward to getting on with life without pain!

A big thank you to all for the support and good luck!

    Hi all!

Four and half weeks after op. Esmya made my fibroid shrink from size of a grape fruit to the size of a tennis ball. The shrinking took place the last couple of weeks. Was bleading one and a half month while taking Esmya. Horrible! Took tranexamacid to cope. So hang in there essjaybee! I know how you are feeling right now!

Because of the shrinking I could have a myomectomy instead of a hysterectomy. It was decided dukning surgery so I was so relieved when I woke up to hear that I still had my uterus in place. But then I had major bleading and had to stay in hospital for five days and had several blood transfusions.

The first couple of weeks back home were hard. Had my first period after three weeks. Major bleeding. Had to take tranexamacid again. Now much better even if the bleading does not want to stop completely.

    Good luck to you all!
