Posted , 151 users are following.

Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

Hi, I have been taking esmya for about 10 weeks now and I'm happy to report that I've hardly experinced any side effects. Instead, I'm not quite sure if its my illusion but I think my libido even improved.

6 September had myomectomy, two weeks prior my Esmya had finished and I had no period. The 5

September I began to bleed and took this as my periods, I am still bleeding, however my consultant said

it has been a success. I know this is early days, but do feel a little disappointed as this is day 10 now again

    of bleeding.

My hot flushes have stopped, so this must have been a side effect for me, and hair loss. Ladies who have

received Esmya without an issue from their GP have done really well, I had a fight to get mine, on top of the

    distress of facing more surgery.

I had a Transcervical Resection of the Fibroid early in June, there were complications resulting in an incision and surgeons were unable to remove all of the fibroid.

I was prescribed Esmya to reduce the remaining fibroid and relieve symptoms. I am now on Week 6 of my 12 week course and can honestly say I am not completely happy with everything although I am told the remaining fibroid has shrunk but his, in turn, has revealed other fibroids in the muscle itself which they had not seen previously due to the size of my other fibroids in the uterus lining.

I now also have a mirena coil fitted which is designed to reduce the 'new' fibroids and hopefully prevent the need for a hysterectomy.

As for 'side effects' from Esmya....as previously stated I was still getting intermittent heavy bleeding, this has not improved. I have also been getting a very thick, mucus discharge (foul smelling) which has been checked for infection and come back negative so must be another side effect of the Esmya.

I am considering stopping the Esmya altogether as I am fed up with having to wear sanitary towels day in day out.

I can sympathise, I had one day of a thick plug of mucous loss which I had never had before, I have had the mirena coil prior to these surgeries, unfortunately I was 2 days short of a full month. It came away I believe

it was due to the pressure inside cervix, I lost a huge blood clot with it, something very big which scared me.

Persist with the Esmya, what have you got to loose, I had 10 weeks last summer of constant bleeding and it really gets you down, as it impacts on all areas of life. Your body is taking on a lot of changes and it may justbe for you it takes a little longer. Your decision, I know........................

    Hi

I've been on Esmya for 9 days now and apart from some nausea and dizziness my main side effect is heavy bleeding sad My Gynae did warn me about this, hopefully it will settle down soon otherwise I'll need another blood transfusion! She also warned me not to get pregnant on this medication as my body wouldn't support the pregnancy. (ps I'm not trying to get pregnant.)

I was prescribed Esmya last week on my first visit to a gynae, my doctor was hoping they could insert the mirena coil under anaesthetic, I was hoping for a vaginal myomectomy but was quite surprised to be told my only option was a hysterectomy! sad I have a few small fibroids (sizes unknown) and a large fibroid the size of a tennis ball which is sat the top of my cervix. I'm not able to have any vaginal surgery due to the location of the large fibroid and they are not sure whether I will have a vertical or horizontal cut. I'm scheduled to have an MRI in November when they'll know exactly what's going on and then I'll see a consultant.

I'm trying to remain positive but struggling with all this bleeding which has been going on since I haemorrhaged, fainted and then had a blood transfusion in mid August wink

Gosh dont we all suffer? I've been reading this thread for some time without posting and we REALLY do suffer. I'm on day 21 of Esmya, still bleeding, feel awful and have no date as yet for hysto. Would never have considered a hysto or any other gynae op and certainly not at my age ( I'm almost 52) but I seriously can't take any more sad

Its like a living hell isnt it?

LOADS of love to all you beautiful and amazing ladies.

Hi - I live in Canada, and I've suffered a horrible summer with fibroids and severe blood loss. My gyny has just recommended that I try Fibristol - which is the Canadian name for Esmya. I know it's been in use in Europe for a while now, and that's why I'm here. I am wondering if anyone can tell me about their experiences with Esmya. I have at least three fibroids, and they all seem to be about 2.5 - 3cm. I am considering using this to avoid surgery, because we'd like to try and have a baby. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy after using Esmya?

I'm interested in your stories - please share!

Hi, I am on my 39 days of Esmya tablets and today I got my period. I thought Esmya will stop it. Has anyone experienced it?

Hi Lamypie, yes I have experienced the same thing. I am just starting my 3rd month on Esmya and started my period 3 days ago, just as heavy and painful as before and passing some massive blood clots.

I too was told that Esmya would stop everything but even on days when there has been no bleeding I have had a very thick, smelly, mucous discharge so have been unable to go out without wearing sanitary towels. I also suffer from a condition called Lichen Sclerosus which is being aggravated by the constant need to wear sanitary towels so as you can imagine I am somewhat disappointed with my progress so far on Esmya.

I guess it's just not suited to everyone :-(

But having your period doesn't mean Esmya will not shrink the fibroids, is it? I don't mind having a period even if it says it will stop the last two cycles as long as it shrinks the fibroids.

Is it also a normal procedure that before my surgery (abdominal myomectomy), they scan me to see if the tablet actually worked or not? If it didn't then to delay the surgery till the fibroids gets smaller with other medications.

    thanks

It can still shrink the fibroids and mine have already shown signs of reducing but still symptomatic.

Hope you get good results from the Esmya and your op goes well

    Hi all smile

kk108 - yes we really do suffer sad Appart from the heavy bleeding which is bad enough, are you getting any other side effects? Sorry to hear that you need to have a hysto but it's got to be better than 'living' like this!

Angel4life - pleased to hear your op went well and hope your recovery is swift. Did you have any side effects when you were on the esmya?

Hi Sam & essjaybee - you're depressing me sad heavy bleeding on day 39?! My first 10 days were a living hell evil Then its been v v light and I'm now on day 20. If I dont have a period this month then I'll put it down to esmya and will be overjoyed smile if i do I'll be freaking out frown as I have a tendancy to haemorrhage and faint. Considering I had a blood transfusion in August my Hb is now only 8.9 which is lower than I was in August before that fainting episode, so dont have much blood too lose neutral

Oddbits - I don't know about trying for a baby, its something you'll need to discuss with your gynae. All I know is that fibroids will continue to grow once you stop taking the medication and you're strongly advised not to get pregnant whilst taking it as they are not sure of the effects on the unborn child or if you'll be able to carry for long. Good luck smile
