Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

    Hi everyone,

I just found this forum and I am hoping some of you can share some of your knowledge with me. I've been recently diagnosed with multiple large fibroids the largest being about 10 cm. I have had a hysteroscopy, dilation and curettage and biopsy done 2 days ago, I am now waiting for the results.

Following the results my Gynecologist wants to start treatment with Esmya, to possible avoid hysterectomy. I have done a lot of research and as far as I can see it will only shrink them temporarily.

Also I am a bit concerned about the side effects, such as feeling dizzy and sick and also acne as I am already suffering from adult acne which is controlled by antibiotics and feeling unwell due to anemia.

I am wondering if it would be best to try to get a hysterectomy to just get it over and done with, because i feel I am just delaying the inevitable, as i'm 43 and don't want any children. I would be really grateful if some of you would like to share your thoughts and experiences with me.

Hi not sure if this helps but my own experience now 6 weeks post op is: I also had multiple fibroids & was prescribed 3 months esmya.... Have to say had zero side effects and felt really well however when it came to the op I had over a dozen removed vaginally before surgery aborted to tah to remove finally largest one! So yes my surgery was pretty invasive! And I'm very active on go person but it has really taken its time and recovery is good but slow ! However I'm really well in myself feel really healthy and already reaping benefits!my advice would be dont underestimate it's a big invasive operation and you need to allow time to recover ( which I've learnt the hard way) be warned of the swelling it's quite something but slowly going down! It's not a quick win but I really do not regret having my surgery!

    Hi Trish 1971

Having a hysterectomy is a huge decision, and one which only you can make. I have done everything

possible to avoid having one, however, it is a personal decision, and one you will reach. My story is

a long one, I am 45, and have had 3 children, but it came as a shock to be told I would have an

early menopause if I had a hysterectomy, as they would remove both of my ovaries. One has

now been removed due to having a large cyst on it, which was benign. I still have a large fibroid,

which after one myomectomy, will be hopefullly going onto Esmya for a second round, with a view

to further surgery. I may reach that turning point, because they have peaked at 12 days, which is almost

have of my monthly cycle, and it is depressing each month. I am anaemic again, and I personally

belive dependant on where you live, your healthcare is delivered differently. My GP last week said,

she would write back to my consultant to see if this Esmya is the right way for me, he has already said

it is, which makes me question where I fit into this scenario. After all, this is a private referral, which

I paid for, but each time it comes to my GP, it feels like another battle, when I already feel emotional around this subject. They also, stopped my ferrous sulphate this July after 3 years, because my FBC was up, but I iknew I would be back again, it is all down to funding unfortunatley. I am not afraid to

challenge them though, in fact in some respects, it makes me more determined to pursue my choice

of treatment. I hope this helps..................

    Hi there,

thank you very much for your replies. Could somebody tell me what the average waiting time on the NHS is for a hysterectomy after finishing a 3 month course of Esmya, please?

I have tried to look on the NHS website, but it doesn't give you any idea about waiting times.

    Thanks for your help.

Hi Trish1971, waiting times vary from trust to trust across the country. I am currently sat in my hospital bed following a hysterectomy for fibroids. My waiting time was 4 months but my date was brought forward due to an increase in the severity of my symptoms.

I had several large fibroids remaining, the largest of which was the size of a grapefruit and situated actually in my cervix so I had a radical hysterectomy including cervix and ovaries.

I wish you the best of luck with your treatment and hope you don't have to wait too long.

    Hello Ladies,

I'm 32 yo, and I've been diagnosed with a 3,7 cm fibroid and a 6 cm ovarian cyst in November.

After 4 weeks, I went for a private US ( abroad - cheap in here) , and my fibroid grown, now is 5,7

cm. Grown 2 cm in one month!

I have a pelvic pain, bowel problems since 8 months.

I have an NHS gynae appoinment in January.

My question is, is the 2 cm growing a lot in 4 weeks ? And what they can do with a 5,7 cm fibroid?

    Thank you!

    Hi ella81

You will be looking at a myomectomy, may need to be on esmya for 3 months to prepare womb prior to

surgery. This is dependant on the type of fibroid, and where it is growing etc. I paid for private consultation

also, however, the treatment was on the NHS in the UK.

    Hi Ella 81,

I know everyone's experience is different, but for me it was pretty much a breeze. I just finished my 3 month course and I think there was some shrinkage though not as much as i would have liked. I have an ultra-sound in January to confirm. I still got my periods though they were a lighter, basically manageable, pretty much only took tranzexmic once and that was because i was at work, in meetings and nervous about flooding (no other bleeding), had some fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath, but otherwise uneventful. My fibroid is 13 cm by 10 and intramural. I am inclined to believe, based upon what i have read that the type of fibroid makes a difference to how your body responds to the meds. Hope this info. provides you some ease and that you have a positive experience with it. Fingers crossed that the effects last over the next few months while i decide my next course of action! Good luck

    Hi Ella,

I have got multiple fibroids my uterus is the size of 22 weeks, with the largest fibroid being 9cm.

I'm hoping the Esmya will help to shrink them a bit and stop me from being so miserable.

    Hi all,

I just had a consultation with a top laparoscopic surgeon. I have 5 fibroids, sizes 5cm,5cm,4cm,4cm,2cm.

I was going to go on GNRH and then have the big 3 remove by key hole, so that i minimise risk of complications and blood loss. However the surgeon advise me to just have open surgery and remove them all.

I am scared of having open surgery cos it has a lot of risks, like your organs getting attached to womb after surgery, also risk of needing c-section birth etc. I'm 31.

    Has anyone got advice?

Anyone had open myomectomy and feel great afterwards? How long was recovery?

Any advice will be appreciated...i'm feeling quite apprehensive as ive done esmya and it worked but its not a permanent solution...

    Dear Missy,

So sorry to hear that you have five fibroids!

I 'm a beginner only, but what about to see an other surgeon for second opinion?
