Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

    It's me again.

I'm working in a hospital with doctors and also I went to see London 's best gynae surgeon and he completely ignored my problem ( 5.7 cm fibroid - he told me that is VERY SMALL) . So just to say the best, not allways a best! See an other opinion!

  • Posted

Thanks ella81. oh did he say that? i guess if its just the one then it is quite small and can be removed laparoscopically?

I have been to see 4 gynaes now sad'

Wish there was some sort of magic pill to make them go away...they are a real nightmare....affecting my sleep cos i have to wake up every night to go to the loo sad

  • Posted

Yes, he didn't say or suggest or fo anything else.

I have pain almost every night, can't go to the loo, lost 9 kg, can't eat because I feel full. And he said, 5.7 cm fibroid is very small, nothing to do.

I'm looking for an other gynaecologist now.

Being 25 years old, i never thought about the possibility of getting a fibroid in my uterus. Most females my age are worried about protecting themselves from STD's and unexpected pregnancies. My cycle became irregular and began to get heavier around February of this year. Being that i am abstaining, i didn't think it was anything rare. I asked those around me however the most common question i received from family members, "ARE YOU STRESSED" (O_o)

    I continued to live and ignored it. However, around August, the cramps I had previously began to subside (Being less intense and frequent.) The cramps turned into a hard pressing in my pelvis and sharp pains at times. It formed into this LARGE KNOT that i could literally move to the side! I asked once again, if this was normal... to those older than me.... I got little insight. SO< google="" and="" web="" md="" became="" my="" friend.="" my="" mother="" set="" and="" appointment="" after="" i="" told="" her="" my="" findings.="" upon="" seeing="" a="" doctor,="" they="" sent="" me="" to="" do="" an="" ultrasound.="" not="" only="" was="" what="" i="" felt="" a="" genuine="" fibroid,="" but="" there="" were="" two="" in="" there!!!="" the="" smaller="" one="" is="">>> 6 CMS >>>11 CMS < all around. in the ultra sound picture ... no lie... there looks like there was a face in it (-_-) !!

they are so close they are overlapping almost. the doctor stated, at this point i am not able to have kids until it is removed. she stated that she will have to get with her colleagues to determine the best method to remove them being that (a) they are so large (b) they are close to the wall of my uterus and one my ovary and (c) because of me being so young and still desiring to have children.

    i said all that, to say, has anyone encountered this type of challenge? what did they do for you? did you still have children? if so, how many? was it difficult to conceive? once again i am 25 and curious as well as anxious. all="" around.="" in="" the="" ultra="" sound="" picture="" ...="" no="" lie...="" there="" looks="" like="" there="" was="" a="" face="" in="" it="" (-_-)="" !!="" they="" are="" so="" close="" they="" are="" overlapping="" almost.="" the="" doctor="" stated,="" at="" this="" point="" i="" am="" not="" able="" to="" have="" kids="" until="" it="" is="" removed.="" she="" stated="" that="" she="" will="" have="" to="" get="" with="" her="" colleagues="" to="" determine="" the="" best="" method="" to="" remove="" them="" being="" that="" (a)="" they="" are="" so="" large="" (b)="" they="" are="" close="" to="" the="" wall="" of="" my="" uterus="" and="" one="" my="" ovary="" and="" (c)="" because="" of="" me="" being="" so="" young="" and="" still="" desiring="" to="" have="" children.="" i="" said="" all="" that,="" to="" say,="" has="" anyone="" encountered="" this="" type="" of="" challenge?="" what="" did="" they="" do="" for="" you?="" did="" you="" still="" have="" children?="" if="" so,="" how="" many?="" was="" it="" difficult="" to="" conceive?="" once="" again="" i="" am="" 25="" and="" curious="" as="" well="" as="" anxious.="">

    Hi Bright_Irises,

So sorry to hear that you are suffering from fibroids so young. I am 44 years old, I have a son aged 21. I started developing problems about 18 months ago, had an ultrasound scan where they found what they thought was 1 very large fibroid approx 10-12cm.

Initially they prescribed prostap injections to try to reduce the size of the fibroids but I could not continue with these because I was getting some unpleasant side effects....they effectively throw your body into temporary menopause as it is the fertility hormones that allow fibroids to grow. This was, as a result, ineffective.

The next stage was to try Esmya which had some success although it did not stop my constant bleeding, although I know most people have not had that problem.

The next step was to try to remove the fibroids transvaginally, I had a TCRE (Trans Cervical Resection of the Endometrium). During this procedure they found not 1 but 2 fibroids.....much like yours, very close together and almost overlapping. The procedure was 95% successful but regrettably for me it unfortunately did not resolve my problems. This was because following the procedure they discovered 3 further fibroids actually in the muscle of the womb which could not be operated on.

Regrettably for me, this left a last resort of a hysterectomy which I have just undergone but my case has always been a very complex one.

I do not want you to be put off though because everyone's stories are different and everyone has there happy ending, no matter what that may be.

For me, it was the hysterectomy but I know for you this is not an option and I hope it never comes to that.

I would ask your consultant about ALL of the options available to you and make a decision based on what is best for yourself.

    Best of luck sweetheart x

@ Missy26092 in reply to your question - Anyone had open myomectomy and feel great afterwards? How long was recovery?

I had mine 6 weeks ago and two days after the surgery I was great because I had Morphine but the third and fourth day after my surgery I felt really sick - nausea, constipation, difficulties getting up and down the hospital bed. They took out my prolene stich on the fifth day before I was discharged. For two weeks I rested, no pain at all just difficult sleeping the correct way. 3rd and fourth week - difficult to stand for long period, had to go back to work sad & 5th and 6th back to work normal hours - still stomach sore but everything else normal. Gain wt sad. Now my tummy feels smaller but not straight away, no constipation (that was my major problem), scar healed nicely.

My period is late - I stopped my Esmya 6 weeks ago a day before my surgery and two weeks ago I thought I was getting my period ( had all the symptoms) then it didn't come. Has anyone got the same issue. How long did it take for your period to start after Esmya and Myomectomy? thanks

Hello ladies. I am a newcomer here and so pleased to find you as I am halfway through a 3 month course of Esmya. I have at least 2 (known as multi) intramural fibroids measuring 8x10 and 6x8cm. In early Nov.I decided against UAE as I felt uneasy about it ( Pva glue particles blocking blood supply etc.). After careful thought and a long discussion with an excellent GyneI am now hoping to have a laparoscopic hyst. some time in February and was wondering if anyone had successfully gone down this road? I don't know yet if the Esmya has shrunk anything and no doubt will have a scan when I've finished the Course. My concern is that I will come around having had abdominal surgery which will be a whole different story as far as recovery goes. (self employed need to plan). Does size matter or is it location or surgeon that make the difference is my Question. Many thanks to you all

    Happy New Year Ladies smile

I'm having my re- scan next week, and after I have my appointment with a gynaecologist two days after.

I had a scan in November, which showed a 3,5cm fibroid. I went for a private scan abroad in December and the fibroid was 5,7 cm. Looks like my fibroid grown 2 centimeters in one month.

And the problem is, I don't like the gynaecologist who I'm going to see...

    I don't know what can I dosad

    Hi Sam,

I was glad to hear about your experience with the myomectomy sounds like it wasn't too bad...

In terms of Esmya my experience was good my period didn't stop, but my fibroids reduced.

Happy new year all! May this year bring good news for all fibroid sufferers!!

my last Esmya pill from a 2 month course was 25.11.2013

I still don't have a period, my fibroid is tiny now, my gynacologist checked in December.

she said I would get my period in 2 weeks but it has yet to come despite permanently having the symptoms.

am waiting for my consultant to call me back since yesterday as I was there and had a blood test.

how long did it take for other people's periods to return?

I will not need surgery as my fibroid is tiny now.

    Hi JJJJJBBBBB

This past Sunday I stopped taking my 90 day supply of Fibristal. I started my period last night. So it was 3 days after stopping Fibristal that I started my period. It was bright red and watery last night, but this morning was dark brown and minimal. I have minor cramps right now too.

My OB/GYN is NOT sending me for an ultrasound until I have had a period that is similar to what I experienced before taking the Fibristal.

I hope one day we can take Fibristal for more than 90 days.

JJJJJBBBBB that's great news that it worked for you! My period was about 7 days later than I expected after a three months of Esmya. What type of fibroid do you have and how big was it when you started?

I too hope that one day this can be taken more than 90 days. Also, since this medication is promising for many, perhaps other companies will build on the learnings and come forward with new and improved formulas!

    Hi cam and Kristen.

I have now been on Esmya for 4 months.

The licensing laws are changing so that they can be taken for longer than 3 months.

I had my tablets for 3 months, alongside Tranexamic acid for 4 days to lighten my periods which does help, and evening primrose oil for breast pain. After the 3 month Esyma, the consultant then had to ensure I had a months break from Esmya, and I have now nearly finished my 4 month.

I have an appointment at the hospital every 4 weeks, and the gyno said she wanted me to take it up to 6 months if I feel well enough, my fibroid is now 8.5cm, so still pretty big, and is sat in the womb wall.

Unfortuately 3 days ago, I had to take myself to A&E, as I had horrific abdominal pains, After ECG, blood tests, urine sample and scan, it turns out that there is a pocket of fluid that has appeared in the fybroid, and it appears to be leaking.

They are not yet sure if this is the fybroid breaking down, had anyone else experienced this?

The gyno has given me an emergency number to contact 24/7, if I get any worse. I have been given more painkillers, so now on 6 different types of pills, and they are making me feel a bit better.

Am really worried about this pocket of fluid, can anyone give any advice?

    Hi Kim

Are the licensing laws in the UK?

I have had what I can only describe as "wet releases" I am wondering if this what I may have, I am day 2

of period at the minute, and can say last night I felt like I was in labour, really low pain, and lower back

pain, which brought me to tears. I have also started to clot again, hot water bottles and co-codamol to

take the pain off. I am 45, and started to wonder if this was the beginning of the change for me?

My myomectomy was September 2013, and fibroid is sat centrally in my womb 16-18 weeks, I am back

next week to see my consultant, it sounds like you have got your esmya easily, for me the whole process has felt like a huge battle.
