Posted , 151 users are following.

Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

Hi, I would not have thought so but I have a policy of never say never because the human body is an amazing piece of machinery and there's a lot we still don't know about it.

As I understand it, fibroids grow because of the fertility hormones produced to stimulate our ovaries. If you've had your ovaries removed then you would no longer be producing the hormones which the fibroids need to grow.

All you can do is speak with your consultant or GP and ask. If you have a growth in your abdomen which is causing you discomfort and/or worry then it needs to be investigated.

Thank you. It is worrying me and I haven't even told my husband about it ! So it was nice to be able to unload and get some opinions. Obviously I need to go back to the docs. I knew that anyway !! I just needed a push. Thanks for all your comments. I'll post on here when I find out what it is/was.

Hi Deanne2, Thank you very much for all the information you have posted in your reply. I just wonder if at the age of 57 it is really worth spending all that money. It is difficult to know if I am post menopausal due to the Zoladex implants. Over the last 6 years I have had 6 in total, and each time that I have had 2, 3 monthly ones in succession I have gone 18 months to 2 years without having a period, or any symptoms, and no side effects. My last implant was in November 13, following the first period for 2 years (it was horrendous!) and the gyne department now refuse to give me another, because of the risk of osteoporosis. Surely, 1 more wouldn't make much difference? I would be symptom and period free for the next 2 years, by which time I would be nearly 60! Unfortunately, both our local hospitals are under special measures due to high mortality rates, so I really don't have much faith in the doctors at all.

    Hi dianemx5

I don't know much about Zoladex implants I'm afraid. If you were post menopausal and no longer had periods, would that make you symptom free? My fibroid was so large that I would still have had problems from the sheer pressure the fibroid created in my pelvis which made me feel that I needed the toilet constantly and made me look as though I was pregnant. I didn't have particularly heavy periods however as the fibroid was growing on the outside surface of my uterus. In your case if you think you would be symptom free after the menopause then I suppose it might be worth waiting as it can't be far off. Would it be worth paying privately for a second opinion and then making a decision?

Hi Deanne2, When I don't have periods, I don't really have any symptoms. I usually know when a period is going to start about 2 months beforehand. I feel bloated, have crampy pains, & my clothes feel tight. I have always hoped that after the menopause, the fibroid would shrink, and all my problems would be over. I honestly thought I had reached that stage, I couldn't believe it when thing started happening again. I must admit I was referred to the hospital, and seen very quickly as there was a chance it could have been cancer. The CT scan showed that my womb lining was very thin, but that the fibroid had grown. I think it might be a good idea to see someone privately, and get a second opinion. Do you think this is something I could discuss with Mr Trehan?

    Hi dianemx5

I think so. He has years of experience so I am sure he has come across similar problems. He would need a referral from your GP and the results of any tests, scans etc

    Hi

I have been taking Esmya for two weeks now, no major side effects other than occasional headaches/nausea and a few spots but all manageable. My main query is that I have had a slight pinky/brown discharge on most days; wondered if anyone else had this whilst on the tablets at all?

    Thank you

Ive just found out I have a huge fibroid after going through so many tests I also found out I was pregnant as Well I was told medically not to carry on with the pregnancy because my body couldn't handle carrying them both. I couldn't take the medication esmya if I was pregnant. I've never though about having children before I wanted to finish uni and start a good career the. Have children. But now that's all I can think of I'm only 21 and feeling very worried about my operation because of the chance I might have to have a hysterectomy. Has anyone had the operation and avoid that procedure? I now feel like a evil person and full of regret if I can't have children my mind has been all over the place could do with some good advice and insight on how anyone's operation has gone. Thanks

Hi I'm on day 3 of taking esmya I've been given it to stop bleeding which has been pretty constant for about 15 months and to shrink the uterus before a hysterectomy in June. I'm lucky I'm having op done at a private hospital on the NHS. This was one if the 4 options when I got the initial letter from the NHS. Does anyone know if the tablets make you worse (bleeding) before it stops only I've lost a lot during the night. It says it increases red blood cells before the operation which is great as I usually end up taking ferrus sulphate for anaemia. Will be so glad when it's all over. I am worried about the operation and anaesthetic but can't wait to get rid of all the problems that have been plaguing me so long.

    hi Mandy79780

I stopped bleeding for the full 3 months while on esmya, mine was prior to a myomectomy procedure last

year. My first attempt was cancelled because I had not taken the full 3 month course and I haemoraghed

during the procedure. My procedures have all been in a private hospital under the NHS, and this alone

does made a massive difference not sharing a ward, and having privacy.

I am waiting for an arterial embolisation, however, my symptoms are getting worse quite rapidly and I

believe a hysterectomy is pending. My back constantly aches, my belly feels so heavy, and I have been

getting fluid from my vagina, to the point now where I am wearing a pad the whole month, which is

getting me down, a couple of months ago it was the occassional twice a day feeling of flooding,

now it is constant. I am concerned about this, in January my consultant said it was due to me having a

myomectomy, but why? he never really answered this.

I wonder if I will need to take esmya again, I personally had a massive issue getting mine from the GP

    due to funding.

I have been exhausting all avenues before the big "H", but am more accepting now, it impacts on all

areas of life, and can be debilitating. Have you had to wait long for your date?

    Hi Valerie89

Thank you for your reply i haven't had much sleep just sat still most of the night so i didn't move and flood again. It seems to have slowed down this morning.

I first see the consultant on february 24th i wasn't expecting him to come straight out and offer a hysterectomy so i asked for some time to think about it and i got a follow up appointment through on march 24th which is when i agreed to a hysterectomy. They had to order esmya in at the surgery for me but it came that afternoon. I have just moved back to this surgery in october and prior to that they tried me on diffrerent tablets and the mirena coil which never worked and was virtually falling out when my current doctor examined me.

I am ready for the big H I have had 16 months of this and i am ready to hopefully put it all behind me and be 'normal' at last. I live in dark coloured jeans just in case i flood and i am so fed up of having to go buy sanitry products every week.

I have recently come across 2 people that have had it done at this private hospital and they got on fine and apparently the thing to watch for is the cram pains caused by wind afterwards.

I have been with my boyfriend since november and he has been brilliant through all of this and very understanding.

I just want to be free of this now and get on with my life again, other women tell me it's the way to go and i won't look back

    just to add

I turned down the embolization i read that it can cause pain after and possible bleeding for 6 months and i didn't want to go through that and still end up with a hysterectomy further down the line.

We are all different so i hope it really works for you

I don't cope well with having things done to me and wanted to get this over with
