Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

I'm 41, have taken Esmya for 3 months & I'm current taking a break before I can take it for another 3 months. I also have a scan scheduled for a couple of weeks time to see if my fibroid has shrunk. I'm not taking it in readiness for an operation (currently) & was told I could take this for up to 12 months. My experience taking it has been good. I've has mild side effects but they are a vast improvement to my normal symptoms. The side effects have included more headaches, occasional nausea, more discharge initially. However a major plus has been no periods which has been a blessed relief! I also have endometriosis so I have had very mild pain in comparison to normal. The issue I'm having now on the break (I'm a week in waiting for a period which could be up to 4 weeks apparently) is more nausea, lots of pain, headaches, feeling tired & not sleeping, horrible rage/feeling emotional, and some clear discharge. I feel awful. I'm hoping that I get a period soon so I can start on the pills again for another 3 months as comparatively I felt great. I'm worried about what happens at the end of the 12 months. Anyone going through similar or out the other side?

    Hi Melanie

I have been having Esmail for nearly 6 months. First 2 months were really hard , I was experiencing constent tiredness but all after the 2 months I got settled and feel normal . I am pleased in the sense that am not having any pain killers anymore as am not having periods which is such a relief !

My only side effects now would be the condition of my skin has deteriorated, more acne, dark patches have developed on my forehead. Apart from that I am happy.

    Hi everyone

I have been taking Esmya for 3 months and have recently started another 3 month coursefollowing a break. As others have mentioned, the first couple of months were hard with occasional terrible mood swings and headaches but this subsides after a few weeks. I still have my period too which from what I have read isn't uncommon.

I have around 8 fibroids with 2 large in size. I had a scan a few weeks ago after taking Esmya for 3 months and they have shrunk in size which I am happy about. Hopefully it will continue. I live in the UK and have got these on the NHS. I had to be firm with my GP for a referral and again firm with the consultant about prescribing them as they don't want to unless you opt for the operation. So far it is working for me and I'm hoping to continue taking them for 12 months and see how it goes and whether I can avoid an operation. Good luck to everyone on here. Dealing with fibroids is emotionally and physically distressing so any help we can get to ease this is a good thing but you have to do what is best for you.

Hey there I'm 25 years old, I have 8 fibroids two of which are 7cm and the rest are 4/5cm, I've already been through a year of hormone injections to shrink my fibroids which put me into a false menopause (which was horrible) that treatment didn't work and I grew more fibroids rather than them shrinking. My gynaecologist has not put me on esmya,as surgeons are refusing to do any operations on my fibroids due to my age and family status, I have been on the treatment for two months now only side effects I've really had is tiredness and headaches, I'm going to be on this treatment for the best part of 3 years so hoping it goes well

      Hi Ashley

Sorry to hear about your problems with fibroids. I am on my 3rd course of Esmya now. I too have multiple fibroids, the largest of which measured 11cm in February. Pleased to report though that the largest has shrunk down to 5cm and the other smaller ones shrunk as well. I found the first course extremely difficult though, bloated, weight gain , sickliness and very tired. When i met with my gynaecologist he did say the 2nd course would be less side effects. Well he was right and I am so pleased with the results and look and feel so much better. I expect to be on this treatment long term as well. Hope my experiences help you and good luck xxx

Hi I am 53 years old, suffered really heavy and prolonged bleeding for past 3/4 years hoping menopause would come to take it all away, but alas not. I have severe abdominal swelling (looking bout 8 months pregnant!), cramping and anaemia due to heavy bleeding. Gynaecologist diagnosed multiple large fibroids and endometriosis, recommends total hysterectomy which I am trying to put as last resort as I have special needs child and critically ill father to look after at present and cannot have week in hospital followed by 6-8 weeks recovery. She put me on Esmya 3 weeks ago( 3 months course) to shrink the fibroids. Started taking on 1st day period, bleeding almost non existent (yah!) but stomach feels like it's going to pop, severe cramping worse than before, sickness and diahorrea since 2nd day. Been in bed for most of the last week, fatigue, headaches, dizzy, feeling awful. I'm not sure whether to continue with tablets as I feel even worse than before and I need to be at the hospital to be with my father. Anyone else suffering such severe side effects? Maybe they will diminish over time and I need to persevere...... cannot get to see gynae until June and no gp appointment for 3 weeks. Any advice?

Have you taken these tablets? Any side effects? Maybe I will try and speak to pharmacy tomorrow to see if they can offer advice

They are quite a new drug so they don't really know that much about them 😩. Yep I managed 3 weeks and came off them as they turned me into a psycho (hormone wise) gave me headaches too!!

Oh that doesn't sound too good either. I think I definitely go to hospital pharmacy tomorrow to ask some questions and see what they recommend. What other options they recommend for you?

Good luck with that, hope all goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

      Hi Julie and Karmaway

Just read your recent posts and send best wishes to you both.

I had the same experience as Julie 3 years ago and took Esmya for 3 months to shrink an 11cm fibroid (with friends) and endometriosis. The bleeding and anaemia meant I had to do something. I booked in for uterine embolisation but after big discussion with female gyne decided on laparoscopic Hysterectomy keeping ovaries instead.

This was a great success and was driving and back at work in 3 weeks. I even went on a skiing holiday 7 weeks post op.

Reason for telling you is that the recovery was no where near as bad as I imagined.

I hope you both can get back to being sort of normal soon.

Thanks for your best wishes, glad you had a quick recovery from the op. I think I will end up with the total hysterectomy Eventually ..... Maybe when the timing is a bit better..... just have to manage best I can in the meantime.

Hi Julie, i was on Esmya for 10 months and have been told to have a 3 months break. My first 2 months were Really bad , with fatigue , laziness, headaches, mood swings... but after it got settled and i was ok. I was 10 months without periods and loved it .1st Couple of months were hard but was worth it. I was told to stop to take the tablets last month, and 2 weeks later i had my periods again . Felt in so bad pain !!!! I can't bear the pain for another 2 months until i see my gynocologist ! So finally decided to go private hospital where i have my appointment this coming Friday.

If they tell me to go for the op, i will do it coz now i have no energy to put up with the pain !! Am scared too but will see. Hope things gets sorted in your end too Julie. Xx

Maybe worth staying with it for a while, but wanted the daily struggles to improve, not get worse. Really bad timing for me at the moment and just need to get through it all in as little pain and symptoms as possible. Just not sure which way to go at the moment, not sure I can cope with severe cramps, sickness and diahorrea for another week, let alone longer.... but had dangerously bad anaemia before. Catch 22 really.

Hope your appointment goes well on Friday.

      Hi Dee

I hope your pain has stopped since your last post.

How did you get on at your appointment on Friday? Hope you got the information you need to make an informed choice about your treatment options.

      Best wishes

      Julie
