Esmya Tablets Fibroid Treatment

Posted , 151 users are following.

Hello I'm 44 and have recently been diagnosed with a 11cm Fibroid, my Gyno has put me on Esmya to try and shrink the fibroid, I just wondered if any one could me advice or their review as its fairly new treatment and can't find anyone who has tried it.

Thank you

Hi.  I have just started taking Esmya, 5 days in, after years of very heavy periods due to multiple fibroids.  I'm still bleeding very heavily and was wondering whether anyone could tell me how long it takes to kick in?  I suppose I'm expecting a miracle immediate cure!   I am 55

Hi Helen, I am nearly finished my second cycle (three months then two months break and nearly finished second lot of three months) I find that it takes about three weeks to kick in.

Hope they work well for you. I am 51 and Esmya gave me a welcome break from the dreadful pain and bleeding. I had 2 dreadful periods during the break, but you do know they will end once you start again. Unfortunately I have been told it can only be used for four cycles and it does not look like I am near my menopause (typical) I have made the decision to have a hysterectomy as I want my life back! Esmya did help me a lot and I am very grateful to have had the break, this gave me the time to get my head straight and in the right place.....I am ready to have the hysterectomy now.

      Good luck

Hi Barb.  Thanks for taking the time to reply, and the information,  much appreciated.

I hadn't even heard of Esmya until last week, but the gynaecologist suggested trying it as a last resort, pre-hysterectomy. I'm hoping they help because as you say, it'll be a break from the incessant bleeding.  Like you, i think I've got my head around the operation now, just might be good to get a bit of respite.  Even at 55, the menopause seems to be avoiding me!

      Good luck with the operation

Hi Helen, tbh the break is so nice if like me the bleeding had been going on for months, and he big tummy, achy legs, constant need for the loo......bet you know that the list goes on and on! Not much fun being female sometimes! The one thing I forget to mentioned I did have some mild side effects using Esmya, there is a strange discharge that is pinkish or clear, nothing to worry about as it is the fibroid peeling ( that is what I was told and is how they shrink).......was enough that I always wear a pantyliner, also in the beginning I also had a few dizzy spells.....these do settle down in time and the only one I notice now is that I feel a bit more tired that usual and my joints ach a bit, very minor things and compared to how I was feeling before Esmya was a god send. I think for younger people trying to preserve their fertility this must give them hope for the future!

I really hope it works for you.....and if it can get you to menopause even better (never though I would wish for it to start!) 😁

      Take care

Hi Barb.  The tablets do sound like a godsend after all the rubbish things we have to deal with, I'm sure they'll kick in soon, can't wait!  It's just great to hear from people who are going/have gone through the same things!

      Thanks Barb

I am 37 and I have just started on Esmya medicine, I have been on this for a month now, this was prescribed as a pre op for Hysteroscopic operation, as I refused to have full hysterectomy. It's difficult to go tell if I have side effects, I do have blurred vision and dizziness but I also have other medicine to take that causes this also, but I have missed my period, it is now 8 days late, but I still feel a little pmt and still have a few cramps now and then, I did have a period about a week after I first started on the meds but so far this 2nd period has not arrived, and definitely a lot less pain.

Hi i had a keyhole hysterectomy in october best thing ever. I had terrible side effects from Esmya

Hi Lynsay,  are you not aware that bleeding (in most cases) completely stops shortly after taking esmya, so in effect you will 'not' have your periods for the 3 months you are on it. When you have 2 month gap you will have one period usually before starting it again (If you do have another 3 month course).  This is what happens for the majority of women.  Regards, S

Hi Barb, if you are still on esmya or do again, it is good advice to take the daily pill in the evening, due to the slight tiredness effect. Rather than experiencing that during the day.  S

Hi, I have always taken mine at night as they do make me feel groggy and it seems to work well for me.

I hope they work for you too. 😀

I took Esmya for 10 months, then gyno said to stop for 3 months and we will have a scan. As soon i stopped Esmya, i had my periods, and the pain was sooo bad that i could not stand, and also could not wait another 3 months ( as my appointment with gyno then) , so went private hospital. They asked me to do a MRI scan and they decided that a total hysterectomy was the best option. I did it 3 weeks ago and that's the best thing ever !!!!!! If i had waited to see ny NHS gyno i would have be still in horrible pain, or waiting list on op for another year !!!

But hysterectomy was the best decision 😃

Hi Dee, sorry to hear about your pain, i was exactly the same, ended up in hospital during the break on morphine! I am now booked in for hysterectomy in Aug, scared witless but have tried everything else offered to me and think this is the only way to bring this to an end once and for all, blooming fibroids are taking over my life! Do you feel better after hysterectomy, was it worth it? Do you mind me asking what kind you had? I am very nervous, but also can't wait for all of this to be behind me.....the pain has been unbearable at times!

I wish you well and hope you have made a full recovery (and can wear white if you feel like it........I can't risk it at the moment lol).

      Hi Dee

Sorry you had such bad pain before your op. I've had a similar experience with excruciating pain with persistent sickness and diarrhoea coming off Esmya and spent nearly 3 weeks in bed feeling absolutely dreadful. It got so bad I almost went to A&E but resisted in case they decided to admit me, which I didn't want.

I am now on Zoladex implant for 4 months with a review in November with Gynaecologist with a view to doing a full hysterectomy, which I am trying to put as a last resort because of complications with care for my son. I have been bleeding again for 2 weeks, light but painful cramps along with the sickness and diarrhoea. I have my second injection booked for next Wednesday. The second injection is supposed to stop periods completely (still bled on Esmya) but causes a medical menopause with associated sweats and hot flashes, etc. Which I have been getting for the last 3/4 years anyway so hoping they will not get any worse.

How long were you in hospital? And how do you feel 3 weeks post surgery? Are you able to get around ok without too much pain? When will you be able to drive again?

Sorry for the list of questions, but I am terrified of the surgery and not being able to do anything for weeks (months) after when I have no support at all and have to look after my son at the same time.

      Take care

      Hi Barbara,

Dont be scared of the op. Nowadays the technology has made things easier for the patients. I don't regret it to have it done ! I am still a bit sore as its only been 4 weeks now, but i am not in pain like i used to be before op. I had several fibroids, the largest was 10 cm of diametre , i had endrometriosis on my ovaries of stage 4 and cysts on my ovaries. My ovaries were stuck to the bowl too !! So i had a total hysterectomy ( they removed the uterus, ovaries, cervix, and shaved part of my bowl to clean the endometriosis).

I feel 100 times better now,

      You will be fine Barb

      Good luck

      Hi Dee,

So pleased for you, sounds like you really went through it! I hope your recovery continues to go well and you feel even better in a few weeks time, they say it takes a good six months to feel the full benefits so imagine how good you will feel then! 😁

Thanks for the optimistic outlook, really feel like I need that right now, I know I need it done as have been in so much pain, can't go on like this ( had to cancel holiday!)....but am a bit of a wimp! I am hoping that like you I will feel 100% better afterwards and can get on with the rest of my life!!

Let's hope by Christmas we are feeling heaps better!!

      Thanks for your reply

hi can i ask you some questions as you were on provera an then changed to esmya and this is what i will be doing ...did u stop one and start the other straight away ?

Hi Gemma, I did go straight from Provera onto Esyma, I was told to do that by the GP......but consultant thought I should of had a break as I bled very heavily for a good week or so.........was not good! I would double check and take advise as I think I was told the wrong information and am sure there is a better way to cross over. If like me you are bleeding constantly the swap to Esmya was great, really a welcome break! I stayed on them for nearly nine months and was grateful for the break from my symptoms......but have made since to have hysterectomy, I have not looked back, wish I had it done sooner.......I am 51 so children is not an issue for me and I feel so much better now, the right decision for me! I hope this helps.

Glad your ordeal is over. I was diagnosed in 2014. Had fibroid embolisation in 2014 but last month, I realised that the fibroids have emerged again and I have been prescribed Esyma but after reading some of the comments on this site, I am scared of starting the Esyma.

Please, are there any procedures besides the Esyma that could help me? Just fed up. Don't know what to do...

Hi, you may find that Esmya works really well for you, I found they they really helped me and my main problem was adhesions, they were stuck to my bladder and bowel.......if only fibroids it may be worth giving them a try. I felt ok on them, only a bit tired, I took them at night as they can make you feel a little dizzy so taking them at night stopped that. I am 51 so felt the only way to completely draw a line under this and to ensure they did not come back was to have a hysterectomy, I wanted to get my life back and put all of this behind me.......and luckily I am finally starting to feel like my old self.

      Good luck

      Barb xx
