From what I know, if hyperthyroidism is caused by autoimmune disorder it is called Graves disease. The antibodies are released to attack/stimulate thyroid for producing too much T4, T3 causing hyper. The anti-thyroid med can block thyroid producing hormones thus reducing them, but it can not stop/reduce the thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSI). That is probably why if GD patients treated solely by anti-thyroid med have a low rate of full recovery-- often relapse after euthyroid. The anti-thyroid med is used to reduce/resolve the symptoms, it can not cure the cause of the disease -- autoimmune. Hence after euthyroid staying with AT med at most only works to clean-up the lingering symptom, but it has no effect on reducing antibodies. However, there is evidence that alternative/natural treatments may be designed to tackle/resolve the autoimmune problem, i.e., truly curing the disease. Just my 5c thoughts.
