Excessive head and face sweating

I am 63 and for the last 22 years have suffered with excessive sweating on my head and face, which seems to be getting worse.  This is uncomfortable and embarrassing.  If I do anything even slightly energetic (hoovering, ironing etc.) it is worse, and it takes a long time for me to cool down.  I was referred to a dermatologist who prescribed pills, which just dried up my eyes (red, sore and bloodshot within 30 mins) and mouth (making it impossible to eat or even speak).  She point blank refused to consider any other treatment, even telling me botox does not work for the face, which i know is untrue.  This condition, to other people, seems trivial but it is not.  In the summer I cannot go outside, so I can't even play with my grandchildren.  I certainly couldn't go out shopping or to a social event, the sweat drips off me and my hair is drenched within minutes.  I obviously cannot use make-up, or even have a decent hairstyle, which zaps the confidence.  I do have a thyroid problem but that is well controlled.  I am a little overweight but not much.  I have other non-related medical conditions (arthritis, fibromyalgia).  Has anyone any experience of the new gadget around which includes a mask for the face, plugged into a machine - sorry I can't remember the name of it.  I know they are very expensive but I am desperate.  Any helpful tips would be great.  Thank you.

I am so relieved to find this site, I thought something must be wrong with me as I am 71 and only started this problem last winter, now with the warm weather it has got much worse. I am definitely going to see the Dr if I can get an appointment. To get some medication that might help. It is mainly from my head, and back I don't seem to sweat anywhere else, thankfully. But need to shower several times a day. Hope we find something that will help us all.

Hi Katieh I hope things work out for you & I believe all of us wish you the best. To fight this you need to find a Good Dermatologist that specialises in Excessive Sweating of all the body. Other wise they are in the Dark. Please any medications you are given please look for side affects as well as any interaction from any thing you are taking from Script Pills as well as those over the countet as they can cause other problem. Let us know how you go as most of us are desperate & have tried most pills but it does not mean they wont work for you. Goodluck

The pain is not bad anymore, but if I don't take pills, I go through withdrawal. I don't know what to do. And I've been sweating since I was 40. Now I am 68 , and I sweat so much, that people think I got out of the shower!! I'm sure it's due to the humidity in New York city!!!

      No Salwa15551,

Its not down to the humidity, I live in Wales in the uk and believe me we don't get warm weather often and I am exactly like you 24/7 and 12 months of the year. XXX

I have had this same problem for about 3-4 years. I too have hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis to name a few. My sweating is total body. If I sit in my car too long, cloth seats, it looks like a wet myself. I hate it!!! I have not found anything that helps yet 😢

If you do, please let me know.

I think she is speaking about the sleep apnea machine, or a nebuluzer?? Not sure.

There is a newer machine on the market called the Hummingbird for fibromyalgia that seems somewhat promising. (Google Hummingbird for Fibromyalgia and watch a couple of their videos.

I personally have not tried it. It is kind of expensive, but it does have a 60-day trial version, so you have time to test it out.  If you believe your sweating is coming from Fibromyalgia, it would certainly be worth trying during a 'money back guarantee period'. If it doesn't work for you, you send it back. If you keep it, you pay around 3 payments of $99 (Total was around $300) I believe.

      Just another possibility to consider!

I could be reading about myself when I read your post.  I'm 62 and sweat profusely from my head and face, and this occurs from little exertion or just going outside for a few minutes.  It's so embarrassing to go to social events and sweat is dripping from my hair and face in an air conditioned room, and everyone else seems cool and comfortable.   No other part of my body seems to have this problem.  I've been this way since I was 16 years old, but it's getting worse.  I'm so tired of going to doctors who don't know how to treat this condition, blow it off, and refer me to a gynocologist because they believe the problem is hormonal.  My hormone level was just fine.  I went to a dermatologist who prescribed Oxybutynin.  This did not work for me and packed on 11 pounds, which I later learned was a side effect.  I don't know where else to turn and was so happy to see this forum.  Now I know that I'm not alone in this.  I have learned that other members of my family have had this issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

      Hi Doris68484,

We are all looking for something to help us with this craniofacial hyperhidrosis ( excessive sweating ) it's controlling my life because I won't go anywhere because of it and other issues I have. My doctor put me on Clonidine 2 weeks ago for it, first couple of days I thought omg this is working but it was short lived although I've not had a night sweat in the 2 wks I've been on them because i would wake up throughout the night soaking. But I have got to ring him now to let him know if they are working and he said that he can higher the dose or try something else, but he is not in until Thursday for me to speak to him. I have a big wedding on the 11th of August and I am working myself up something terribly with this excessive head sweating. I am paying to have my makeup & hair done because i would be dripping in sweat if I do it myself because as you know that you don't have to do anything for the sweats to start. My hair is going up but i can just see myself now with droopy wet hair and makeup just running of my face, my anxiety is through the roof the closer the wedding comes.

I had my nephews wedding last year and my hair had gone all wavey before I even got to the church, its just so degrading. I won't be able to dance or drink because just slight movement or drinking any alchol starts me off so it's just not worth it to me, but what's hurtful is people think you use it as a excuse and it drives me nuts. I would love for them to live in my shoes for a day cos they will be begging for their own shoes back !!!

My CBD oil came in the mail yesterday, I took some as soon as I got home from work and saw it had arrived, and took a second dose this morning. I ordered the 350 strength from Diamond CBD. (I ordered cherry flavor) It said use it twice a day.

I used 10 drops under my tongue and let it absorb for 20-30 seconds before swallowing.

I woke up this morning in less pain and stiffness in my neck & back than I have had for the last 2 weeks. So far no sweats. May be coincidental, way too early to tell.

      I'll keep you posted!

I totally understand what you mean. I find myself staying inside most of the day with the A/C on.  Otherwise, just going outside for a few minutes leaves me drenched.  If I go to social get-together, I make sure to stay inside, and even then, sweat badly.  Sweat proof makeup didn't work either.  I don't understand why a solution can't be found.  The dermatologist I used suggested "flght or flight" reaction when being in uncomfortable situations, which leads to excessive sweating.  I wonder if there could be something to this.  I've never tried clonidine.  Please let me know what you find out.  Thanks - and good luck!

I think that may be true for a lot of us, Doris68484.  My sweating, and many of the people here have also mentioned; We sweat from the anxiety of sweating!  LOL It's not really funny, but sounds a little weird.

I think anxiety can play a role in triggering the autonomic nervous system to make us sweat. Anything that increased adrenaline or cortisol into the blood stream, such as worrying over an event that may or may not happen, triggers a reaction.

I always seem to sweat worse if I think about things that make me anxious, such as things I forgot to do at work. Once I get to work, the anxiety I feel goes away, even if I haven't completed the task, because I know I CAN complete it. At home, at night, in bed, you wake up and you can't do anything to fix the problem, which makes you subconsciously frustrated and causes anxiety and increases your sweating or precipitates an episode.

don't think the entire problem is anxiety related, but it does seem to play a role. My sweating is at its worst when I'm in a hurry or anxious about getting dressed in the morning.  I always sweat badly while dressing for work or just to go out somewhere. I don't know why, but I guess I feel a certain pressure to  "look okay" so I have always been anxious about finding the right clothes that match and fit well.

I used to have nightmares as a child where I was late for school and couldn't find any clothes to put on. Each item I found to put on either didn't match, or had no top to wear with it. was too small, had a big stain, was wrinkled and dirty, etc. I would just keep putting on and taking off clothes, while getting later and later for school.  Sometimes, in the dream, my family would be going somewhere fun, and I was still in my bedroom trying to find clothes to wear. They kept saying they were going to leave without me if I didn't just come on now, and I was still in my underpants crying because I could't find clothes to wear!

I call those, "frustrating dreams" where you are trying to do something (anything important, doesn't really matter what) and every time you try to achieve your goal, something prevents you from doing what you want to do. You misplace the items needed to do it, the items needed are broken or don't work like they should, etc.

Those events cause anxiety in dreams, and in real life your subconscious feels that same anxiety every time you do certain things that make you feel the frustration or fear, and it increases the sweating even more. The more frustrated I get that my hair won't get dry with the blower due to the sweating, the more I sweat, making it take even longer until I'm late for work. which makes me even more anxious, causing more sweat. Vicious cycle.

I am considering something like the Clonidine if the CBD oil doesn't work for me.

I think anxiety plays a part in the sweating to, because i find the more i think about and worry it's going to start it does actually start. I can feel myself starting to burn up and then the feeling of water running through my hair down my neck and my face is shinning with sweat, running of the tip of my nose its just so degrading. I've got in our car before now and the heat coming from me started to steam the car windows up. I have a big wedding next week and I am getting myself into such a state over it plus its making me feel ill from the anxiety of it all. I don't normally go out anywhere other than hospital or doctors appointments, it rules my life. I am one of 7 children and I am the only one who has it, bloody fibromyalgia has a lot to answer to...

Missy7581- I was having terrible neck pain and back stiffness from a Fibro flare over the past couple weeks. I could hardly move, and even sitting still was just killing me.  I am coming off of my immune suppressants to do some new testing without them in my system. I think that pain also triggered a flare of the fibro.

Anyway, I got my CBD oil in the mail on Monday. That day was one of the worst pain days I had in a long time so I took some immediately, actually thinking more about the stopping the sweating asap than it helping the pain.

I woke up Tuesday morning with almost no neck pain (100% better!) and no back stiffness. It was the best I'd felt in weeks, and I can't remember the last time I got out of bed without back and hip stiffness  I suppose it is probably a coincidence, but I didn't do anything else different to account for the pain relief. I slept on the same pillow, same everything.

Fingers crossed that this is the answer to breakthrough pain and maybe I can stop the Tramadol, which I suspect leads to some of the increased sweating for me. I am hopeful!
