Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep
Posted , 480 users are following.
For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.
I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.
This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.
Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?
Thanks.

I have just came across this site and your post. I am a 24 year old male who for the past 2 years been looking for answers myself. No doctor has been able to find a reason. I smoked cigarettes for 12 years (heavy smoker), and a huge pot head (an 1/8 of weed a day at minimum for at least 7 years) (also a recovering alcoholic of 7 years) I have had lung function tests, MRI's, xrays, ct scan with and without contrast, stress tests, ultra sounds, sooooo much blood work. Drs have had me on so much medications to test theories, including 2 different inhalers, and about 8-9 different pills (non worked at all). i have seen over 10 different specialist, and still have very little answers. I have been told i have a very small traces of emphysema, but they push it off and say it is nothing. they have finally stopped seeing me for they say it is a mixture of acid reflux, and anexity. (I do suffer from anxiety, and have massive panic attacks)
But its not that. THERE IS SOMETHING THEIR MISSING. I have been desperate for any type of answers in this. If anyone here is able to shed some form of light.... id be so grateful. I have caused so much damage to my body i know this. I have quit every single bad habbit. now i just want to finally be done with this nightmare. It is like an elephant is sleeping on my chest 24/7 and i stand here baffled on why.

voice voice to text screwed a lot of this up and would not allow me to correct the spelling or word errors. I imagine you get the point.

The only thing that works for this mysterious illness is Benzodiazepine like Xanax, klonopin etc. I suffer from depression and anxiety and I have the same problem but some people here doesn't have anxiety or stress but Xanax or klonopin are still working for them. For some reason Benzodiazepines medications fixes this problem. It's like some kind of brain chemical imbalance that affecting the chest muscles and make them tight thus it's causing the shortness of breath.

I literally thought I was the only person who struggled with this... Though I know the crippling inconvenience of it, it's reassuring knowing I'm not alone. My "deep breath" obsession started months back. It just randomly started up & that was ALL I could think about or pay attention to at all times. It was debilitating. Especially when I would go to take a deep breath, & couldn't. Sent me into full-blown panic mode. This lasted for what seemed like forever. Until one day, I woke up & just... forgot about it. Well, just recently it started up again. Obsessed. Again. I am desperate at this point. So, I went to Wal-Mart. Bought myself an inhaler. & am now trying to trick my mind into thinking that the inhaler is solving my problem.... So far, so good. Not trying to take as many breaths. My mind is weirdly a bit more at ease. I know how AWFUL this is, so I wanted to make an account to share what could possibly be working for me.... Good luck everyone.

hey i did and ive been emailing him. great guy. it seems his trick to beating this is to resist your bodies urge to take the yawn for long enough and it finally goes away. seems pretty impossible for me though, i cant go a few days without giving in. have you tried resising the urge to take these deep breaths?

Wow can't believe you've been emailing him. Keep at it - I really feel like I've got it under control now - you need to get past the anxiety of feeling/thinking about your breath. It's not something you need to be thinking about but I know that's hard when you get a physical sensation that you are suffocating. If you can just keep sitting with that feeling of needing to take the deep breath you're subconscious will eventually disassociate from it - it really does work. Your subconscious associates anxiety with that feeling and the action to relieve it is to yawn or take a deep breath - that's what you need to get rid of. You will find you can sit with it longer and longer and then eventually you don't get the sensation at all. Obviously you still will take deep breaths during the day (and yawn) because everyone does but don't associate anxiety with it - it's normal. This whole issue is definitely anxiety related associated to your breathing (somewhere along the line you've tried to take a deep breath and haven't been able to and your subconscious has held onto it). I had tried everything including all sorts of medications and this is the only thing that has helped me. When you get that feeling to yawn/deep breath think of it as anxiety sitting in your throat - there is nothing medically wrong with you. Think of it as something tangible that you can move out of the way. Hope this helps.

thanks for the quick reply man! It was great advice you gave me saying to not always be taking the breaths, but also it natural for everyone to sometimes yawn. I realized i was forcing myself too much to not give in to it, but really i should just be going with the flow and doing what feels good and natural - not to let it dominate my mind. For a while, and still to a degree, i was consciously aware of every single breath i took, no matter what. And the more i try not to think about it, the more i think about! Such a horrible cycle to be stuck in. Still a constant struggle but its easing up a bit. If Mr Spire want all the way on the east coast i would visit him tomorow. Thanks for the reply. keep in touch

i have this too! it sucks really bad! its so bad for me that most if the time when i speak i run out of breath, horribly affecting my communication. im uncomfortable 24/7, the only rest for me from it is sleep. it feels so good to take that yawn, but at the same time it doesnt becuase i know i shouldnt be having to do it. every breath should be the same. its a cycle that has been going on for so long that i dont see it ever being broken. i just want to breathe normal, is that too much to ask? please, if anyone finds relief from this, get back to me. i have yet to find any relief
