Excessive Yawning and Constant Need to Breathe Deep
Posted , 480 users are following.
For the past few days, I've been yawning a lot, much more than average (once every few minutes I feel the need). If I'm not yawning I'm breathing in as deep as I can to get similar "satisfaction". Often I cannot get the "satisfaction" from these and so the urge grows and grows, meaning it can get quite uncomfortable. When I do manage it, the urge is back a few seconds later. This is whether I'm tired or not, almost all day.
I'm not particularly anxious about anything in particular, and get the same amount of sleep as before this started.
This also happened at some point within the past year which continued for a month or two if I remember correctly.
Does anyone have any idea what it is or how to make it a bit better?
Thanks.

Hi all
I've been experiencing these symptoms for around 4 to 5 months now and like many others, the various tests and treatments haven't revealed anything. If I'm not thinking about it, I can generally get on okay and it's better in the morning/late at night. Exercise doesn't seem to have a substantial effect in either direction.
A couple of questions.
TIA!

hi, have you managed to get to the bottom of it? i've had all the same symptoms as you described , tried inhalers and omeprazol but neither had helped. Its so frustrating i could manage to run for 4 miles without it affecting me but then sometimes going up or down stairs or even sitting watching tv it comes back.
hope your feeling better

Hi
I have been feeling very similar 2 weeks ago i suddenly woke up out of my sleep I felt like i was suffocating and constantly having to take a deep breath. I then had a panic attack and went to the hospital they told me everything was fine. The next day I felt the same but could not eat as i felt bloated and still had this suffocating feeling so went back to the hospital but they told me it was Asthma related and chest infection. They gave me antibiotics and 1 weeks later I felt the same so went to my doctor and she said it was anxiety and silent reflux. I took PPI and they are not working. This feeling is causing me to be anxious and the fact that no one is giving me an answer is even frustrating. I was just wondering if any of you have had any luck with the condition and anything you could to help because this is affecting my everyday life.

Hi flutterbypie,
I've noticed alot of the responses on here don't fit the bill, but your description is perfect for how I feel when trying to get a deep breath. Have you found any relevant help at all? its getting really annoying and uncomfortable to have to take these deep breaths every few minutes.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi everyone my name is Jesus and I am 26 years old and have been dealing with this issue maybe for about 3 months now. I personally would feel a tightness in throat and some chest pressure. I would also get this feeling after I ate which caused me to have to take deep breaths constantly because I felt like I could not get enough air. When I eventually would get enough air in would not take long before I was yawning again or trying to catch a deep breath to satisfy my need for air. When I am distracted or doing something I notice I didnt feel the need to be yawning. Also I had some trouble sleeping but thats because I have to wake up early everyday for work like 4 am. When I would sleep I would not feel this problem. It would happen a couple of minutes or maybe an hour or more after I woke up. After a couple of weeks of experiencing this I went to Urgent care because I could not take it anymore. I am a non smoker or drinker so the doctors asked if anyone at home smoked. My mom smokes like crazy so they said maybe her 2nd hand smoke was causing spasms in my throat. They gave me an inhaler which did not work so I stopped using it. The next day I went in to Primary Care and doctor said it was anxiety. She gave me an EKG test and looked at my oxygen levels and said everything was fine. She gave me anxiety meds and it just made things worse. So i stopped them. Desperate for relive I told my mom I felt like I was dying or something was wrong. She told me to take omeprazole over the counter and it would help because she said it was acid coming back up. Let me tell you she is not a doctor but she has had family with GERD and silent reflux problems before so she thought it would help. I was desperate to feel better so I did and the following day I was fine all day. It worked for a couple of days so I let my doctor know and she said she would prescribe me the meds and instructed me on how to take them. Since certain food would make my symptoms worse I cut out Coca Cola and any carbonated drinks cold turkey. I also saw all the foods that triggered acid reflux and cut them out for a month. It was the hardest decision ever but I went through with it. I lost a total of 16 pounds in a month and cut out all the foods like dairy products and fried foods for the time being and noticed after 2 weeks things got better. The only problem was that the omeprazole only worked for a while. So desperate for help I asked one of my cousins from Mexico who is a Doctor if he knew anything about what I was experiencing and he told me it was related to reflux and to have a stool test and blood test to look for Helicobacter Pylori because since the meds were not working he said it could possibly be a bacteria which is producing the symptoms and making things worse. I spoke to my doctor and she said that she would order the test to be done. Its embarrassing personally to take a stool test but I rather be sure I have done all I can to find what is wrong than live with the problem. As of today I am waiting on my results and hope to get an answer soon. I hope my experience helps and ill update any results I have or progress.

Exactly what i have from top to bottom, even the pressure build up feeling in the throat is on point! By any chance do you also feel like your nose/ sinuses are also clogged or has something in it, because that something i've been noticing lately.
Please keep me in the loop!

Hey itsnotanx... I feel more relieved that I am not the only one thinking something is up. So my test came back and I was positive for H Pylori which is a bacteria affecting the gut. My blood test came out good and thyroid test too. The only other issue was fatty liver but that's because I an overweight and something I am already working on. Xrays also came back fine for lungs. I took the 3 antibiotics they gave me along with omeprazole. Those two weeks were hard on the body. I had a mild headache on and off for the two weeks. The doctor told me it was normal because amoxcillin and omeprazole do not let the body absorb the vitamins it needs. Today 12/7/20 Is my first day finishing the treatment. I feel about 35% better but the yawning still comes and goes throughout the day but not as much. I been drinking warm teas throughout the weeks and they seem to help with the throat clearing a bit. The teas are throat coat and Chrysanthemum Floral tea. During my treatment I kept looking for answers and came across a post that talked about the affects of a Hiatal Hernia and the symptoms of it related to me alot. Throat Clearing, Hiccups after eating, Shortness of Breath, and trouble eating at times. When it comes to eating I notice sometimes in between food or with food in mouth I have to take deep breath. So some tips it gave were to catch a deep breath and hold it for 5-10 seconds then release with purred lips slowly and do it a couple of times and it did help. The other was to drink two room temperature water bottles in the morning and then wait about a minute or two and lift hands up to chest to open diaphram and stand on tippy toes then drop heals hard to try and bring stomach down in case it is a hiatal hernia. This technique caused me to burp but did help me. During the two weeks I was taking antibiotics I also went to Chiropractic since I had seen that they helped people with these symptoms. I have felt better for a couple of days but there are days I feel it more than others. There is an improvement for sure but not 100% gone. Ill keep looking to see if I find a solution and wont give up until I do. I just started probiotics after my treatment as well because antibiotics mess with good and bad bacteria. I am continuing to go to chiro as well to get adjustments and help in case it is a hiatal hernia. Let me know if you find anything that helps you.

just came across this thread i have had the same issues now for 9 months, i just woke up one morning and it was there i couldn't fill my lungs and its just never went away. Tried inhalers, anti histamines, chest xray and even had a trip to accident and emergency to get checked over. It was causing panic attacks but that wasn't what was worrying me it was the constant being short of breathe even when i felt relaxed, it was worse at night and on exertion. I have been taking Zooloft for 4 weeks now but no change to the breathing although it has helped with anxiety and panic attacks. Had my bloods taken to check thyroid so waiting on results but i feel like there must be something other than anxiety causing this.

If all other caused have been safely excluded, I would suggest that this sounds like a fairly typical case of Sighing Dyspnoea.

I've stumbled upon this forum by accident and noticed that most people had this problems for months or a few years. I've had it for almost 30 years and I gave up finding the solution..
I first started having this problem in my teens. Both my grandfathers had pulmonary illnesses so I thought it might be genetic (pneumonia and chronic asthma). I started taking all kinds of tests in a hospital. They did find some allergies, even asthmatic reaction. Spirometry test was on a low side, but still within normal. The diagnosis was allergic asthma so they gave me some pills for the allergy and an inhaler. They didn't help. I did have asthmatic attack twice in my life when I slept on a dusty pillow and it did help only in those two occasions. Anyway , I gave up on finding the solution and learned to live with it.
I did try to find some pattern and it seems that it gets worse when air pressure is lower, but I'm not even sure that's the real thing. Beside slight hypotension I don't have other diseases, I'm a moderate smoker (stupid, I know), I'm thin and I'm in my late 40's.
I sing in a chorus classical music so I know how to breathe using diaphragm. It does help when I lean forward when trying to get enough breath (or yawn). Often when I try to yawn i get a gag reflex. More than a few times almost threw up, probably because I'm forcing myself to yawn.

Finally a forum with this condition! It has been so hard for me to explain my situation to the doctors, I feel like they always think I am overreacting. I started getting this feeling last year, it comes and goes, there are no special triggers in my experience. The first time I got so scared I ended up in the ER. Checked my oxygen levels, they were great. The diagnosis was allergies. Went couple of time afterwards to my GP, still they blame it to allergies. I did spirometry test since they suspected asthma but the results of the spirometry were great, apparently my lung capacity is extraordinary, in the top 5% . I am now waiting results from a CT scan since I also started developing pain in my upper back. The last 3 weeks have been hell to be honest, I went through all possible scenarios in my head, especially when I read that shortness of breath and pain in upper back are connected with lung cancer. I am 27, I have never ever smoked but I did spend 10 years in very polluted city, so now everything is possible. I just cannot wait to get my CT results to get that off my mind. Anyway, how this condition presents in my case, is with air hunger. You know when you are running and you loose your breathing rhythm and then everything is off? Well is pretty much the same except I am not running. I may be sitting on a sofa and still trying to synchronize my breathing all while hearing my heart pounding in my chest. Then I feel the urge to take deep breath, which sometimes is not satisfactory. Like I know I have more capacity for air but just the diaphragm somehow hits a limit? This is the best I can explain it. Then my last resort is yawning, and then the magic circle starts. I am not tired, but I keep yawning. Its so annoying. I try to convince my mind to synchronize my breathing but I don't succeed, instead I start taking very fast, shallow breaths, then try to take more satisfactory deep breath and yawn. Usually when I don't think about it the breathing synchronizes eventually, but that is very hard. Like how can you keep your mind off shortness of breath? I think the natural response of the body in a situation like that is to focus the mind on the breathing. I feel shortness of breath when I am talking, when I am eating, even when I am just laying around. Sometimes is ok, sometimes not. I am physically active, I started running couple of years ago but there are days when my breathing is off and I cannot run for more than a mile. I know that physically I can, it's my breathing that is the issue. When the breathing is fine I am able to run 5 miles with no issue. I don't know how to help myself and it's frustrating. I was worried that when this happens my pulse goes up, since I can feel my heart pounding. Measured it, it's 70. Normal. One thing I did notice is that my diastolic pressure is low. Usually I am 122/64. Couple of times during the summer I almost passed out, I had 80/40. This is not a red flag to my GP, says it's normal that some people have natural lower blood pressure. If the CT scans are ok do you think I need to make some cardio examinations? Thanks to all for sharing you experiences, it actually makes it a lot easier just knowing that there are people out there with the same condition. You have no idea now many times I thought maybe I am the issue and I am overreacting, since no one can understand me when I try to explain myself. Happy holidays to all!
