Extended periods...

Hi..I just joined this group yesterday and was happy to find it!! I have been in peri for a few years now, first my periods moved closer together by a few days and got heavier with flooding, hot flashes and night sweats, then they moved farther apart and still were heavier with clotting but were a normal length of days, the last year I have been having less periods skipping a month or two and they are much lighter..I had a light five day period in May and skipped on in June, but this month I started on the tenth with light spotting that has progressed til now, nothing heavy...have had a few days of more normal period type flow but still very light with a few clots..it just won't stop though! I went to my GYN on the 18th..she did an exam and read my monthly diary of symptoms and said it is nothing to worry about..that sometimes it can go longer like this..anyone else had this experience? It worries me, which is another symptom I have..obsessive anxiety. I google my symptoms an have myself convinced I have every disease known to women!! Thankfully I have a patient hubby. <3

lori you will have every symptom under the sun my love. I'm in the peri but I don't have the periods as I'm on the Mirena this is my ninth year of having it and its due out in jan so i am dreading it. I will name a few symptoms heightened anxiety depression, feeling of doom and gloom, itching. headaches. nausea. palpitations dry mouth, irrational thoughts etc etc. I believe there are 70 odd symptoms of the menopause/peri. I have convinced my self i am having a stroke, I have heart problems and im looking for skin cancer! I can laugh about it now but for about three months i have been on antidepressants beta blockers and vitamins and natural remedies for the peri  what a wonderful privilege it is to be a women lol next time i come back im going to chose to be a man!! and its wonderful you have a patient hubby. if we didnt laugh we would cry wouldnt we x

Sue...I can relate..I have almost all of those symptoms...I Google or see a commercial on TV and then convince myself that maybe that is what is wrong with me!! I feel like I am losing my mind at times. Little things that never bothered me before now grate on my nerves. I have unreasonable anxiety and insomnia. I know it doesn't make sense the way I feel but that doesn't change that I feel that way!! I can mostly laugh about it, but there are some days I cry instead! Your reply made me smile!! Thank you for that!! Laughter and Love is what is gonna get me through this! smile Hope we both get to the other side of this sooner than later!! smile

Hi Lori. I suffered 2yrs of irreg bleeding like you, despite being on the depo contraceptive injection which had always made periods absent before. I started to get more symptoms at the early part of this year - anxiety, erratic low mood, random tearfulness, panic attacks, night sweats, intense stubborn headaches, terrible brain fog & inability to concentrate. My specialist meno gp diagnosed me with peri & started me on low dose/low risk hrt in april, & i feel much better for it. particularly the mental symptoms & headaches & the irreg bleeding has stopped. I am currently having my first "withdrawal bleed" which is expected a few days after finishing the cycled progesterone capsule. my hrt regimen is oestrogel nightly & progesterone capsules days 15-26 out of every 28day cycle (which i had to create on my calendar as had no cycle!!). I stronly recommend you see if your doc surgery has a specialist meno/well woman gp or nurse you can go & discuss your symptoms with, & talk about all the different options of hrt. You can then weigh it up for yourself if you want to try hrt for 3mths & see if that improves things for you. The other alternative is to try a low dose of an anti depressant called fluoxetine (talk to your doc about it). this particular ad many ladies on here & a friend of mine in her 50's have found it really helps to "soften" the symptoms of peri/meno. Hope this info helps hun. Lots of lovely ladies on here to chat with/ ask advice or just vent!! xxx

Thank you for your advice and kind words, looloo! I agree there are many nice ladies on here who have made me feel like I am not really losing my mind, no matter how it feels! This is day 18 of the endless flow..but it does appear to be getting much lighter and the hot flashes are not comiing as often today, so hopefully I am about at the end of the craziness at least for this cycle!! I am nervous to try any hrt because I had a blood clot in my leg a few years ago, it was not deep in the veins but superficial, but still makes me cautious...everything seems to make me nervous these days! Thank you again for making me feel normal that helps me more than you know!! smile

Its good to talk as bob hoskins used to say on the bt adverts!!! Its definately worth at least discussing hrt with a specialist doc or nurse as there are now so many options - reduced risk - topical gels, patches etc. No harm in discussing it & then weighing it all up for yourself. i intially was reluctant to try it, but my specialist meno gp spent 2 x 20min appts with me discussing it all, & i decided to try it - so glad i did as posted above-things much improved. i dont think i'd be coping well at all with my other illness at present if i hadnt started the hrt when i did in april.xxx
