Extreme pain after stem cell injections

Hi all. I had my second round of stem cells injected on Thursday (2 days ago) and still can't put weight on my right leg without excruciating pain down my thigh. Even when I'm immobile it aches, while the other hip showed no signs of any pain at all? Is this something I should be concerned about?

Can I add, I had two injections in the right hip and only one in the left.

Everyone I know who has done the stem cell injections (probably 12 people) have told me THEY Don't WORK!  It is a lot of money for nothing

I had stem cell treatment in 2015 with grade 4  osteoarthritis and FAI in both hips and had great success - to the point that I felt comfortable in getting pregnant as my hip pain was gone and mobility was incredibly improved during the following year. I ended up having twins in 2016 and found a lot of my original problems returning thanks to weight gain and the pregnancy.

This question is more about this extra muscle pain that one of the injections seems to have caused.  I've been one of the lucky ones that had a positive result from stem cell treatment - aside from what seems to be a crappy side effect of the needle right now lol

I have a question rather than a reply. Stem cells are from bone barrow and platelet injections are from centrifuged blood?  Is that correct?

Not these ones - these were adipose stem cells, from fat cells! Loads of positive results made me give it a go, and the first round was amazing - life changing even!

Where was the fat suctioned from?  Where the injections painful?  Thx for the info. I've read about it but only know people who have tried platelet injections in the knee. I really want to try something for my opposing knee from my hip replacement .

I have heard the exact same thing as far as hips. It it worked in 90% of the cases it would be covered under insurance.

My doctor is at a conference until Monday sad the pain is actually much improved today so fingers crossed it's on the way out! I've avoided pain killers as I didn't want to do more than I should, and I'm coping on panadol now smile

On the plus side, all my usual hip pain is gone, which is what happened last time! So I'm hoping for another good result!

    Suzie,

Wondering how you're doing at this point...I had stem cell therapy done Monday (today is Wednesday) for my left hip and am having a great deal of pain. My doc told me it was ok to take anti inflammatories so have taken ibuprofen for the past two days with minimal benefit. I had adipose tissue harvested from lower back, cord stem cells and all mixed with PRP. My doctor told me that the adipose cells, because of their viscosity, is what makes the procedure more painful than if I had not included the adipose cells. He felt the adipose cells contributed greatly to the success. My pain is not only at the site of the injection into the hip but a DEEP ache all the way down the leg, with my knee aching as well. But really, the whole left leg is very painful, movement and walking, sleeping...

Just wondering how long it took for your pain to dissipate.

    Thanks in advance,

    Deborah

I am in the same situation you described. Are you any better?  Did you get an explanation of what happened?

Hi! I’m sorry I didn’t reply, I missed seeing messages for some reason. How did you end up? I did have a staph infection in my bone, the full story is below in another reply if you’re interested.  Hope you ended up okay!

      Suzie (and Rebecca!),

The pain that radiated all down the leg got better about 3-4 days in but it took a while to really get better. Unfortunately I still have a lot of pain in the left hip. Just ended 2 months of PT. Hard to explain but my hip seems fused to my lower back on the left side.  They don’t have a lot of independent mobility. Going to a different doctor for prolo therapy on Thursday. He was very surprised that by 10 weeks I didn’t have an ah-ha moment of realization that the pain was gone. Starting some myofacial exercises and massage at home. Do I sound desperate?! I am. Your experience though sounds dreadful. I shouldn’t complain at all. 5 weeks in the hospital!! You’re a trooper.

When I had my first stem cell injections, the pain literally stopped the day it was done! I felt so much better and was so confident in my amazing healing powers that I decided to have another baby. That turned out to be twins and the pregnancy set me back so off I went for a second treatment using my stored stem cells. This time it was immediate pain, followed by more pain until the hospital admitted me. I’m sorry you didn’t get a great result from your stem cells! I’m sure I would have again if not for the staph lol... we used only adipose cells from my beautiful stomach fat 😂 but I won’t be doing it again. I’m scheduled for a double replacement in March so just taking pain killers and waiting it out.

And you’re the trooper! Months of pain and no relief trumps my little journey into pain thresholds lol

lol, twins followed by a debilitating staph infection? oh no, my dear, you win the tiara for torturous physical ailments! So in March you're having a double...hip replacement? I can't imagine doing a double but Jill Miller (guru on fascial massage and release) has a youtube series showing her progress hours, then days and weeks after a hip replacement. It's amazing how quickly it heals. I was hoping to delay that route. And is it next March, as in 2019? I imagine it must be. I'll try to remember to post after I have this Prolo therapy done on Thursday. What's a little more discomfort from needles going into your joint, right? It might help smile

thanks for that! I’ll check her out for sure smile and the twins came after the first stem cell treatment and before the staph lol.. so I had two one year olds and a three year old while I recovered. Crazy times... hope your treatment goes well, and I agree, we become pain warriors so a few needles are a piece of cake... 😬  I’ll keep an eye out for your post!
