Fake hips - or does my bum look big in this?

Posted , 10 users are following.

Throughout a fairly horrendous last year I never really managed to lose my sense of humour completely.

From the incident with the canula in hospital bathroom that resulted in a scene from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to complaining to my partner in the early post op days that I felt like a beached whale (I looked up to see him dangling a frozen fish fillet above saying "Come on Shamu, you can do it".

One of the funniest things was when a friend and I were both walking with our crutches when we came upon a group of kids playing some kind of war game on a bank. They turned to look at us and we both raised a crutch, primed our weapon and 'shot' them all. They kindly obliged by dying quite dramatically. They ran off after but not before asking where they could get such an awsome weapon!

I wondered if anyone else had some funny stories to share - it's not all doom and gloom is it?

That has made me laugh this morning

Humour is definitely healing for the soul

Whilst I was in hospital during the week, my best friend wrote comments on the roll of toilet paper advising me not to push, grit my teeth, you know real toilet humour.

She never told me, I found them

    Made me laugh a lot

Your right humour helps you get through some rough times.

In in the early days after my op when I was using my "grabber" to pick things up and help me dress there was one morning when I felt particularly stiff and was having trouble getting my knickers on. My friend Maggie who staying with me at the time was in hysterics at the bedroom door watching me reaching down to position the knickers on the floor I couldn't seem to lift my operated leg up enough for me to pull the knickers up when I finally did the "grabber" kept slipping when I tried to pull them up. After much swearing and cursing I did it, only realising Maggie was there when I heard a round of applause and she was finally able to laugh out loud. We still have a good laugh about it. The "stick" now that's another story...............

Christine, I bet quite a few people have some 'grabber' stories. I was getting dressed one day and laid me undies on the floor carefully and was trying balance whilst getting my useless operated leg to the right position. before grabbing. For some reason the knickers kept moving and I sat down on the bed in frustration. A few seconds later a black paw appeared from under the bed and stole my knickers completely.

Hi kate, biggrin  ... Oh, there were times that I got worried when I thought I lost my sense of humor .. fortunately those moments were short lived -

I want to share one story :

One of my girlfriend's grandsons just turned 2 years ... when I was pre-op he just started to walk - you knwo, the wobbling, falling getting up etc... After my surgery he was walking like a little Speedy Gonzales - one morning, while I was getting out of my chair, he came and looked up at me with such kind and loving eyes (pity maybe) - grabbed me by my hand and gently pushed one leg forward and then the other ... I laughed so hard and then started crying .... I will never forget that ... hmm, I wonder what he will think when I have my other hip done ....

    big hug

Well......I see outpatients in clinic at the hospital, before my op I was so immobile I'd use a walker. So, when I called my patients in the older ones often had a walker too. I'd say...'wanna race'

Now I am four weeks on and one of my girls who is 9 told me this morning that she likes me being bionic. She kisses my leg often...so cute x

I LOVE these stories thanks!  They've all given me a giggle.  "Shamu" made me cry with laughter that's the sense of humour we have in this house!  My boyfriend and I have various hippie jokes that have helped through the worst. For instance I can't make a point and storm off.... Me trying to "chase" him into the kitchen is just a joke as he only has to walk at a normal speed to seem like he's sprinting away from me.... Silly things but it keeps me "going"lol

Hah, Juliet, I don't know what I would do without my sense of humour.. I am with you on the 'chase me' - I only have to look as if I am about to tackle the stairs and they all rush for the bathroom. Mind you they could all have a shower before I got there!

Thanks Kay you made my day.

And that's a good suggestion.we all could use a kitty humor.

Hey, Ginger, any humour is good, isn't it? We have probably had a lot to cry about lately (oh okay I did have Weepy Wednesday on day 5) but seeing the funny side of things always seems good for healing.

I love all the stories, good way to start my day reading them.

It shouldn't really make me laugh but my husband will insist on walking on my stick side. Each time he trips over it I find it funny, (he just curses "the stick") he won't learn though, still walks that side. 👫👫

i have a love/hate relationship with my stick!!!!!

Oh that's so sweet thank you, you know how much that means when you've looked and felt dreadful for a while.   Hey, It's just nice to see your old face in the mirror rather than a face of pain!

Looking good girl and isn't it great to get out of that painkiller prison. My friends all said that I was grey before surgery. The Righty was very painful and Lefty will be done after Christmas but I am feeling so much more positive.

Someone made me laugh when they said at frst that they had one normal hip and one Beyonce hip after surgery - hah

I've literally de-aged in the face as I've got better! Like the 'Beyonce' hip comment!
