Farting Blood Stained Mucus

Hi All

Got quite an embarressing problem going on at the moment, and wondering if anyone can give me some advice, info or help about it.

Today, I've been having long, non smelly farts, but when I do I have to wipe my bottom as I feel a discharge occur. When I wipe my anus there is clear mucus present with spots of bright red blood present. On top of that, I have been getting quite a bit of lower abdominal and back pain, and also feeling quite lightheaded and dizzy, had some stomach bloating and burping and have a slight headache, I generally feel a bit unwell.

This isn't the first time its happened, although its not a frequent occurrence, I was wondering if anyone knew what might be going on.

I am due to see Gastroenterologist in a couple of weeks following a referral from my doctor. I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago, but in recent months my condition has been getting gradually worse, hence my doctor referring back to Gastroenterology. I have had a colonoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, loads of blood, urine and stool tests done and nothing out of the ordinary was ever found, I did have polyps removed which were completely benign.

Could this be a bad IBS flare up, or are there other possibilities why this blood stained mucus is happening. Any views or ideas would be greatly appreciated, and give me some ideas and thoughts to throw at the Gastroenterologist.

Many thanks in advance.

hey buddy ive been following this post for quite some time because of similar symptoms as the original poster. i have since been diagnosed with UC and have had 3 flare ups since (2016). Get to the doc for proper diagnosis and the right treatment. My first 2 flares I waited 6 months with no meds and the symptoms finally subsided on their own. The 3rd time i went to the doc ASAP and he gave me prednisone which cleared it up within a week. Each treatment works different on every individual. Good luck to you if it happens to be UC.

Any form of rectal bleeding should be a cause for concern and needs further investigation. After a Sigmoidoscopy and two Colonoscopies, one where biopsies were taken, my bleeding was put down to internal hemorrhoids. I did have three polyps removed which were tested and found to be benign, these can also cause bleeding. It's possible the bleeding could be caused by a fissure, but without getting it checked out it is impossible to know what could be causing your bleeding. Luckily for me there was no sign of Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns Disease or Cancer, and the likelihood that one of these conditions is causing your bleeding is remote, but still a possibility, hence the reason to get it investigated sooner rather than later. Best of luck for the future.

Doesn't really matter if it has stopped, you really should get it checked out. All you'll have to begin with is a Sigmoidoscopy, which will probably confirm my suspicions that you either have hemorrhoids or a fissure, but it could be something else that could be a lot worse. Generally It's not a bad procedure, doesn't take long, doesn't hurt much, the only pain you feel is from the air they pump inside you to expand your colon, making it easier to see any issues, but you are allowed to fart the air out which gives you relief. Worst part of it is the bowel cleansing, which is the process of eating a low residue diet for a few days before the procedure and taking a two to three day course of laxatives to empty you out. It is a messy, uncomfortable procedure all round, but it could give you the answer for your bleeding, surely that procedure and the peace of mind it could give is worth two to three days of your life!

I have the same problem. Had a Hemmorectomy in May 2022 I have polyps removed yearly and just had a colonoscopy in November was just diagnosed ulcerative colitis! Already been diagnosed with Polyps, Gastritis, Gerd, H Pylori, Acid Reflux, Diaphramic Hernia, Etc. Have very strong genes for getting colorectal cancer family members passed away from it. I'm very concerned about this! Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
