Hip replacement is major surgery. My doctor told me it will take 12-18 months for total recovery. Everyday you will feel better and be able to do more, but you should have been told that there will be good days and bad days and that healing is a process. Not a hop skip and jump. Take care.

I expected to be back at work by now!!!! I can't even climb stairs!!!!!

I'm sorry about that. I climbed stairs the second day that I was at the hospital, and did a full flight on day 4. I had an anterior approach hip replacement, not sure what you had. I am also in the USA. I am not bragging, but everyone's recovery is different. My doctor said 2 to 3 months before going back to work depending on the type of work. See how you are in 2 weeks. Good Luck!

Hi Joy, they have chopped the top of your femur off, the biggest bone in the body, then placed a metal spike in with a new ball and replaced the worn socket in your pelvis assuming yours was a standard THR. It will be some time before you can hop, skip and jump. If you broke that same bone you may just have come out of plaster......I am 6 months down the line, and today took a chance of walking up the hill to get the bus rather than call the taxi (i have not been able to walk up any incline for about 2 years) and felt fantastic that i achieved it with no pain or discomfort and at a normal speed, you will get there Joy just give it time, 8 weeks seems a long time but it is not, never compare your recovery with yesterday, look at last week and eventually last month and you really will see an improvement.

Did your physio/OT show you how to get up and down stairs?

Yes she did, I had op at Emerson green and they were amazing, I just cannot do normal stair climb, I try every day!!!

      Hi Joy

I take it you mean the way you used to climb stairs -  left foot on one stair then right foot on the next stair?  Not the way you did it when you first came out of hospital?

My job entails running up and down 5 flights of stairs 8 times over a 12hr night shift!!! Not a hope in any form at the moment!!!!!

Def not you would need to be really fit to do that - I take it there isnt a lift!?

Im Day 12 of my second hip op and after my first hip op I didnt climb stairs "normally" until at least 8 weeks as it hurt too much. Finally followed the advice of someone on this forum and did some stepping exercises (I used my Wii fit step) a few times a day and held on to the back of a chair to help my balance. After a couple of days give or take I tried the stairs just going one or two stairs in the normal way and then building up to the full flight by the end of the week. Taking it slowly the pain eased and then finally went.

Not sure though if I could ever manage 5 flights x 8 times a day I dont think Ive been that fit in a very long time!!!??

What makes you feel more crippled now than before? I think the most valuable advice I have found in this forum is that everyone's recovery is different but we share many similar obstacles. That being said, it is comforting to have the support of my fellow hippies.
