Feel like I'm relapsing on Naltrexone

Hi All,

Been doing really well for the last 5 months on Nal, a slow but progressive cutting down of the alcohol.

However the last 3 weeks it has been going up again :-( not sure why.

Naltrexone has killed my urges and ability to drink wine, I actually dislike the taste and struggle to drink it, however I have now switched to vodka to avoid this issue -.-

I find Naltrexone doesn't work as well with spirits and I can still easily drink half a bottle of vodka in one night while on Nal. I really want to get this down. I'm also back up to drinking four nights a week instead of two.

Don't get me wrong this is still an improvement but after 6 months almost on Nal i was hoping to be doing better and  be more stable with drinking less nights.

I can still easily drink 10-15 units per night and suffer a blackout.

Do you think upping the amount of Naltrexone will help me? I'm struggling and feel like I'm going backwards

I just started on Naltrexone about a week ago. I have been completely abstinent for 2 weeks. This has been helpful as I also have been a wine/vodka person. I am really committed to 0 consumption. So you really don't feel that euphoric buzz anymore? I am afraid to even try.

Sorry for waiting this Steven but I was just wondering how you are. Did it work? Less drinking? Claus

    Hi everyone,

Is there a private FB group devoted to the Sinclair Method? I just started taking 25 mg of Naltrexone and I think I am having an allergic reaction. My lips and front upper gum area are numb and tingly, major thirst, itchy tingly skin, excess urination (not dark) and itchy eyes. I feel sick. It has worked, however, as I have not wanted to drink at all. The thought of it makes me sick, actually. I am worried I may hurt myself due to withdrawal because I do not want to drink and I was drinking heavily, like 2-6 glasses of wine per night, depending on night, with occasional no alcohol per night. Should I lower the dose so I can taper and not feel ill from withdrawal? Thanks

Hi dawnybb, you definitely need to tell your doctor and quit taking it until you do.  It sounds like you might be allergic but he/she could tell you that.  Good luck.

The symptoms you describe sounds like you need immediate medical advice

Fear of quitting stops people from quitting...You will die from drinking if you do not quit drinking anyway. The feeling of a lose lose situation, magnesium helps prevent the shakes, prevent seizures and most people are deficient according to my nutrition class also b vitamins are low in alcoholic or coffee drinkers . When you drink you pee out most vitamins nutrients in the body thus causing you to feel very ill. Milk thistle protects the liver and makes me feel better also. I learned that from reading ingredients in a liver detox box from Walgreens for $40 but bought the main ingredient for $6.

Does Naltrexone quell the sense of pleasure for anything else while on it?  Like sex?    Or does it just target alcohol or drugs?  Asking for a family member.

It seems to depend on the individual, but as far as I recall, engaging in other endorphin-releasing activities in general should be delayed until the medication has largely worn off. That is the premise of "Selective Extinction" wherein one waits till about 48 hours after the last dose to participate in endorphin-releasing activities, as your opioid receptors will be upregulated at that time and you'll get an extra "blast" out of a good workout, sex, watching a really good comedy, eating spicy foods, etc.

I do not like Naltrexone and quit it after 1 week of feeling sick...I didn’t drink because I felt hungover constantly..I would rather figure out my own way without drugs personally. I was never a daily drinker but do binge drink mixing spirits with wine and beer( whatever was available until it was gone or I passed out) I had my first drink of beer at 10yrs old landed myself into foster care so was sober until 17 when I married a alcoholic. My rule was never drink 2 days in a row and never first thing in the morning to aviod complete dependency on it. As I aged it became a every Friday binge drinking which would make me so sick that Saturday was slept off and pizza, vitamin water, and magnesium stops the shakes Andy hangover cure. Thus continuing the cycle next week. I prefer natural help magnesium, b-vitamins. This week I’m focusing on staying sober and using what worked in the past.

Hope you are ok? I know this was posted 9 months ago, but my concern is the warning of Naltrexone and alcohol poisoning! That’s good it made you dislike the wine and that’s what it was suppose to do... switching to spirits is dangerous. The point is that exactly switching to vodka to fight the drug helping you ..,can kill you. Spirits go faster in your system so you wouldn’t be able to tell that the medicine is working or not and just black out (poison yourself).

My personal philosophy in life is “ If you do the same thing you will get the same results” Do something different...I quit cold turkey smoking/drinking by creating a sanctuary for myself lots of plants ,soothing sounds, and created a schedule for going to the gym at 5am and sleeping when cravings were at worst reading or video games are a distraction also. I relapsed when I had the pink cloud effect feeling so great and strong that I can handle one or two(self lying ultimately). You learn every time you quit and mess up. Change you prospective on life , get creative, garden or staying busy helps me but don’t self reward with a drink it’s a trap and you know it.

Glad it works for you! You are very lucky. Doesn't work for me nor the 80%+ of real alcoholics. Only TSM works. Read the book: The Cure for Alcoholism ...it is a brain disease and can be cured like other illnesses. You'd never tell a breast cancer patient, so no meds for you, go to the gym and work out that cancer.

I had my first drink at age 10 but didn’t fully develop a habit until 17 yrs old and married a 22 yr old that drank. I quit during 3 pregnancies smoking and drinking like it was nothing somehow. I was always a every other day or only Friday heavy drinker. My biggest binge was 14 hours of drinking at a casino and 4 packs of smokes. I have had a seizure drinking less but faster pace. I have put myself in rehab.I always kept my rules never drink daily and always after 3pm to have a drink thinking that would keep me from becoming dependent on alcohol. I never fully quit though most was 30 days using my comment above which would have worked if not for falling for the pink cloud effect. Everyone is different so are levels of alcoholism . Naltrexone didn’t work for me just felt hungover sick without the fun in drinking part. I would rather just quit than take that stuff omg that sucked. My way was more pleasant and possible for me to stick to I think. So I shared my idea hoping it might help someone that’s all

My brother beat cancer with carrot juice. Yes exercise releases endorphins that give you that good high on life feeling it helps.Making excuses only worsens the problem. Your brain is like a plant you reap what you sow into it disease or not.

I’m going to get pregnant to quit and not start up again. With my ex husband I only drank again out of childish revenge from when he was drinking while I was pregnant. I was young and dumb with him for 10yrs. Now things will be different remarried been together 7 yrs now going to have a child together to straighten myself up. I’ve cut back to 1 day a week but obviously will quit on my own.

I also was EXTREMELY sick from the Nal at the normal dosage. Luckily, my psychiatrist understands how I process meds and lowered my dose to start to 12.5, and after a month I increased to 25 mg. I've been on this for over 2 months and it is totally working for me. I still feel a bit sick, but better than drinking too much. If I hadn't have had this excellent advice, I wouldn't be successful and here having this conversation. Please go to a specialist and ask about trying again. People here have good intentions but they are not doctors.

Good post Haddix - I am a strong believer in carrot juice.  It removes all inflammation from the body.  Should be drunk daily really (albeit watch the sugar content if diabetic).
