Hi all, I have this problem for 3 years. I'm 51 and over the past 5 years have completed my menopause. This happens almost every night to me - the only thing that stops it is for me to get a snack to eat. Do not eat sugary snacks! I use a bit of milk with a banana or some oats. It must have something to do with the metabolism or blood sugar. No idea, all I know is that my body wants that food in order to decompress and get into a sleep rhythm. It's very annoying. Hope this helps someone! Best to all.

My anxious son said he has the same thing. He downloaded an app that monitors sleep. He also has a pulse oximeter that measures oxygen levels while he sleeps and said it never went below 97, which means his breathing is normal.

Not sure what medication you are on, but when I was on Saphris, it caused this sensation. I got taken off of it for this reason, rather quickly.

i have experienced this several times when i had high anxiety a few years ago. it's very scary and i didn't know what was happening. but it gradually went away! try to do deep breathing and if possible, meditate before bedtime.

I have been experiencing the same sensation for only about two days now and I am already so miserable. I only got one hour of sleep today and it was spread out from 7 AM until 9 PM that I got that one hour total. (It is now 11 PM where I am)
I am currently taking care of my two nieces and nephew pretty much all by myself and have been for months, prior to this I was in a terrible home situation so I am assuming that the two of these combined are the stress and anxiety factors that have caused me to experience what all of us are. My heart rate has been rapid for about two weeks now, did anyone go through something similar to this? Every time I start to fall asleep I feel a jolt-like sensation in my chest area and immediately open my eyes despite the facts that I have tried not to. I am exhausted, quite scared and very anxious. How did you all help this problem? Any advice is much appreciated, I feel like I am going crazy and I am only two days into this. I do not want to have to deal with this for much longer.

hey Carissa,
you need to get yourself some zopiclone, its pure hell i know even now i still need it now and again to get any sort of rest. Zopiclone rest isnt brilliant but you will feel a little more rested than none. go for walks during the day if you can to get rid of some of the stress and keep your mind occupied. its an incredibly tough life living with this s**t, as if life isnt already hard enough. take care.

Okay so couple of weeks ago, I was experiencing shortness of breath, fast heart beat, chest tightness. I went to the ER at least 4 times in 3 days. The last visit, I demanded EKG, Chest XRays, and Labs. Everything came back normal and was sent home with prescribed anxitey meds. Finally after 8 days, it went away for 3 weeks or so. Then again, i wasnt having chest pains but i was having shortness of breath and fast heart beat. I have noticed it lasts about 7-8 days but two nights ago, when i was falling asleep, i felt like i forgot to breath and woke up gasping for air and my heart was beating fast. It happens multipe times throughout the night and im scared it could be my heart.... I am so scared of night time now. Could this still be anxitey??? Any tips? I have been taking melatonin at night to help me sleep, only helps sometimes...
