So if it’s youre falling asleep and then you stop breathing then it could be transitional sleep central events. Like if this only happens say twice a night then you fall asleep stay asleep and wake up and go about your day like nothing happened and you’re not feeling so tired.

22male here, 3rd year with this problem. This is the only source, where I could find some information about this because I`ve already checked my thyroid, lungs, heart, adrenal fatigue, nose and throat and etc... Any of these doctors could not identify the problem. Last week I tested my blood and found out that there is a huge lack of vitamin D in my body (I am from Europe, here in Lithuania we don`t have a big amount of sun). So, last night (6th day when I am using vitamin D), all my breath stopping sensations turned into very strong hypnagogic jerks. Now I realize that the problem is not my Vitamin D. I see that the answer could be pure L glutamine so I will try to use it and I will share my results smile

hello, I am experiencing this and feel so far disturbed. one cause that I suspect is a rare side effect to an antihistamine. curious to know if anyone had felt the same.

I just bought a sleep easy supplement, I took it last night and I still had the issue, but for a shorter period of time. would 2 pills be too much? I'm worried it'll affect my other diabetes medications. this supplement contains magnesium, l-theanine, melatonin, valerian.

This has been happening to me lately and I noticed alcohol worsened it so I stopped with nightly wine. Its still happening and regardless of working out and eating right i still have panic attacks along with this unrealistic fear of falling asleep. its the feeling of not breathing that scares me. I want to see a doctor but dont want any pills or meds.

    I am just experiencing this.

For the last 3 nights just as I'm dropping off and in the middle of the night I have been woken abruptly thinking i cant breathe.

    Its so scary.

Ive just got into a hot lavender bath hoping it will calm me a little.

I'm under massive stress at the moment too and keep putting it down to that but its really worrying me as I'm living alone.

I have been dealing with this problem for about 9 months now. Just as I start to drift off, bam ... I'm awoken by the urge to take a breath. Not a gasp, just a breath. Sometimes this goes on for hours, 20-30 times before I can sleep. I have found that Melatonin is helpful in minimizing this issue, but does not fix it entirely.

I'm a 35 year old male. When it first happened it was very scary and persistent. After 4 nights of having it where I averaged 2-3 hrs of sleep each night, I ended up at the ER. The Doctors were perplexed and put it down to anxiety, post nasal drip from alergies, and GERD, which I have struggled with a bit in the past. Between then and now, I have also had an Echocardiogram and chest x-ray with no issues found. I went for a sleep study and I do have mild-moderate sleep apnea that I am in the process of getting an oral appliance for.

After taking several different prescriptions for anxiety and GERD, I'm still battling this sleep onset breathing issue. Some weeks it hardly happens, and then it gets bad again. I have also tried the following supplements with no success: Vitamin D, Magnesium, B12, L-Lysine, and Ashwaganda.

After reading some posts on here, today I ordered L-Glutamine and Amino Acids. I am so hopeful these help, but I'm not going to get too excited.

My question for others on this forum is, do you have any other symptoms that seem to coincide with this particularily disturbing issue? Within a week of developing this, I also began having a strange sensation in my throat, with frequent throat clearing. Also, now when I take a deep breath, I get a brief pins-and-needles type sensation as if I just over-oxygenated my system. Lastly and most disconcerting, I have what I believe to be flare-up of optic neuritis of my right eye that occur days before the sleep-breathing issue gets bad. I have been to an opthomologist for this and they said it is dry eye and an astigmatism, but I have my doubts.

Any feedback, similar experiences, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I will check in if I have success with the L-Glutamine and Amino Acids.

I forget to breathe when i'm falling asleep too. I also get a sensation in my throat, it feels like there's pressure on it/its constricted but it's not because I can breath normally. I had a sleep study done for Apnea which came back normal.

I know its anxiety that's causing mine but I'm finding it hard to break out of it.

Tonight I'm so so tired but the forgetting to breathe thing is stopping me from sleeping again.

Ive suffered this same thing for two years, i have had every test under the sun, heart, lung, ct's, unltra sound, mri's, ive checked my spine amd neck, done sleep studies now have c pap mschine which helps abit but issue is still there i feel like i mask it abit with machine, ive had every blood test fecial samples, urine tests

i appreciate everyones in put into this situation we are all dealing with,

i believe anxiety plays a part in this, but

My question for everyone is do you only feel it in bed when falling asleep that terrible ferlinh just as you dose off that you are jerked awake and your body feels empty of breath OR ALSO do you sometimes feel it when out and about or work or walking around, like you are slightly out of breath

i feel sometimes like im having to remind myself to breath even when im awake and i too also feel like something is causing discomfit in throat area like tight , aswell as epegastic area/ xiphoid (bottom of sternum area) i feel very tight through middle into back like someone is holding something in there very tight which i feel is causing my ultered breathing rythme! plus my muscles in back and spine get so sore

Anyway i see some of these posts are old so if any one has any updates or helpful information i would be greatly appreciated.

hey, i am experiencing all of these symptoms. they've been going on for about a month now. would like to talk to you further about this.

      Hi Rudi,

The symptom of tightness under your sternum really resonated with me. I have definiteley noticed that symptom with this and wondered if it could be a paresis of the diaphram muscule or something. I was actually doing quite well until recently. I caught covid-19 which caused another flare up of eye pain and bluriness, and then came the sleep onset breathing issues again. Feels like I can't win 😦

    Yes Entie1984,

I do experience forgetting to breathe while I'm drifting off to asleep that that has made me terrified of allowing myself to sleep.

I talked to my doctor about that and asked if it could be sleep apnoea, but was told that sleep apnoea is only about stopping breathing while asleep.

I've started to doubt that, though, as my google search revealed a number of people with the same experience as you and I.

I've since been diagnosed with Asthma, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Attacks, Depression and Anxiety and I also believe I'm Aspergers (or Autistic Spectrum Disorder - High Functioning) although I haven't been officially diagnosed with that. i don't believe I have a clinically significant level of OCD and don't have BiPolar.

I've experienced childhood sexual abuse, childhood neglect, adult domestic violence (as a male) from 3 abusive relationships (with female partners) and the almost total alienation of three of my children (each child from a different relationship). - So, I'm self-educating and an activist for domestic violence seeking to eliminate gender discrimination in the area.
