Feel unwell and operation tomorrow

Morning everyone
Just need a bit of advice really. Someone at work has been unwell recently and this last couple of days, I have been suffering with a bit of a cough, cold and sore throat. I'm really fed up and worried because I am usually quite healthy. Trust it to be the week of the operation! Anway, as my left hip revision operation is tomorrow (18th March), do I need to let the hospital know or turn up at my arranged time? I'd be really grateful for a bit of advice.
I finished work Tuesday, and Wednesday and today is annual leave, so I did well staying in work so long. I wish I had left work a couple of weeks ago now because maybe I wouldn't have picked up this bug!! I did mention to the person not to be round me because of having an operation soon (fell on deaf ears)!
Anyway, I also want to say how brilliant this site is and I think you are all wonderful people and doing so well with what you are all going through. I wish this site had existed when I had my hip resurfacing operations back in 2005 and 2007. At least now, I feel more prepared and more knowing about things and won't be afraid to speak up if I feel things aren't right!!!
Hope everyone has a good day.

Do you have to phone later to make sure there is still a bed available? If so, I would mention it then.
They will take your temperature, blood pressure and pulse on admission anyway and decide if you are fit anough for the anaesthetic.
When I was in hospital most of the nurses were sneezing, coughing and spluttering with the various lurgies. I thought I would probably pick something up in there.
I hope everything goes ahead for you. It would be so disappointing for it to be cancelled now when you are all ready to go.
All the very best and let us know what's happens either way.

Thanks very much for your reply. Coincidently, the hospital actually made a courtesy call earlier reminding me to come into ward 15 at the hospital at 10:30 am tomorrow morning!
Also, you have made me feel better and put my mind at rest really, because I'm sure if they had any concerns, they wouldn't go ahead. I do actually feel a bit better in myself as the day has gone on. I'll let you know how things go. As I have often read, see you on the other side!!
I'm glad you're doing well. It's lovely to hear people's recovery stories!
Best wishes.

PS. I have seen lots of people have the Birmingham hip re-surfacing, and then need a full hip 10 years later. Is this the norm ? Does the re-surfacing only last 10 years ? the surgeons seem to claim the full hip replacement SHOULD last 25 years now...
Best Wishes,
Mark

Thanks for the advice. I will turn up and hopefully all will go ahead. I'm feeling a bit better now so that's a good sign eh!
With regard to the hip resurfacing. Way back when it was new and aimed at younger, fitter and active patients, it was an amazing thing, however, because it was new, there was not much in the way of research. I did hear back then that they would last 7-10 years, but also have heard someone has had theirs for 25 years so far, which is amazing. Lots of other people have had theirs for many years with no complaints.
The trouble I've had was that the metal on metal in my left hip was rubbing, causing a metallosis mass, I have high levels of chromium and cobalt in my blood because of this, plus the joint has loosened, so unfortunately I need hip revision (conversion from hip resurfacing to total hip replacement).
i won't deny i am really scared but also hopeful because my quality of life has deteriorated a lot, so in a way, looking forward to being fixed and getting my life back and looking forward to a lovely future!!!
Have had hip resurfacing done? I too have heard total hip replacements should last 25 years no problem. They are a very, very successful operation.
Best wishes.

I was diagnosed with a hip problem (osteophytes) 6 years ago, but as I do not need pain killers, my Dr advises me to wait for the total hip replacement and is against the Birmingham hip due to it's short window of working (!); he says, when I'm in pain I'll know it's time to get the new hip. I get X-Rayed every year and speak to the specialist, but my exercises seem to be holding the inevitable off a while longer yet.
I have a much reduced rotational movement of my left hip, I can still kiss my right knee, no problem at all, but can't get my lips within 30cm of my left knee, the joint just hits a brick wall....no pain, just movement stops !
Because of this I walk with a terrible limp, but I still cycle, ski every year, walk the dogs for miles. If I go mountain walking in the Lake District, I take a few co-codemol 30mgs, but only as a precaution.
Best of luck for the operation, everything will go well, it is a very common problem now, and keep us informed, the good and the bad days, you know the Dr's only do this to make you better.

Good luck today - I hope the surgery will not be canceled as this waiting time is the worst - once your admitted, the only thing to do is surrender - taking deep breaths and go with it -
Sending you light and healing and looking forward to your first post-op post !
in loving embrace

Many thanks for your message. I really liked the 'surrender' bit! I tried my best to be calm. Unfortunately, the operation got cancelled due to problems in the operating theatre. Something to do with a valve and the temperature dropping. I was in my gown and everything! I wasn't the only one - others facing major surgery were cancelled as well. It would be over and done with by now. I'm not going to unpack my cases just in case. Anyway, I'm trying to keep positive.
Speak to you soon and hope all is ok with you. Pammy.

Thanks so much for your message. I was going to message you back this morning but things were so busy! Anyway, the operation got cancelled because of a valve fault in the operating theatres and the temperature being too low. I was all ready, had blood tests - didn't get the stockings on though. All that build up eh!
Anyway, I've been told I may have another date within 2 weeks. I'm not going to let myself get all worked up - its' not worth it.
Hope all is going well with your post recovery. Keep up the good work! Pammy. x

No, it's not worth getting worked up. My mum used to say everything happens for a reason.
We're all here for you when the time comes.
