FEELING ALONE...

Hello All.  I am 50 yrs old (young) and am having a bad time with peri-menopause.  We moved from South Africa to the UK last year and being new to the country have not made any real friends yet.  My whole family is back home.  I am finding it very difficult getting medication from my GP and realise that the UK is much stricter than SA.  About twice a year a get a very, very heavy period for about 3 weeks, with clotting.  Back in SA I was prescribed Tranexamic and it worked.  Last week my GP gave me my first prescription in the UK for 18 tablets.  The meds worked, but the bleed has come back.  My GP now says I cannot have more???  I went to my local Boots and the pharmacist said he can only give it over the counter for people aged 18 to 40!!!  I am at my wits end.  Can anyone recommend other over the counter meds?  My GP is also wanting to stop my meds for anxiety, which I've been on for 15 years.  I am battling to understand the system here as surely quality of life is best.  Help :-)

    Hi Jen

how are you today, i was thinking about what you said about Docs in UK and prescriptions, yes many times in the past when i lived there, a prescription would be the minimal tablets ever, not the full box like you may have got in SA and like I get in Spain... but its a different system in UK, here in Spain I pay for healthcare, always private for me, plus i have no choice, maybe the Tranexamic you have been using, they may find high risk med in UK so they count them out, its for excessive bleeding isnt it, and also used during surgical procedures... in my early peri I had heavy bleeding Jen from time to time, just flooded out of me, but didnt last three weeks... ' better out than in' maybe you need a check and ultra sound to check all okay...

Bupa in UK although private, also do consultations and treatments for people, on a private basis with out signing up, ( or use to) thats always an option, they have gyny experts, or a well woman clinic is there any of those in your area..

good luck Jen,  lets hope your peri is nearing the end, ( mine is now after 10 year journey) what else do you take for your peri? Hrt or natural, you may need something to ease the symptoms.

my old UK doc use to do general medicine and homeopathic, his homeopathic also worked for me, during an ovarian cyst i had that wouldnt disperse... good luck what ever road you choose, they will be help out there. Jay xx

Morning Jay - thanks for your concern.  I read my post this morning and thought - what a wuss - lol.  I was feeling a little down last night.  I had an exam before leaving SA and my uterus is "thick" due to menopause and that's why the heavy bleeding.  Wish I could buy a new one on ebay!  I am going to investigate BUPA as someone else mentioned them.  I started my periods at 11, so it can leave anytime SOON!  Have a good day xxxx

Absolutely understand how you're feeling. I moved away from all my friends and family a few years ago and haven't managed to make any new ones really as my work takes me away from home alot. No one to go through this horrible time with is hard but the ladies here are all great and there's really good advice to be found. My GP even pointed me here to get help to start with, now I'm telling him! You've already seen how many of us are on line and fed up too smile

    Welcome to the group smilesmile

Hi Jen. I struggled with periods so bad that I was constantly anaemic. I had tablets for a while and then I was advised I could have my womb lining treated. It would stop periods and was a small procedure with no after effects. I ended up having to have a hysterectomy at 45 years old so never had the treatment but it might be worth asking a doctor. Definitely change gp though as this one doesn't sound very helpful. There are some really good ones out there, mine goes for quality of life first every time.
