feeling dispondent

I have been counting the days - hours even until my THR on the 3rd August. I had my pre-op on Monday. Got a call from the hospital this afternoon saying that my HB levels are a little low (10.7 ) and that I need and 'infusion' not sure what of, waiting for GP and anesthetist to call back, and that surgery is likely to be postponed - for up to 5-7 weeks as that's how long it will take for infusion to work. I thought it would be immediately, and anyway, I am only borderline low - I am always like that so is my Mum and my grandmother was - its normal for us. Anyone else had such a problem. I'll be absolutely gutted if its cancelled. I am on max pain relief - but no relief and zero Quality of Life at the mo. cant walk more than a few feet, can't sleep, sit, stand! I'm sure some of you can relate to all that!

Your Hb result is indeed borderline low. During surgery there will be some blood loss expected. My own went from 12.9 to 10.9. If your blood loss was equivalent your Hb level would be down to around 8.7 which is anaemic. This would hamper recovery so they need to get your level up before surgery.

I do understand but I was hoping that because they had to postpone surgery for  a further 6- weeks due to a steroid injection I had in the joint to keep me going on Holliday they might just give me some blood on the table - I know there are risks to that though! I’m just desperate!

Hi Nikki, I was worried silly they would cancel as I was in so much pain. I got to the day of the op and they said ‘Why are you amaemic’? I had not got a clue why. Anyway they gave me a blood transfusion immediately after the op and then a drip. Also tablets. Thank goodness they did not cancel, you must be devastated.

I am beyond gutted. I have apt with Gp tomorrow when iron results should be back - but I suspect op  will be postponed a further 3 months. I will be bedridden by then for sure!

They normally want to wait six months after a steroid injection to clear the body ready for surgery.

I really know how you feel. I was strung along by incompetent GP and rheumatologist. I was in a wheelchair when I actually went for surgery. I was ready to buy a one way ticket to Switzerland in the end!

That's what I thought as my sister had her knee op planned and some boso gave her a steroid pain relief jab and her consultant now says she can't have the op for minimum of 6/12 months, not good but they did explain why and it was a good reason so she's now back on waiting list and can't walk

I think they are worried about infection and also healing. My GP told me about it as I was in such pain but she said it would actually slow down the timing for my surgery if I had an injection. Your sister must be really annoyed to say the least.

She's a bit miffed to say the least especially as it's had zero effect and she is now struggling to walk so has been given crutches, if I'm honest she is a bit overweight as well so she's not helping herself and her GP has suggested she lose some weight to help not just now but after op and possibly during, isn't it rubbish when you think their going to help and don't

I really feel for her. I am rubbish with crutches. Also it is difficult to lose weight when you are having trouble moving about anyway. Once she has had the op she really should feel like a new person though.

I SO relate! I've had both hips replaced. Right one last September and the left 4 weeks ago. But it took forever! I was 1 week away from having my first hip replacement and BAM! I brake my ankle in 2 places and dislocated it. Hip replacement canceled for 7 months! I finally recovered, rescheduled my hip surgery, went in to do my blood work and when my surgeon calls me to give me the results he tells me my surgery is postponed because I'm severly anemic. That my levels should be around 20 before surgery. Mine was at 2. I had to have 2 iron infusions before I would be able to go ahead with the surgery. They rescheduled my surgery a month out. THEN they call me 2 weeks before my surgery date and tell me they are sorry but my surgeon was going to be out of town at a conference the day of my surgery so they are rescheduling me AGAIN for another month out! I was feeling pretty deflated by that point. But I finally got my surgery! And it was sooooo worth the wait! Even with all that delay and disappointment.

You need your body to as healthy and as strong as possible before surgery so you can heal and recover nicely after surgery. So don't let it get to you if you end up having to postpone. Do whatever you have to do to ensure a successful surgery and recovery. It will be worth it!

    Best wishes!
