Feeling hopeless about acid reflux. What next?

Hi all,

I started getting heartburn back in January and it has slowly escalated into pretty much constant heartburn. I've already had an Endoscopy which came back clear. I've tried Omeprazole, Esomeprazole and Ranitidine. I'm currently on Lansoprazole which actually seems to be making things worse. I'm also trying DGL Liquorice tablets as well as Aloe Vera Juice and a homeopathic mixture of Nux Vomica and Coffea. I also take Peptac liquid 3 times a day and the doc has also put me on Domperidone. If anything, I seem to be getting worse. Surgery terrifies me but I'm at the point where I'm rapidly running out of options. What can I try next?

Hi Violet, are you in the UK or abroad? How are you getting on now? Any improvements or changes to medication since you posted this?

    hi all,

just wanted to share this with you all. from the time i first wrote here, i have improved greatly. i am now eating normally again including some of the trigger foods and have no problems.

initially, an alkaline diet helped me somewhat but i would still get some acid around my throat. what seems to have really helped is my exercise regime. i exercise now everyday for a minimum of one hour and often more. however my exercises are low impact so i can do them for longer.

i think possibly any kind of exercise that is not too vigorous should help, whether you prefer swimming, brisk walking etc. think one has to do it daily and keep to it. if any of you try it pl let me know if it helps.

I was diagnosed with acid reflux in June.Tried all the OTC meds, TUMS made me ill. As you can imagine I was afraid to eat and lost 12 lbs.

After searching the internet I found a video which described what the esophagual sphincter does and how it works. She recommended a bland diet for five days. Chew thoroughly making it easier to pass thru your sphincter into the stomach.

She suggested a specific honey called REALLY RAW HONEY twice daily.

i was so desperate I immediately went to Whole Foods and found it. That evening before bed I took 1tsp and slept all night. Amazing stuff, The following morning I could speak and sing normally.

I continued taking this raw honey twice daily in the morning and bedtime. I foIlowed this diet  for 5 days. I'm astonished to report I'm completely acid reflux free.

Raw honey has valuable healing properties. It has never been heated or filtered. Most commercial honeys are pasturized with no health benefits.

The antacid industry wants us to believe this is a lifelong disease. They're making billions off our suffering.

    Hope this helps.

Hi Violet...Did you know that gluten can be a trigger for acid relux? I wish I'd known that 15 years ago when I first had to start on omaprezole. I took it for about 8 years and totally ruined my digestive system as a result. I finally decided to stop taking it and discovered that no I onger had acid reflux because by then I'd discovered that I'm gluten sensitive and was on a gluten free diet. Unfortunately because of my low stomach acid, I now have a hiatus hernia with the misery that entails. I have discovered that most ailments we get are caused by a food intolerance of one kind or another. Gluten is the biggest offender, followed by eggs and dairy. I much rather go the dietary way than resort to unecessary surgery. best of luck!

Hi, I've been through a similar journey and seem to be cured, so maybe a bit of info on how I did it may help. I've had terrible reflux for about 4 years. The acid ate the enamel off my teeth and my throat, gums, oesophagus, and lips were constantly burning and I was kind of desperate. I saw a naturapath who advised taking melatonin to tighten the oesophageal Sphincter to stop the acid leaking, and it worked, until I had a bad crash on my mountain bike and the acid returned again. No idea why. Google Acid Reflux- Melatonin. Some people are getting great results. After the crash the melatonin wouldn't work anymore. I tried everything but eventually had to go on PPI's and the dose kept creeping upwards. I saw a chiropractor and that helped a bit. Acupuncture definitely helped get rid of the stomach discomfort as well as soothing my tortured soul smile Went on a bland, mostly vegan diet. I noticed stress had a detrimental effect on my gut so got into mindfulness meditation and that helped heaps. But I still had the problem and my specialist told me flat-out that I either have Fundoplication surgery or stay on PPI's for the rest of my life. I had to go off the PPI' cold turkey for more tests and remember about this time I remembered how good the herb comfrey had been to me in the past. It helped save a badly broken leg once as well as helped heal numerous injuries and helped me in times of sickness. I started taking about 4 leaves of comfrey a day about 4 days before going off the PPI's. Well, long story short, I went off the PPI's expecting the worst, but nothing happened. In fact for the first time in years I felt great. I cancelled the tests and decided to go on intuition instead. I'd tried to cut back a little on the PPI's a month or so before but got really bad rebound so something was very different now. It's about a month since I stopped taking the meds and I still have a little acid in my mouth, but so little that if I didn't know what to look for, I wouldn't know it was there and it gets better every day. The only things I've done differently lately were to change my acupuncturist and start taking comfrey again. There's been a lot of scaremongering regarding comfrey, but if you read the research you'll see that if the same criteria was applied to potatoes, tea, alcohol, and a whole raft of western drugs, then they would be banned too. The big problem with comfey is that it works so well. And once you've planted some, you've got it for life. Check out both sides of the comfrey story and make up your own mind. I noticed that people on the negative side were for the most part just parroting info they'd heard second or third hand but hadn't done any actual research themselves. Welcome to the internet.

Meditation has shown me that I carried a lot of tension in my stomach and helps to me to cultivate peace of mind which in turn keeps my gut from playing up again.

So to summarise.........bland mostly vegan diet, a good acupuncturist, meditation, melatonin and comfrey, not in any order.

Cheers and good luck on your journey. I've learnt so much from mine.i, I've been on a similiar

Have you tried D-Limonene?  The studies I've seen showed dramatically positive results for 90% of reflux sufferers who took it. Some people only need to take a capsule every other day for a few weeks, and they go into a long period of remission.  It didn't work that well for me, but it definitely helped. I'm going to try upping the dosage, since they'e found no problems with larger doses.  It's not expensive, about $12 for a bottle if you get the Jarrow brand.  Take it on an empty stomach.  Good luck!

No, not for me.  But I'm a weirdo and very few of the things that work for other people seem to work for me. I've got zinc carnosine coming, and if that doesn't work, I'll try Iberogast.  I have had some luck with a combination of Tri-salts and apple cider vinegar.  That makes things tolerable, but I'm hoping to do more than that.

Somac would be most effective and Zantac. Yoghurt is good followed by bitter melon and cabage (boiled).  Meat is bad for stomach health also no cheese or oily foods. Some say defac green tea suppressed acid. There are many alternatives sounds like you have a bacteria causing your condition, my friend has it too. I get relief from indigestion by drinking red wine.

Think I'll follow the red wine tip! Sounds inviting!
