Feeling unsettled - surgery on Tuesday

Posted , 15 users are following.

Hi fellow hippies. My surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, posterior left THR. I have been running around getting everything done and prepared as best I can. Then it hit me today that they will be taking part of my own body out sad and replacing it with a foreign hip. It just made me feel a little strange, a little sad and a little scared. Did any of you feel that way? I know that this is a wonderful thing to remove all of the pain but it still felt strange today. Love you all more than I can say. Thank you all for being here for each other - Cindy

    Hi Cindy

I can totally understand your thoughts.  I was the same. A foreign object in me is difficult to comprehend. I can say though that you will soon forget all about this once your new hip is in and you are using it.  The only slight apprehension I had was when I saw my X-ray at my 6 week check.  I got a bit anxious about seeing that and it was weird.  I am taking a flight next week and wonder what will happen at security.

My local teaching hospital where I work  sometimes take  samples of left over bone to culture cells for research and for bone grafts.  You would have to consent to this of course but at least your left overs are doing some use.

Good luck for Tuesday and try not to stress too much.  You seem like you are very well prepared.

    Wishing you all the best.

    Best wishes

Lallydye - I too was asked if I wanted to donate my old hip bone, Yes I said no use to me any more is it, and if it is of use to someone else you are welcome to it.

My hospital is also a teaching and research mainly heart hospital, but with a small general section.

My specialaist apparently is researching how to re-build bone in the lab, and is apparently having some success or so I'm told by a friend who works in the heart section of the hospital.

Wouldn't it be great if they can re-grow our own bone in a lab, and then transplant that rather than something foreign.

Also wish to point out that no mistakes, in admittance area, before you go through to pre-surgery, a nurse weighs you, checks how tall you are, blood pressure, and then hands you a great big thick black marker, and says great big arrow on the leg that is being operated on please, and then write what the surgery is, I wrote HIP and arrow pointing up.

Hi Lyn,  I love the idea of me drawing an arrow on my left hip!! I will certainly donate my bone if asked. I have a daugher who is a cancer survivor. Through that time I learned the importance and contributing to medical research. I also must say I love the little bit that you wrote about what else the nurse will do.. it just feels better to hear from people who have done this before. Sending love and gratitude.

Hi Lallydye, Thank you so much for your response, especially about the part where I will soon forget all of this biggrin.  I will be interested to see how things go with the security on your flight. I am feeling much better from the wonderful support I get here. Much love - Cindy

For all that you have done for me and for each other, I couldn't love you more my fellow hippies. I wish we lived closed to each other wink

I agree that it's an odd and rather unsettling thought. I wondered if my hip would not feel part of me afterwards. But I needn't have worried - it simply feels normal with the added bonus of no pain. Good luck - I'm sure you won't look back.

      Annone, Cindy,

I like those two posts - thank you old hip for supporting me for 63 years, and welcome new pain-free hip (even if mine is slightly misplaced).
