Fentanyl and pregnancy

Holy crap I'm freaking pregnant and on fentanyl. Obviously I have to stop wearing the patches asap. I'm probably one of the youngest people in here l who is on this medication, but I'm needing ideas to get off quick and with minimal withdrawals as I'm high risk as it is. I shouldn't have even been able to get pregnant!!!!! I'd also love ideas on safe ways manage my chronic pain that is about to triple in severity in a few months. Thank you all. I'm freaking out right now.

Y'all are awesome.
Sorry it's been a while since I have been on any board. I meet my Specialist Friday (was supposed to last Friday but she was held up in a C-section that turned for the worst) then the other specialist next month. When the testing they are going to have to do, we will be able to find out the sex earlier. I'll post as soon as I get confirmation as well as any other updates. Kinda worried for the simple fact that they are making me come back in a week just to review the ultrasound. By the time I'm out of my first trimester I will have had 4 ultrasounds. Something else that isn't very comforting.... But that's just part of high risks pregnancies right? Lie and tell me yes. Please.

Paper work was started to put me on Lovenox. Hopefully I'll get that soon. Aside from knowing its a blood thinner and I have to inject myself with it, I'm kinda clueless about it, but I've been to sick to do research. Just sitting up in bed today wore me out. (not kidding. I would sit up, go to restroom and get back into bed and take 2-3 hour naps. Which I took 4 of today) hoping this was a one day event as I have to start packing done we are moving on Thursday. Fml. I'm not ready to move again, but I'm ready to be out of this hell hole.

I had a baby almost 8 months ago and was on 37 mcg patch. I was able to stay on it throughout my pregnancy. I discussed it with my ob and had a birthing plan wrote out. They said that the only issues I would have would be a possiblility in minor withdrawals in the baby and he would have to be in the nicu for a few days. He was there a week but only had to wean from the smallest dose of morphine they give them to wean them. He is a very healthy baby and has had no ill effects. I understand what you are feeling. Just thought I'd share my story with you. I also wanted to point out that I wasn't supposed to be able to get pregnant either. Not sure where you are from but there are people who are on this drug throughout their pregnancy

Thank you so much for sharing that with me. I cut my dose in half after weening for about a month. I'm on the 25mcg now. Monday I ended up in the ER because the withdrawals made me start having contractions. I'm so glad to hear you have a healthy baby after all that. The idea that my baby could suffer after birth because of me not being able to get off this horrible medication has literally made me sick. I am in so much pain its unreal. I wasn't even in this much pain after breaking my back. I'm 9 weeks today and it seems like this pregnancy is crawling by..... I can't say anything because we haven't announced the pregnancy yet.... Will announce next month if things go well. I still feel horrible because even though my husband knows I'm trying, I can't help but feel as if I am not doing enough. He keeps asking me what needs to be expected with me remaining on this pain medication like possible birth defects, baby withdrawals and everything else that could go wrong. I feel like I'm letting him down because of this. Again, thank you for sharing your story with me. My drs haven't had anyone on this medication before so they are trying to figure this out with me, excepti haven't even been able to actually talk to them in person as every time I have an appointment. I've seen 3 different drs so far, none of which are my actual drs.

Hang in there it is tough. It's not a common med that they see but I was so glad that they had no hesitations to keep me on it. As far as withdrawals with the baby in my case were very small and the docs were great. They talked everything through with me and pointed out even some of the drugs they give babies in the nicu need to be weaned off. I had a miscarriage (which was a shock that I was pregnant to begin with)a year before I found out I was pregnant for my last baby and I am convinced it was due to weaning off the patch since I wanted to try to go off it for the babies sake. The next time I decided to go with the doctors advice and stayed on it. Good luck to you and hope things turn out great. Pregnancy is stressful enough without the added back pain and medication complications.

Jane,
Im so glad your hospital was supportive with weening your baby. Where I live you have to worry that Child & Family services will take your baby if its born addicted to anything.

Yes I live in Michigan and am very worried about cps being involved when I was at the methadone clinic I talked to some girls that had babies and cps is automatically involved with anybody on methadone so the girl told me that they just came to her while she was in the hospital and asked her a few questions and it wasn't a problem they are more concerned about women that are not in recovery as long as you don't have drugs in your system when you deliver and you go to meetings and have some kind of plan your fine but I do think that they ask the doctors and the clinic if you failed any of your drug screens I am very concerned about my case and don't want cps involved what so ever I plan on just keeping the baby with me I won't let the nurses take the baby to the nursery etc but hopefully nothing happens

I am also on fetanyl and I have been on it throughout my entire pregnancy I am seventeen weeks pregnant and so far the doctors say everything is okay I am worried about the baby having withdrawals and I could never forgive myself if something bad happened I have tried to quit cold turkey and it was completely miserable and that was during my first trimester I was on methadone but the smallest possible dose and then I stopped methadone on hopes that the fetanyl would be completely out of my system but then I was suffering methadone withdrawals and believe it or not hey weren't as bad as fetanyl but now I am seventeen weeks pregnant and I have heard that it's the best time to wean down or taper down during the second trimester I want to stop but believe it will harm the baby I don't know whether or not to get back on the methadone or if I should just try my best to wean down I honestly believe that he methadone is no better hen fetanyl they are both synthetic and I honestly think it could be worse but not many moms have went through this am 26 years old and this is my second pregnancy I didn't even smoke during my first one and am so scared but so far everything is okay he baby is growing and looks great in all the ultrasounds I find out he sex next week good luck

I meet with my Specialist this week so I'm looking forward to hearing what he has to say about it. My pcm told me to go back to to my original dose because being in pain is worse for the baby than taking the medicine. I also know once I have the baby the fentanyl does not pass through breastmilk so it will be safe to continue. Please keep me updated on your pregnancy. I have had mixed reviews so far, but my ob doesn't have patients with chronic pain but that's why she is sending me to the specialist. (along with my genetic mutations and my risk for blood clots) my pcm has been wonderful and did a bunch of research for me -i still continue to do my own as well-known but he has made me feel better about this situation. Good luck. What do you think you're having? Any preference?

I Find out if it's a boy or a girl on my birthday which is August 23rd and it's going to be the best birthday present I can't wait my boyfriend and I both want a baby boy I have a daughter and she is eight years old so as long as the baby is healthy I'll be happy and I am thinking about getting on a low dose of su ozone and hopefully weaning myself off by my due date which is n Janurary I just don't want the baby to have to go through any withdrawals because I have tried to stop fentanyl and it was so hard I wold never ever want y baby to have to suffer like that olé fully both of our baby's are healthy and I hope that the fetanyl won't be too much for them I mean it can't be an worst then methadone and definitely don't want to be back on that stuff because I have heard of girls being on a low dose and still a I g their baby's go through withdrawal I guess everyone is different it just sucks knowing that what we're doing could harm our babies f we stop and if we continue I don't know what to do Ecuador I don't have a script and I don't want to a e cops involved but will keep you posted thank you and good luck to you too

I've talked to several people who have been on fentanyl or pain meds throughout their pregnancys (babycenter) and the majority of the babies were born with no effect of the meds, only a small few have had their newborns go to ICU for withdrawals and even then it was for less than a week. That gives me hope. But I will let you know what the Dr says. Good luck, I hope you both get your boy. My son is wonderful. The only reason I want a girl is because my husband wants a boy.
