Fever post op

Good evening,

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced fever's after surgery.  i am three days post op direct anterior.  Seems like once a day my temp spikes up.  I am sure it's not uncommon.  Just wondering how long before this part goes away.

Hi, There's a recent post on here about the same thing. With me it lasted a week or so, in the night. It's just your body recovering from the surgery, presuming your otherwise well and your wound is healing with no signs of infection.

    Hi Tony

I had the same thing after trhr on the Tuesday and was getting

home on the Friday but my temp kept spiking but I got home on the

Monday as they must have 24 hours without your temp spiking incase

it's a gathering of blood at the hip even though an ultrasound showed

everything there was OK but they have to keep us safe and be sure

    everything is fine

I was feeling OK and did not feel unwell just hot but I joked with the

doctor and said it was because I had a blood transfusion during surgery

as I had lost 2 ltres of blood and my body was reacting to the strange

blood but at the end of the day you have had major surgery and the body will react to this happening to it but I got over it and have made a great

recovery nearly 9 weeks post op now and No pain just slight discomfort

at my back but that is because I now walk straight which I have not done for 2 years as I walked bent over 2 sticks

but it has been worth the discomfort you feel after the op to be pain free

I now include back exercises along with my hip ones and I also walk with a book on my head to keep my back staight and it is helping lol

If I could just knock this sleeping in to touch I would be over the moon as

I am still not sleeping great but I have had this since I got the severe pain and had to slow down so I think it's a mixture of always being so busy

and now not doing too much but I am confident that when the spring

comes and the air is clearer and we can get out in it a lot more especially as the spring is my favourite time of year when everything is coming to

life again after the winter just like us the new HIPPY'S will be all on the

go and enjoying our freedom again

I wish you a speedy recovery and a quick return home as that is when you get plenty rest and home comforts you cannot beat the return home

    Take care

After a blood transfusion they would be very careful of a raised temperature. It can indicate a transfusion reaction. They often send us in the micro lab blood cultures from the patient as well as the transfusion bag to culture. A blood culture is not considered negative until after 5 days incubation with no growth

If there is a reaction to a blood transfusion it happens very quickly, within a short time of commencing the transfusion. Even then it's normal for the temperature to go up a little.

A bad cross match reaction is almost instantaneous, but blood cultures are done just to rule out any slow growing infections

      Hi Helen,

I live in Ft Myers Florida and had direct anterior hip replacement this past wednesday and was discharged the same day.  This forum seems mainly focused on the posteroir method since its origin is the UK.

This procedure does not cut through any muscles to access the joint and is supposed to be less invasive.

Having said that they send you home the same day so your not sure what to expect.  My second day I had to return for a spinal blood batch because I was having such bad headaches.

Got paseed this when th fevers started.  Seems like once a day they come.  I take my Tylenol and do my breathing exercies.

Wish I was aware of this before I left the hospital.  This forum has been so valuable becasue I get so much information from people who are going through the same process as myself.

Thanks for sharing you experiences. I appreciated the insight.

      Wish you a speedy recovery!

      Best Wishes,

      Tony

Sorry, yes Maggie blood cultures are only taken if there's a suspicion of infection. Just meant the spike in temp that continues following THR wouldn't be due to a blood transfusion.

    Good morning Tony,

    How are you doing ?

How is your neck and shoulder pain?  Are you still in the hospital?

I remember how they took my temp 3-4 times a day and it spiked to

    39 C around noon until day 3 -

    Feel better

      Hi Renee,

Doing better struggling with the fever.  Had my blood patch epidural the other day which elminated the headache.  Seems like multiple symtoms to deal with.  It's only day 4 and I feel and am getting stronger each day.  If I could get rid of the fever I think I would be much better off with the hip recovery.  Hope all is well with you.

Fever will pass - it just takes time for your systems to settle down.

      hi tony,

Great to hear that --- there are so many things they don't tell you, bless their hearts - so we are here together and deal with one issue at a time -

Even though you had the anerior approach, they still had to fit the hardware in to the hip joint and femur ....

Just make sure that you don't have an infection somewhere okay?  like a tooth or cat scratch or something - if so, go to your doctor a.s.a.p and get anti-biotics -

      have a wonderful day

      big warm hug

Yes, I had this, Tony . They didn't let me out of hospital for 5 days post op as my temperature kept spiking. But then it stabilised and all was well - no problems after.

They didn't tell me about this either so I have beed dealing with it as it comes up.  Hopefully this will subside soon and I can concentrate on getting my hip recovered.  thanks for the reply hope all is well.

My consultant said the hot fever is the immune system's response to the surgery. Keep an eye in it and your wound, double heck with a doctor if it continues.
