I am 41 and have fibroids. each time I'm asked if I'm pregnant due to my bloated belly. I have made diet changes but the stomach is still there. The Dr recommends surgery and I want to avoid having a hysterectomy. please help what other options are there in Canada for large fibroids

    Hi June,

Long story short, you have options. If you plan on having kids or more kids, then you may want a myomectomy. Personally, I had a uterine fibroid embolization, which was done by a radiologist. This has been such a life changer for me. I am not in Canada, however, I am thinking these are available to you. There are a couple of other options depending on size of the fibroid, but these are most common from what I gather. I will say I had 4 fibroids sizes 2 cm to 13 cm, and they have shrunk plus periods are significantly lighter.

I am on vacation at the moment or I would elaborate. LOL

Good luck with the decision. My choice worked for me.

Hi Cindy, How did you shrink your fibroids?

Cindy6712, thank you for your response.

the embolization was after having children or before?

Me , i am taking fibristal until having babies ( suggested by may gynecologist) , but it's so hard. i have 3 fibroids( 4, 3 and 2 cm), no shrinking, no augmentation , but I always I have back pain.

Mine was done after having kids. I'm now nearing menopause, and although I was told the fibroids could or most likely would shrink during or after menopause, I was not waiting another year to 6 years to do anything. I was suffering from iron deficiency, had tiredness, and a few other problems.

      good luck

Thanks for responding Cindy. Did you have a smooth recovery process or you went thru turmoil like most of us after the UFE?

i had a myomectomy in july this year in australia. It was a major surgery but i am so happy it was not a hysterectomy. not all doctors can do it or even tell you it is an option, shop around & find a doctor who can. i too was bloated & looked pregnant. i had 19 fibroids removed several up to 10cm in size

Hi, do you know where the fibroids that were removed were located? Were they all over your uterus and did they affect your back and legs, any sciatic pain?

i know that my larger ones were subserosal & intramural subserosal as those were measured on internal scan. My surgeon said after operation that they were scattered all over uterus so i suspect i had all types. I had to go back & have submucosal one removed from inside the cavity that did not show on scan. scan was difficult due to the many fibroids & a clear picture was not possible.

i did not have leg or back pain just horrendous bleeding that did not stop. i also had pressure on my bladder due to size of uterus

    Options:

    • UFE (uterine fibroid embolisation)
    • myectomy (surgery)
    • MRI guided ultrasound
    • radio frequency (sometimes called Sonata)

Check all these on internet. Ask your doctor to refer you to the right hospital where they do them or failing that, find it on internet. I'm in the UK, don't really know Canada. Good luck. Nobody gave me these options when I was first diagnosed and the fibroids were small enough. Now it's too late, too many fibroids and my dominant fibroid is too big for everything but embolisation (10cm), so that's what I am having.

    Hi June50526

I'm in Canada and experienced the same in 2017. I was 36 years old at the time. So for starters just want you go know your not alone and this is very common. I would recommend going to a specialist first to see what options are best based on your fibroid placement in the uterus and size. I tried to avoid surgery but ended up praying on it and had it done as i desire to have more kids. Had 16 removed via myomectomy and it went well. Had submucosal and inter something cant remember the name but i had them all. Recovery was pretty good as well. Though i went that route, like the ladies mentioned, there are several options that you can choose to avoid surgery. You could even try a naturopath DR for a bit as well to see if they can help you shrink them naturally. I did that for a bit before surgery as well. I wish you all the best through this journey.
