Fibroids OB/GYN wants permission to remove everything!

Posted , 13 users are following.

I was told I need a hysterectomy for a fibroid. I started off OK with hysterectomy, but the more I read about it, I decided to go with a myomectomy. Did a second visit to OB/GYN about it and doc wanted to make paperwork for surgery even more (with possibility of Fallopian tubes and ovaries removed) and this is making me want to run to a new doctor. I just want the fibroid removed. Doc really seems to prefer hysterectomy. The ultrasound said one 14x15 cm (5 mo. pregnancy size) fibroid.

Should I run to a new doc, or try to get the doctor to make the paperwork say 'myomectomy' on the paperwork? What I mean is should I trust this doc to stick to myomectomy since doc says they will do what I ask but keeps trying to get me to agree to more? Starting over seems overwhelming but I don't want to have a surgery I don't want.

I just wanted to update you ladies. I started looking into UFE. I found that there are several things I can use to block off the artery and it is looking more appealing to me even than myomectomy (which I was dead set on). I found a new hospital and I am in the process of getting a new doctor.I still have to check out the insurances but at least I am starting to find people that will give me options to hysterectomy.

My take on this: GET A SECOND OPINION, especially if you want to have children (or more children if you've already had).

I had at least 23 fibroids (I think the doctor stopped counting after a while), which were pretty much taking over my abdomen. Most of them were extremely large and in a huge mass in the front. My uterus was so much larger than it should've been and my poor bladder was getting squished as a result. I was officially deemed one of the worst fibroid cases that my OBGYN had seen.

I went into the hospital for a myomectomy, though I was fully prepared (just in case) to allow the doctor to remove my uterus if saving it wasn't an option (though I would've been devastated). Fortunately, my surgeon was WONDERFUL. It was a complicated, lengthy surgery but he saved my uterus and I fear that if my doctor wasn't so great and experienced, that a lesser surgron would've given up and removed it.

It's all about finding the right doctor. I do not believe that a hysterectomy should be your only option and if your doctor is telling you that, then it's best that you tell this one to take a hike.

I would get a second opinion before moving forward with what this doctor is recommending.

Hello all, just updating. I went to see Dr. number three. She suggested UFE.

I am going to see the radiologist as soon as possible I will post again to see what the doctor says.

She also said that she absolutely did not want to do a myomectomy because she was concerned about scar tissue wrapping around other organs. She thought that I would be disappointed with the results of a myomectomy. Even the first two doctors didn’t say that. my belly is the size of a six month pregnancy.

My major concerns are the size of my fibroid and the material they use when doing a procedure, since it will have to be in my body permanently. I’ll be asking the radiologist about that what I see when I go to my next appointment.

Any comments especially anything anyone could suggest me asking the radiologist would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I finally saw a radiologist for UFE. He said he uses polyvinyl alcohol and metal coils to stop the blood supply to the uterus. I was wondering if anybody had any trouble with the metal coils after UFE?

I would definitely get a second opinion. If the fibroid can be removed without your uterus having to be removed, then I wouldn't stick with a pushy surgeon who wants to take out everything. I had 23 fibroids (many of them quite large) and my doctor still managed to save my uterus. I have a feeling yours can be saved as well.

I was wondering if you're still using the progesterone cream?
