Your guide to healthy eating whilst taking Orlistat
(Xenical)
This dietary advice sheet gives some general information to help you make the recommended
changes to your diet. If you need more detailed advice or if you are following a special diet that
makes it difficult to make these changes, please ask your doctor to refer you to a registered dietitian.
Fat
It is recommended that you reduce your fat
intake to 30% of your total calorie intake whilst
taking Xenical. Reported side effects of eating
too much fat include: flatulence, oily spotting
on underwear, and increased urgency of loose
bowel movements.
Tips on how to reduce your fat intake:
• Change from butter to a polyunsaturated or
monounsaturated low fat spread such as
Flora light, Gold low fat, Olive light spread.
• Choose lean cuts of meat and trim visible
fat.
• Avoid the skin from chicken and the
crackling from pork.
• Avoid using fat when cooking – grill,
poach, bake or microwave instead.
• Choose low fat dairy foods such as semiskimmed
or skimmed milk, low calorie
yogurts, reduced fat cheeses and low fat
spreads.
• Choose healthy option cook-in sauces with
less than 5g fat per 100g sauce.
Fibre, Fruit and Vegetables
Fibre is needed in the diet to help maintain a healthy
digestive system. It can also help to reduce raised
cholesterol levels.
To increase your fibre intake:
• Choose high fibre breakfast cereals such as
Weetabix, Shreddies or Branflakes.
• Choose wholemeal bread, wholewheat pasta and
rice
• Include pulses, peas, beans and lentils
Aim to have five portions of fruit and vegetables each
day, fresh, frozen or tinned. They are both low in
calories and provide essential nutrients to promote
healthy skin, immune function and general well being.
One portion is:
• 1 medium fruit, such as apple, small banana, pear
• 2 small fruits, such as 2 plums, 2 apricots, 2 kiwis
• 3 tablespoons cooked fruit or vegetables
• a small mixed salad
• a handful of dried fruit.
Why ‘weight’ for a healthier lifestyle?
If you are overweight you are at greater risk
of developing health problems such as: type
2 diabetes, raised cholesterol, raised blood
pressure, coronary heart disease,
osteoarthritis, obesity-related cancers and
joint pain.
Making small but positive changes to your
diet and lifestyle can help you to lose weight
and reduce the risk of developing these
health problems.
Why take Xenical and how does it work?
If you eat more calories than you need, your body
stores the extra, resulting in weight gain. One way to
aid weight loss is to reduce the amount of fat in your
diet.
Xenical works in your digestive system by preventing
about one third of dietary fat from being digested and
absorbed. It does this by attaching itself to enzymes
called lipases (found in your gut) that breakdown
dietary fat – meaning any undigested fat cannot be
absorbed and is passed in your stools.

When having occasional biscuits as treats choose plain biscuits such as Rich tea, Digestive
or Malted Milk.
Sugar
Sugar provides ‘empty calories’. 1 teaspoon provides approximately 20 calories. Aim to reduce the
amount of sugar in your diet as much as possible. Try to:
• Have hot drinks without sugar or with a sweetener.
• Choose ‘no added sugar’ squashes, diet, slimline fizzy drinks and desserts, such as sugar free jelly
• Choose tinned fruit in natural juice rather than in syrup.
Snacks
You can have snacks between meals if you choose healthily. Remember to
stock up on healthy items to prevent you being tempted by other things.
Try the following:
• bowl of chopped vegetables such as carrots, celery and peppers or fresh fruit
• crispbreads, water biscuits and popcorn
• low calorie yoghurt
If you are tempted by chocolate try:
• low calorie chocolate mousse, low calorie hot chocolate drink
• Funsize bars and low calorie bars such as Flyte, Lo-Go
If you are tempted by more savoury snacks try:
• baked crisps, Skips, Twiglets and Quavers
Some extra handy tips
• Try to eat three regular meals each day.
• Try to eat starchy carbohydrate such as bread, potato, rice and pasta at each meal.
These are low in fat and will help to make you feel full.
• Relax for a few minutes before a meal and eat slowly.
• If you need to eat smaller portions, then try using a smaller plate.
• Try not to buy tempting foods – if it’s not in the cupboard, you can’t eat it!
• Stay motivated. It is easier to achieve results if you have a clear goal of weight loss or a clothing size
to work towards.
• Don’t give up. Your weight loss may stop and start but keep going and the outcome will be worth it!

Today is my first day on Orlistat, just back from my GP with a months prescription to begin with. I have gained a few tips from you all jsut by reading this thred!
I have my fitness pal on my iphone and i am following the rule of 'no more than 5g fat per 100g serving, and no more than 15g fat per meal'. i am going for 1300 cals a day. I am currently 17st 12 and I am 5ft5, so I have a lot to loose! I should be about 10st10 MAX for my height. I am lucky I have a good doctor who is sympathetic to my needs, fimr but fair I would say.
I read this all before planning my food for today, which is
B- 40g bran flakes, 150ml skim milk, 150g 0% fat organic vanilla yogurt and 100g blueberries. Total cals: 382 cals, total fat:1.3g
Lunch - homemade french onion soup (recipe from Scottish Slimmers) and a small pack of sushi. Total cals:212 fat:3.5
Dinner: chicken breast, salad with beetroot. cider vinegar and mustard dressing dressing. Total cals: 386, fat:5g fat
snacks: Tropicana 50, (50% less cals and sugar) 69cals, 0g fat., apple (50 cals, 0g fat)
Total cals: 1099. fat: 9.8
Does this sound ok? So far I have had my breakfast adn a sip of OJ, gonna be drinking lots of water though as I hear headaches are a side effect. I had my first Pill at about 11.30 so far so good.
Thanks,
Kimmy

I have a packet of refreshers or a curly wurley after weigh in as both low and that's my treat if I've done well.
I'm not missing much either, not living on salad just making sure its low fat.
When you pounds start dropping off you will really feel motivated.
Good luck
