First stage of two tomorrow

Posted , 18 users are following.

Well after several months of waiting I am finally going to have my first stage tomorrow. So by this time tomorrow I'll have no hip joint but will at last be stuffed full of antibiotics.

10 days in hospital will give me lots of time to visit the forum?

      Renew,

You are a sweetie. I'm doing ok. It's a bit sore and feels very odd, but I walked up and down the corridor today, partial weighbearing, and the hospital, staff and fellow patients are all excellent (well apart from the odd person who is confused and rambles on all night)

      Let's hope my progress continues.

Just about to go for a walk myself accompanied by my granddaughter. I think she is hoping I make it as far as the local shop so she can have some chocolate lol

      Enjoy your walk

    An update.

Its now day 5. The surgery went well. Catheter and drain out. I can. as from today, get in and out of bed by myself and walk with zimmer or crutches (zimmer easier but I'll need to use crutches at home)

Theyve cultured the bacteria and adjusted my antibiotics which I get through a canula. They measure the antibiotic levels in my blood as they have a target level which I suppose I have to get to before I can go home.

The sensation of moving the leg is weird: you can hear (and I can feel) the spacer clicking against the bone, but that doesn't hurt much. I do get the odd serious twinge if I put too much weight on it while getting up or down but I've more or less giver up any opiate meds so am just on paracetemol.

So far, I would say, things are going well. In my experience it doesn't always stay that way. It will get harder at home with stairs and carpets etc

Meanwhile my dear wife has the builders in replacing the bathroom I usually use but I'm hoping it should be less chaotic when i get home in about a weeks time.

Sounds like you will be ready to go home soon. Take your meds on time important for exercise walking and sleep.

Ask for opiates prescription to take home. Opiates do control the pain much better the first two weeks home and you will feel better. Take one day at a time. Walking every day to keep the blood and oxygen flow to aide healing.

Good luck hope all goes well getting home and all precautions sound like you have it all worked out. Good to hear someone will be home to care for you the first few weeks.

Peace and Healing sent your way.

    Hi Michael,

Hope all is going well with your recovery. You are an inspiration with your positive attitude

I've been off the forum for a few weeks as my mom had two more falls and is now in rehab.

      Hi Kristen

Thanks for your kind words. I think I'm just lucky that I seem to recover quite quickly and don't have much pain.

I'm 3 weeks post surgery now and getting about well on crutches. The spacer does make horrible grinding noises though!

It is a bit frustrating looking at the weeds growing in the garden but I have someone coming tomorrow to mow the grass and he may do some tidying.

Nearly half way through the first stage and the sun is shining

      Hi Michael,

I'm 10 days post-op and just grinned when you mentioned the garden.  My yard, while I mowed just before surgery is overgrown already.  I'm hoping the neighbor will take pity and give it a quick trim with his rider.

What is a "spacer" - I seem to have missed something.

       Hi Kebra

The spacer is what they put in where the hiop joint was. It's a metal rod covered in bone cement in which they mixed antiobiotics. It's put into the femur and rests in my pelvis. It stops the muscles and tendons from shrinking but does allow me to put some weight on my leg so I'm partial weight bearing - much easier.

I hope this chap, who gardens for one of my neighbors, will keep things from getting completely out of hand. I've about an acre in total with several fairly large flower beds so there is usually lots to do.
